A Snippet from RESCUE ME #sweetromance #MFRWhooks

Hello! Welcome to my blog. Today I've got a snippet from my sweet romance RESCUE ME. In this scene, Matt Malone has recently moved into the apartment across the hall from Chelsea Andrews in a century old Victorian mansion in Toronto. When he brings home food from the restaurant where he works, he invites Chelsea to share it with him, but since she doesn't know him very well, she's not ready to spend time alone with him in his apartment. So he proposes a picnic on the floor of the hallway between their two apartments:

“You mean, you want me to come over for dinner? In your apartment?”

Matt felt her reluctance, as well as an undercurrent of fear. She still didn’t trust him, and he couldn’t say he blamed her, considering the way they’d met. “Unless you want to meet out in the hall. I could bring my picnic basket.”

She blinked at him. Then she grinned, her smile transforming her face. The cool, solemn-faced young woman was replaced by a vivacious, charming girl. Matt nearly dropped his bags in surprise.

“Actually, a picnic in the hallway sounds like fun. At least we won’t have to worry about ants.”

It was Matt’s turn to blink. The Ice Princess had a sense of humor. There was a real human being under all that frost.

“Okay, a picnic it is. I’ll heat up the food and get some dishes.”

He opened the door to his apartment and went inside.

Chelsea peeked through the door, her eyebrows raised. “Maid’s year off?”

Matt followed her gaze over half emptied moving boxes, a sink piled high with dirty dishes, and a basket of dirty laundry by the door. Some days, he regretted being a slob.

“So, it’s a bit of a mess. Give me a break. I only moved in a week ago.”

“I know. I can’t believe you’ve made this much mess in only a week.”

“It’s a gift.”

Matt pushed aside dirty dishes on the counter to set down his bags of food. He rummaged through the cupboards for the few remaining clean dishes.

“Can I help? Do you need anything peeled or washed? Or fumigated?”

Matt turned sharply to look at her. Chelsea shrugged out of her coat, folded it neatly and placed it on the floor of the hallway. Not so much as the toe of her shoe stepped over the threshold of Matt’s apartment. A smart-ass reply was ready on his lips. But then he saw the sparkle of humor in her eyes and the laughter trembling on her lip. Chelsea the cool Ice Princess might have intrigued him, but this Chelsea, with the laughing eyes and the snappy come backs, was someone he could really like.

“Don’t just stand there, make yourself useful. Here,” he said, walking over to her and depositing mismatched plates and cups in her hands. “Set the table, or the floor as the case may be.”

Matt warmed the leftovers in the microwave and brought everything to the hallway, Styrofoam containers and all. Chelsea had retrieved a blanket from her place and spread it on the floor of the hallway between the two open doors of their apartments. A vase of silk flowers sat in the middle of the blanket, giving their picnic an elegant air. Her satisfied smile nearly knocked him on his butt.

Though all the evidence points to Matt, Chelsea doesn’t want to believe the funny, sincere man she’s falling in love with could be the culprit.

Matt is at a crossroads. He’s given up a lot for his acting career and it’s given him little in return. Should he continue? When he moves in across the hall from Chelsea, he begins to believe he could have it all, love and career. But those hopes are dashed when he discovers what she believes he’s capable of.

Chelsea must decide whether Matt is the man of her dreams or her worst nightmare. And Matt has to decide what, and who, is truly important to him.

Excerpt:

Megan tugged on Matt’s hand. “Come on, Matt, you promised you’d sing for me. My favorite. Remember?”

Chelsea turned to stare at Matt, surprised. He could sing? The man was full of surprises.

Matt kissed Megan’s cheek with obvious affection. “How can you say no to a pregnant woman?”

Chelsea watched as he hopped up onto the stage and spoke to his father and the other musicians. A moment later he picked up the microphone.

“My sister asked me to sing and said if I didn’t, she’d give birth right here on the dance floor. I don’t know about you, but I really don’t want to see that.” When everyone quit laughing, he continued. “This is one of my favorite songs, and even though Robbie Burns wasn’t Irish, I’m going to sing it anyway.”

Matt’s father played the introduction to the song, the sound of his fiddle so sweet it would make the angels weep. And then Matt sang.

“My love is like a red, red rose,

That’s newly sprung in June:

My love is like the melodie

That’s sweetly played in tune.”

Chelsea sat transfixed, barely breathing. Matt’s rich tenor swept over her, embracing and enveloping her with its warmth. The words struck a chord somewhere deep in her soul.

#NewRelease from Peggy Jaeger-CHRISTMAS AND CANNOLIS

This holiday season Peggy Jaeger has not one, not two but three new releases. Peggy joined me in November to talk about a secondary character in HOPE'S DREAM. Today she's sharing her favorite scene from CHRISTMAS AND CANNOLIS, which releases December 12, 2018. I love this scene and I'm immediately rooting for Regina. You go, girl!

Ten pair of eyes glared at me from all corners of the table. Some were wide-eyed; some were narrowed. All of them were filled with varying levels of emotions ranging from shocked ( Ma) to suspicious (my brothers) to pleased (my sisters-in-law).

“Regina.” Ma threw her napkin on her plate and slammed her cutlery next to her plate. “What is your father talking about? What man spent the night at your apartment?”

“It’s not like it sounds, Ma. It was late and we were talking, and then we both just fell asleep—”

“Holy Madonna.” She made the sign of the cross and closed her eyes, hands clasped together as her lips moved silently in prayer.

“Where?” ’Carlo asked.

“Where what?”

“Where did the two of you fall asleep? In your bed?”

Another finger cross from Ma. This time she kissed her fingertips afterward and threw a prayer up to the Lord.

“I don’t think you get to ask me that question, ’Carlo. I’m thirty-two years old, and you’re my brother, not my father.”

“What I am is suspicious,” he spat back. “How come we didn’t know you were seeing a guy? Why you keeping him a secret?”

“First of all, what I do in the privacy of my own home”—now Ma was rocking back and forth as she prayed—“or don’t do, is none of your business. Second, I’m not seeing anyone, so the fact that it’s a secret is null and void. Stop with the third degree, GianCarlo. Use it on your own kids, ’cause like I said, you’re not my father.”

“But I am,” Pop said, his tone hard and filled with anger, “so answer it. Where did Irish sleep last night?”

“Irish?” Petey exclaimed. “What the Hell kinda name is that?”

“Language, Pietro,” Ma said, awaking from her spiritual coma to chastise her son.

There are so many things I simply adore about my family. The unshakeable connection and love we all have; the fact that we live close to one another; our shared faith and sense of tradition. But the one thing I do hate is the antiquated morality system they adhere to. Girls don’t have sex with men before marriage, plain and simple. Of course since the one and only time I’d done just that, I’d wound up pregnant and forced to get married, my parents’ concerns made sense.

To them.

I was almost fifteen years older, much wiser, and a full-fledged adult now, but I was still treated like an ignorant bambina who had to be protected from wolves and scoundrels. If my father had his way, I’d be married right now to one of his goombahs, eight months pregnant with probably our seventh child, and in the kitchen making gravy.

So many times over the years, I’d wanted to smack him on the back of the head much the way he smacks us, and say, “Wake up! It’s twenty-first-century America, not eighteenth-century Sicily.”
Wanting to do something and actually doing it, though, are very different beasts.

So.

I don’t get mad often, especially with my family, but I was tired, overworked, emotionally drained, and royally pissed off right now, so the anger bled through my usual calm.

I rose from my chair and threw my napkin down on the table like my mother had. “You know what? I’m done. I’m done with you all treating me like a child. I’m not one of your underlings, Pop, who needs to be kept on a short lease and told what to do every minute of the day because you don’t have enough trust to let them act on their own. And”—I glared at my brothers— “I’m not five years old and unable to defend myself against bullies and bad guys. You don’t have to hold my hand so I can cross the street and not get hit by a car.” I grabbed my plate and walked to the kitchen. “I’m done with you all thinking I can’t make a wise and appropriate decision with my life,” I added over my shoulder. I placed the dish in the sink and called out, “I’m done with the checking up on me, the second- guessing me, and the way you all think you have a right to manage my life.”

I yanked my coat off the hall tree and yelled, “I’m a thirty-two-year-old grown-ass woman who owns and manages her own business and her own life. I don’t need protectors, handlers, or any of you telling me what to do, who to see, or how to conduct myself. I’ve been on my own a long time, and I think I’ve done a great job with myself, even if you all don’t.” I shrugged into my coat and wound my scarf around my neck. “If I want a man to spend the night or not, it’s none of your damn business. Deal with it.”

I may have screeched that last part.

I slammed the door behind me and sprinted down the stairs of the brownstone, my ungloved hand waving in the air for a passing cab.

As an exit line, I think it was a pretty good one.

Review: Ann Everett's TRUE

I'm finally making good on my promise to review Ann Everett's contemporary romance TRUE. Ann visited Journeys with Jana back in July: you can read an excerpt and our interview here

My Review:

I received a copy of TRUE from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ann Everett’s contemporary romance TRUE. The characters were likable (except for the bad guy) and I really wanted all of them to get their happy endings. That’s endings—plural, because three couples fall in love in this book! And there are many laugh out loud moments that will keep you reading.

What I especially loved about this book is that Ms. Everett takes well-used romance tropes and manages to make them fresh. The girl with amnesia plot could have been tedious but instead it was funny and almost believable. I loved that just before her accident, True vows to become a different person, and when she comes out of the coma that’s exactly what she does. Instead of being the shy, conservative-dressing doormat she was previously, the new, assertive True goes after what she wants. And she decides she wants Ritter. I like that in a romance heroine!

The small-town hero trope is also well-used. Here it is played for laughs – Ritter is a reluctant hero who keeps saving people’s lives, including True’s. But there’s a more serious side to Ritter that makes him want to look after everyone – his mother, his sisters, and especially True. And that makes him a very appealing character.

One of the romance tropes that I think Ms. Everett handled particularly well was the love at first sight trope. From the moment Ritter’s sister Swan sees True’s brother Teague, they were in love. And I believed it! It was probably the best love at first sight scene I’ve ever read. I’m hoping Swan and Teague get their own book!

All the characters face obstacles on their way to true love (no pun intended), and the sexual tension is off the charts in this book. By the time they actually “do it”, all the reader can do is sigh in relief.

All in all, TRUE is a fun read. And it should probably get an award for best character names in a romance novel!

Favorite Scene with Melinda Dozier

Melinda Dozier is here to share a favorite scene from her novella, TROUBLE WITH GOLD. With the winter Olympics just around the corner, here's a story set in that world. This 68 page contemporary romance novella sounds like a fun read. Please welcome Melinda Dozier!

TROUBLE WITH GOLD by Melinda Dozier

One of my favorite scenes from Trouble With Gold is when Nadia and Ty (aka Trouble) meet for the first time. Ty is a well-known troublemaker and prankster. Since he’s the Winter Olympics virgin on the US Snowboard team, his teammates play a fast one, convincing him to run around naked in only his boxers in the middle of the Switzerland Olympics Village. Freezing! His two best mates shackle him to a post where he has to find a way out. In comes a Swiss Olympics volunteer, Nadia, who’s all about business. These two have a lot of fun throughout the novella. Here’s a little glimpse of how it starts:

“Thank God you’re here,” a male’s voice groaned, in English.

Nadia looked across the path toward the stairs ahead of her and saw a very well built, tall man, light brown hair curled around his beanie, with a chiseled chest and tight thighs. Wait a minute. Why could she see his chest and thighs? It was zero degrees Celsius. Why would a man be standing in nothing but his underwear? Her mother always warned her about sickos.

She dug into her purse, searching for her mace – something she carried since her internship in New York last summer. It settled somewhere at the bottom. Great. When she finally needed it, she couldn’t find it.

“Do you mind?” He said, a little louder. “I could use some help.”

“I have mace.” She answered, still searching. “Stay where you are.”

“Not a problem.” He laughed, a deep laugh that sent tingly sensations from head to toe. God, sleep deprivation must be worse than she thought if she had these thoughts about a sicko.

She shook her head and finally held the mace up. The man remained in the same spot. He had a fabulous smile and a few wrinkles at the side of his eyes, from smiling or being out in the sun. He must be an athlete with that tight physique. “Who are you and what are you doing?”

Instead of answering, he let out a laugh all while his teeth chattered. An ache sat in her throat. Poor guy. If his blue lips and frosted hair was any indication, he was beyond cold.

“Are you okay?” She slowly approached the stairs, not sure what the handsome man would do. But, he looked like he was in trouble.

His eyes perused her from top to bottom and then he looked back into her face. “Better now.” He smirked.

Blurb:

US snowboarder and notorious prankster, Ty (Trouble) Madsen is only getting a taste of his own medicine when his Olympic teammates shackle him to a fence wearing nothing but his boxers.  Reception and protocol volunteer, Nadia Hoffman, gets up close and personal with the sexy snowboarder to rescue him, but she's not the kind of girl who lets her hormones get in her way.  A professional performance could help her land her dream job at Olympics Committee Headquarters, but her new assignment supervising the rambunctious US Snowboarding Team is making that difficult.  Can she see behind the snowman in the community center bathroom and into the warm heart of the man everyone calls Trouble?

Dee Gatrell's SWEET SUNSET

Dee Gatrell visits today with a fun interview that offers a peek into her life and her writing process. Her newest release, SWEET SUNSET, is a later-in-life romance between a psychologist and a woman with too much going on in her life. Please welcome Dee Gatrell!

Why did you choose this genre?

I like to read many genres, but I noticed over the years that I do not do well with he said/she said books. I always have more people in my stories. Probably because I have always been surrounded by aunt, uncles, cousins, and now my four children and 12 grandchildren.

Did you always want to be a writer?

Yes. As a child I wrote a lot of things, like fan letters to my favorite cowboys, letters to pen pals, family and friends. I loved getting mail. No email back then. In high school I wrote skits for the pep rallies. And in my senior year my English teacher loved the story I wrote with my weird sense of humor.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book you’d like to share?

Many, but I have to say one of my favorite scenes was when the three women took the mothers and Myrtle Sue’s Mother-in-law to lunch, it was fun to write. June was the mother of friends who we went to lunch with once. She was a Southern lady who said to me: My neighbor Wanda had me come to her jewelry party, all that cheap stuff. Why you know, those Yankees don’t stay up North. And I knew I wanted to use June in a book, even as a minor character. She passed away at 93 a few years ago. Also used something from my friend’s mother.  One of my daughter’s was in an abusive marriage. I had to change a lot of things, but did get to kill him off.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read SWEET SUNSET?

I want them to read about characters they like, I want them to be able to laugh, and I hope they enjoy the recipes I put into the book.

Do you have any words of advice to beginning writers?

Yes, never give up. Join writing groups, send your writing to friends who will love it even if it isn’t the best at the time. I wrote for newspapers and magazines for years, but was never able to sell a novel until I retired from working. But hey, I’m older than dirt, but finally did it!

How do you think your life experiences have prepared you for writing?

I have lived a long time, come from a large family with all sorts of personalities, lived in several states, Ohio, Indiana, Oklahoma and Florida. I learned something new each place I have lived. If you watch and listen to people, you can pick up ideas for your characters. Is she clumsy? (I am). Does he have flirty eyes? Is she shy? Does she have hobbies? Does she belly dance? Do they like to garden? Does she have a crazy aunt she adores? Stop and look around.  You can pick up many ideas.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

Yes, at the present time we have three dogs. Zeus is almost 13 years old, Icarus is 12 and Ellie, our rescue dog is 5 years old. Dogs give you unconditional love. It’s hard when they get old. You know they won’t be with you forever. They get sick just like we do and we need to be there for them. We had a cat once. He was adorable. One night when my husband was working (military) the cat kept jumping on me. Something it never did before. Seems he was warning me that the gas stove was putting out fumes. Thankfully, hubby came home from work and threw his cigarette down before walking into the house. We had two kids that had a bedroom near the kitchen. Hubby smelled it and went in and fixed the odor. Then a week later, a neighbor’s dog caught our cat and killed it.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

I’m retired from the college where I worked for many years as an educational advisor. Yes, I did get ideas listening to students. I also wrote for the confession magazines and various newspapers while working there.

What do you like best about your hero from SWEET SUNSET?

Zack is compassionate. In spite of Myrtle Sue’s crazy family, he loves all of them. He’s a psychologist, and as Myrtle Sue says, he could practice on all of them. (I could use him with my family too!)

What do you like best about your heroine from SWEET SUNSET?

Myrtle Sue has a lot to put up with, a dead husband who talks to her in her sleep, an unmarried pregnant daughter, another daughter who is in an abusive marriage, a son who doesn’t want to grow up and a mother-in-law with dementia who moved in with her. But in spite of it all, she loves them and helps however she can. She also learns to quit being an enabler.

I love the name Myrtle Sue. How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

Long ago, in the early stages of AOL, a bunch of published and unpublished writers started a crazy fictional place to live we called Happy Acres. My name there was Myrtle Sue. My friend, Martha Hicks, (AKA Gladys Luween), was my next-door neighbor. We are still friends and call one another by those names. As for the others in Sweet Sunset, my editor made me change a lot of names. She said I had too many that started with M and other letters. I was running out of names to call Zack, and finally said Zack, no other names with Z. Then I realized the dog’s name was Zeus. I figured folks would figure out the difference between the two. I say I didn’t use anyone I know, but my husband says I know who that really is. So perhaps I did have a few people I know, strictly accidental, right?

How can readers reach you or find you online?

I’m on Face Book. I have an author page https://www.facebook.com/Dee-Gatrell-Author-1835656376706280/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/deegat41

We all need to laugh at times. I hope I always give readers a chuckle.

You made me chuckle with this interview, Dee! Thanks for being here.

Blurb for SWEET SUNSET:

Myrtle Sue Henderson, widowed, didn’t count on her mother-in-law moving in with her when her husband passed over. But Myrtle Sue’s loopy in-law troubles aren’t her only family baggage—she’s ailed with three adult children who use her like she’s a pair of Depends. With a daughter and two grandchildren attempting to escape an abusive husband, a second unmarried daughter who is pregnant with twins, and a son who refuses to grow up, she’s at her wits end.

Myrtle Sue didn’t figure she’d ever meet another man she’d care for, until she went to church to get away from her troubles, only to find more when her mother-in-law causes chaos and hits an elderly man with her cane and helps herself to money out of the collection plate. That’s how she meets Zack. She figures once he meets her dysfunctional family, he’ll run as fast as he can—away from them.

Excerpt:

Sonja’s eyes widened, and she grinned.

I thanked God Adam was blind to Hazel’s faults. “Thank you, Adam. You have no idea how happy I am that you’ll be here for Hazel.” And I really meant what I said.

Hazel walked into the kitchen and glanced around. “Who’s here? Oh my goodness! It’s my son Harold. How are you, honey?” She bent over and kissed Adam’s cheek. “And why don’t you ever visit your mommy, you naughty boy?”

I rolled my eyes and waved toward Adam. “Hazel, Harold’s been dead for twenty years. This is Adam, Sonja’s friend from the hospital. Remember? He’s a nurse, and he stays with you while I work.” I should’ve added whatever we paid him was worth every penny. He really was good to her.

“Oh, yes, Adam, dear.” She frowned at me. “Why can’t you be kind like Adam, Myrtle Sue? You’ve always been so mean to me.”

Sonja grinned. “Hi, Nana. How are you?”

“I’m fine.” She took a seat and grabbed a muffin. “Who are you? Are you Violet’s daughter?”

Sonja narrowed her eyes at her grandmother. “Nana! I’m Sonja, your granddaughter. Myrtle Sue and Don’s daughter.”

“Of course.” She laughed and pointed at her head. “You know how it is when you get old. Someday your mother will be just like me.”

Shuddering, I mumbled, “God forbid.”

“I hope you made roast beef for Father,” Hazel said.

“Yes, of course, and I made garlic rolls,” I lied, and then whispered, “Sonja, want some garlic tied around your neck?”

“Mom!”

Hazel pointed at the stove. “Good. And remember, he likes carrots and noodles around his roast beef.”

Adam stood and smiled. “Well, I’ve got to go now. I’ll see you on Monday, Nana.”

“Okay, honey.” She reached into her pocket. “Here’s a dollar. Get yourself something to eat. You’re rather skinny, you know.”

“Thanks,” he said, kissing her cheek.

I walked him to the door.

He handed me the money. “I’ve tried giving her the money back, but she gets mad. You take it.”

I brushed away his hand. “No, Adam. You keep the money. Whatever you get, you deserve. You’re very good with Hazel. Good luck with your new friend.”

Five minutes after Adam left, my son, Terry, arrived.

Terry kissed my cheek. “What’s to eat, Ma?”

I hugged him. “Muffins.” Terry wasn’t pretty like Adam. Instead, he had a rugged look, more like a cowboy. He had those fabulous blue eyes but not the long lashes. His nose showed signs of his youthful fist fights, and his dimples added to his charm. I can’t tell you how many girls called the house for him in his teen years. And yet at the age of twenty-three, he still hadn’t found a special woman.

He grabbed a chair and sat. “Muffins? Don’t you have any real food?”

Author Bio:

Dee Gatrell grew up in OH. She and her cousins entertained themselves by making up stories, dressing up in costumes and charging the neighborhood kids a few cents to come watch their plays. Her writing changed over the years. After marrying her husband Larry, they moved around the country, first when he was in the Air Force, next his civilian jobs required moving, too.

They have four children. Being away from family and listening to the kids running rampant, she would write letters to her relatives. She had a lot of aunts, uncles, cousins and various friends. This is her way to relieve stress. They found her amusing. She wasn’t trying to be funny, she was trying to stay sane.

The first time they relocated to Florida, her husband suggested she might want to go to college. Was he kidding? All she knew about was diapers, children, cleaning, laundry and cooking. She picked up the phone and called the local community college. The person on the phone encouraged her to take a writing class. From there she just kept attending until she finally, ten years later, received her BA from the University of Florida. She wrote for various newspapers over the years, and also worked as an educational advisor for Seminole State College before retiring.

Dee’s first novel, Sweet Sunset, was released in December 2016. She refers to the book as her dysfunctional family novel. She is now working on two more novels, one is an inspirational romance, the other another woman’s fiction.

Dee lives in Florida with her husband, Larry, four grown children, and a slew of grandkids. You can contact her on FaceBook or email her at gatrelldee@gmail.com.

#AuthorInterview with Ann Everett

Please join me in welcoming Ann Everett to Journeys with Jana. I look forward to interviewing her and finding out more about her. Here's our interview:

If you could change something about one of your books that’s already released, what would it be?

That’s the beauty of self/indie publishing. You can change your book at any time. I just recently re-edited several of my books and added back matter teaser chapters to all of them. Since I now have out nine books, some part of a trilogy and some companion books, then it was important that I add those chapters.

Also, in the first book I published, I added a character just to make the mystery a bit harder to figure out. I also like that I can correct mistakes that were overlooked by my beta readers, critique partners and editor.

Do you have any words of advice to beginning writers?

I do quite a bit of speaking at conferences and workshops, and my number one advice is to join an online critique site and local group. The more feedback you can get, the better. The online site will provide you with a great cross section of the country/world, and also age diversity.

I’ve been a member of http://www.thenextbigwriter.com for many years and the help I get there is fantastic. There are other sites that work the same way. Pay a small monthly membership, review chapters of other writers to gain points, then use those points to post your own work for review.

When were you first published and how did that happen? Was it a long or short journey?

I never intended to publish. I started writing just to exercise my brain because I was keeping my grandchildren five days a week and some weekends. I learned quickly I could only watch so much Spongebob, play games, and entertain four kids, infant to age six, without going completely crazy! I’d worked all my life and the change was a hard one.

After writing for a while, I decided I’d like to get better at it, so I joined the online writing site I mentioned. One of the people reviewing me on that site suggested I submit one of my manuscripts to a small press publisher in her area. I did on a fluke, thinking I’d at least get some professional feedback.

No one was more surprised than I when they called and said they wanted to publish the book. I signed a three year contract and the relationship was a good one. During that period, I learned a lot about self/indie publishing and decided that was the route for me. When my contract ended, I chose not to renew. They were gracious about it and I will always be thankful for the experience. For me, self-publishing has been the best decision I’ve made in my career.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a little of both. I start with an idea and just write by the seat of my pants, but once I get the story going, I make an outline just so I’ll know if there are enough plot points to write a whole book!

If you could get rid of something in your life that would give you more writing time, what would it be?

Man, if I never had to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom, I’d get a ton of writing done! But then again, I guess that would make me a robot!

What did you want to be (occupation-wise) when you were a child?

Until I started writing, I always said I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I’ve been a lot of things. Bank Teller, Dental Assistant, Sales Clerk, School Secretary. I’ve owned several businesses over the years. Gift shop, toy store, lawn and landscape business, cleaning business, and I traveled for quite a few years doing craft shows.

Most of my life, I’ve worked two jobs. A day job and a night job.

Name two authors we might find you reading when taking a break from your own writing.

So many I love. In no particular order. Jennifer Crusie, Lani Diane Rich, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Gibson, Jane Graves, and many more.

How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

Yes, I do base a lot of my characters on real people. In my Tizzy/Ridge Trilogy, almost every character is someone I know. I laugh when I get a review that thinks the names in the book are cheesy, because they are people who really exist! And, most are family members. Saint, Pattiecake, Sugarpie, Rayann, Synola, Jinx…hey, I’m not clever enough to come up with those!

In my companion book, Say You’ll Never Love Me, Raynebeaux Starr is a combination of two students who were on my campus during my years as a secretary.

Just about every name I use has history with me. For minor characters, I read the obituaries every day and make a list of names I like! Crazy, I know. But it’s a great place to get some really colorful Texas monikers. Since all my books are set in the Lone Star State, that’s important to me.

As for characteristics, I also take those from people I know or have known.

How can readers reach you or find you online?

The easiest way is through my website. http://www.anneverett.com I have my social network addresses and contact info there.

What’s your tagline? Why did you choose it?

Sass, sizzle, suspense…Texas style. I chose it because some of my books are light mysteries and some are full on romance. Each will have a sassy character and some steamy sex, and they are all set in Texas.

I saw a tee-shirt the other day and I’d wish I’d seen it earlier because I would have used it because it would work with my books. Classy, sassy, and a little smartassy. I love that!

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

If you’re a hard core romance reader, I’d suggest Tell Me a Secret. The characters are college age, so it is really young adult, but written in a way that also makes it a bit like women’s fiction.

I personally like a story to have more to it than just two main characters trying to get into each other’s pants and having sex for 300 pages. But that’s just my taste.

If you like a light mystery with some cheesy Texas humor, then any of the Tizzy/Ridge books would entertain you.

All my books have humor and sex so they are rated 17+.

Last Day of Sale! THE GIRL MOST LIKELY

Today's your last chance to purchase THE GIRL MOST LIKELY for .99 cents! Here's the blurb and a short excerpt that I hope tempt you:

Cara McLeod, the girl most likely to have the perfect marriage, is now divorced and, in her own words, “fat, frumpy, and over forty.” The thought of facing former classmates—and the ex-husband who dumped her—at her high school reunion terrifies her. Cajoled into attending by her kids and her best friend, Cara enlists help at the gym to lose weight and look great for the reunion. Personal Trainer Finn Cooper is more than willing to help—but does he have to be so to-die-for gorgeous?
Finn thinks Cara is perfect just the way she is. She’s everything he wants in a woman, except for one thing—she can’t get past the fact that he's eight years younger. To Finn, age and weight are just numbers. But can he convince Cara the numbers she worries about add up to only one thing for him—love?
Excerpt:

Cara woke to the delicious sensation of being cocooned warmly in Finn’s arms. The room was dark; the clock beside his bed read three a.m. She sighed and snuggled closer, breathing in his clean, masculine scent.

She could barely believe how she’d seduced Finn the previous evening. She’d never been so bold before, and just thinking about it made her face heat in a blush.

But she’d never felt so desired before. Finn made her feel powerful, sexy, unstoppable. With Finn, she could almost believe she was beautiful.

He stirred, and in the faint light, Cara saw his eyes flutter open and focus on her face. She smiled.

“Hi.”

“Hi. What time is it?”

“About three a.m. Go back to sleep.”

She ran her fingers over his face, loving the feeling of his stubbled beard under her fingertips. Feelings of tenderness for him swamped her. Making love with Finn was supposed to be a bit of fun. She wasn’t supposed to feel such overwhelming joy at being in his arms. She wasn’t supposed to be thinking about forever.

“Hmmm, that feels good,” he said, opening his eyes once more. He kissed the end of her nose, and his hands began an exploration of her body. “What do you like, Cara?”

Her breath caught as he touched the underside of her breast with his thumb. “What do you mean?”

“How do you like to be touched? Where do you like to be kissed?”

Everywhere, if it’s by you.  “I don’t know.”

“Trust me, Cara. You can tell me anything.”

I hope you enjoyed the snippet! THE GIRL MOST LIKELY is available for .99 cents, but hurry! Today is the last day of the sale!

ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID #MFRWauthors

Happy Book Hooks Wednesday! Today I'm featuring the third and final book in my Left at the Altar Series, ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID:

Dani Dipietro has always considered herself an ugly duckling in a family of swans. She's the bridesmaid her friends count on, but never the woman any man wants for his bride. So she plays the funny girl and guards her emotions, and her secrets, closely.
When Zach Morrison was dumped at his wedding, Dani was there to help him through the humiliation. A year later they meet again and once more Zach needs her help. To fend off the unwanted attentions of his former fiancé, he asks Dani to pretend to be his girlfriend. They play their roles a little too well, and make believe turns into reality. But their relationship comes crashing down around them when Zach's trust issues cause him to accuse Dani of cheating. Telling the truth means that Dani will betray a friend, something she will never do. But keeping her secrets means she may be destined to remain a bridesmaid forever.
And here's a few lines from the novel:

For several heart beats, she held herself rigid. And then something remarkable happened. He felt her sigh against his mouth as her arms wound around his neck and she pressed herself against him. His own response was swift and totally unexpected. He held her close, running one hand over the lush curves of her bottom, her softness speaking to a primordial part of his being. The taste of berries on her tongue made him want to strip off her clothing to taste every inch of her naked skin.

ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID is available at Amazon and Uncial Press. Please check my other books at www.janarichards.com

Sneak Peek Sunday with Burning Love

Happy summer Sunday everyone! What could be better than a beautiful summer weekend? Perhaps a beautiful summer weekend spent with a good book!

Today on Sneak Peek Sunday, I'm featuring BURNING LOVE, my humorous paranormal romance. Here's a blurb:
After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring. It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship. Firefighter Riley knows firsthand what a bad tenant she can be. But he needs money to finish the work on the house he loves. And something about Iris pulls at his heart…
Meanwhile, in Heaven, two angels watch over the young lovers. Angelica and Hildegard work in Heaven's Relationship Division, where angels match mortals with their soul mates. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?
In this excerpt, Iris tries to rent a room from Riley. But this firefighter has seen first hand the destruction Iris can cause:

“No, wait.” Iris stuck her foot in the door, wincing when the heavy wood met her sneaker-clad foot. “I need to talk to you about the room you have for rent.”

Finally it made sense. He’d placed an ad in the paper offering a room for rent, hoping to bring in a little extra cash to finish renovations. So far he’d had no takers and he was getting a little desperate. But not that desperate. The idea of living with Iris, her bedroom just across the hall from his, made Riley break out in a cold sweat.

“You’re kidding, right? You want me to rent you a room? You caused three fires at your last place. I’d have to be out of my mind to let you anywhere near my house.”

“Look, I know I’m not ideal roommate material.” She took a step closer, her gaze imploring. “I just need a place to sleep and store my things for the next six weeks and then I’m leaving Portland.”

He couldn’t think with Iris so close. Hell, he could barely form a coherent sentence. The light floral scent of her perfume tantalized his senses, intoxicating him. Riley drank in the sight of her, from the bright turquoise scarf holding back her dark hair to the colorful skirt in shades of blue and green that swirled around her ankles. She reminded him of beautiful, exotic gypsy.

A gypsy who could steal his heart without a second thought.

Thanks for joining me today. I hope to see you next week! And now, hop on over to some more great sneak peeks!

Always a Bridesmaid Excerpt #MFRWhooks

Happy Wednesday! Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm excited to be on a blog tour for the next couple of weeks to promote my newest release, ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID, Book 3 of my Left at the Altar series. I'd love for you to follow along. A list of scheduled stops is on my News & Appearances page. I'm giving away a $25 Amazon gift certificate through a Rafflecopter draw, so enter soon and enter often!

Here's a blurb from ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID:

And here's a new seven paragraph excerpt:

"Chantal and I were engaged twice and she let me down both times. You know that old saying, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me? I'm the sucker who got fooled twice and I'm not looking for a third time."

"At least now I know why Chantal's acting so hostile towards me," Dani said with a grimace. "So, what do you expect me to do? Ward off the evil seductress with a string of garlic and a crucifix?"

"Actually, I think that's for vampires, but you never know, it might work."

"Be serious, Zach."

"I'm very serious. I don't want to get mixed up with Chantal again, and she can't seem to take no for an answer. And what about you? You could have refused to go along with the idea."

"You didn't give me a lot of time to think over my answer."

She was right. He hadn't given her feelings much thought when he'd grabbed her like a cave man and kissed her in front of Chantal. He'd felt her shock as he held her in his arms, and he'd tried to quell her astonishment by gentling the kiss. It seemed to have worked. She'd relaxed into the kiss enough to kiss him back, and perhaps even enjoy it. What he hadn't expected was to enjoy kissing her as much as he had.

I hope you enjoyed my excerpt. If you're interested in winning extra prizes, subscribe to my newsletter. You can read details about the newsletter only contest on this post.

New Excerpt for Sneak Peek Sunday!

Happy Sunday! I've got a never-before-seen sneak peek for you today from my latest release, ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID, Book Three in my Left at the Altar series. This book just released on Friday, and tomorrow, January 20, I'm beginning a two week long blog tour. I hope you'll follow along! Here's a schedule of all my stops. The grand prize is a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

Here's  a blurb from ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID:

Here's today's six paragraph excerpt:

She picked up her fork and finished her dinner. When everyone had completed the main course, Adele cleared the plates. A few moments later she brought out individual lemon tarts and placed one in front of Dani. She lifted her dessert fork and took a bite. The fresh taste of lemon exploded in her mouth. The pastry was light and flaky and delectable. She hadn't allowed herself anything this decadent for a very long time. She closed her eyes in ecstasy and emitted a sigh of satisfaction.

"I wonder how many calories are in that tart?" Chantal said. "Do you really think you should be eating that, Dani? I mean, with your tendency to put on weight around your hips and butt?"

Chantal's expression was full of innocence and concern. Dani felt her face flame with embarrassment. She'd worked really hard to keep the weight off with exercise and diet, and had reached a point where she was more or less comfortable with her body, although she always felt as if she had five or ten more pounds to lose.

But with just a few words, Chantal had set back her confidence about eight years. She didn't know if she was angrier at Chantal or herself. She set down her fork, her delight in the treat evaporating.

Zach reached for her hand and brought it to his lips for a kiss. She blinked at him in surprise.

"I happen to think Dani's curves are incredibly sexy. Especially her hips and butt." He smiled at her, and kissed her hand once more.

Seven lines from 'There Goes the Groom' #MFRWhooks

Happy Book-hooks Wednesday! Today I've got seven lines from THERE GOES THE GROOM, book two in my Left at the Altar series. Here's the blurb:

Eight years ago Tony left Olivia at the altar. He was sure she didn't really want to marry him. Now he's back, and they're forced to work together.
Coming home isn't easy for Tony, because his father wanted him to work at a trade instead of going off to college. Their relationship is still unsteady. Even before Tony's return, Olivia began questioning the depth of her love for her fiancé, a man she chose because he was safe and reliable. The last thing she wants is a loveless, faithless marriage like the one her parents suffered through.
When Tony, who never stopped loving her, insists her fiancé is the wrong man for her, Olivia sets out to prove him wrong. But the sexual chemistry between them is still strong, and so are her feelings for him. Even so, how can she break her engagement, hurt her fiancé as she was once hurt? And how can she trust Tony not to abandon her like he did before?
If anyone does the jilting this time, she will.

Here's seven paragraphs from the opening of THERE GOES THE GROOM:

“I, Anthony James DiPietro, take you, Olivia Jane Taylor, to be my lawful wedded wife, from this day forward, till death do us part.”

The impact of the words hit Olivia. They were promising to love each other for the rest of their lives. How could anyone make a promise like that? How could she possibly know at twenty how she would feel at forty?

She swallowed and closed her eyes for a moment, thrusting the thought from her mind. All she knew was that she loved Tony. They’d have to figure out this marriage thing as they went along.

Like her parents figured it out?

Something inside Olivia snapped, like an elastic band reaching its breaking point. What if she and Tony didn’t make it?

The minister continued the liturgy. “Olivia, repeat after me, ‘I, Olivia Jane Taylor—”

“I can’t marry you.”

ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID, Book three of the Left at the Altar series, releases January 17, 2014.

See you next time!
