LIES AND SOLACE Free April 27-29!

LIES AND SOLACE is free at Amazon April 27, 28, 29! I hope you'll pick up a copy of Book 1 in my Love at Solace Lake Series.

She can’t live with one more lie. He can’t tell the truth.

Harper Lindquist is convinced she’s found the answer to her financial prayers. Unless she pours cash into crumbling Solace Lake Lodge, she’ll lose her family’s legacy. Her would-be savior arrives in the middle of a Minnesota blizzard and she’s determined to prove to her reluctant, and trapped, financier the lodge is a sound investment. But Harper isn’t completely honest with him. And she has no idea the lake is hiding secrets of its own.

Ethan James is a liar, but his money is very real. He isn’t convinced a broken-down inn is a smart investment opportunity. But the more he understands Harper’s dreams and desires, the more he wants to be the man to make them come true. The trauma in both their pasts means neither can fully trust the other. They must find the courage to love, to trust, and to accept, or yesterday’s sorrows will keep them apart.

And if you enjoy LIES AND SOLACE, read the other two books in the series!

No matter how deeply buried, secrets rise to the surface.

Scarlet Lindquist has agreed to help her sisters rebuild the dilapidated fishing lodge in Minnesota they inherited from their grandparents. Although the lengthy restoration is bringing the three sisters closer together, Scarlet’s support is temporary. Her leave of absence from her job in Chicago is temporary and she has no intention of staying at Solace Lake Lodge, where the lake holds dark secrets. When frightening childhood memories resurface, they are tempered by her fascination with an irritating contractor. If only she could trust her feelings for him. If only he could trust her.

Cameron Hainstock meets Scarlet at his brother’s wedding to her sister and their attraction is instantaneous. But Cam avoids the beautiful marketing executive. All his efforts are aimed at battling for custody of his only child. When the unimaginable happens and Cam faces the biggest challenge of his life, he’s reluctant to accept help to halt his downward spiral. Can they learn to trust each other and fight for a future together or will they go their separate ways?

The truth could destroy them. Or set them free.

Maggie Lindquist left Solace Lake determined never to return. Circumstances have pulled her back and she’s helping to restore her family’s dilapidated fishing lodge. When she agreed to the plan she didn’t expect to have to work side by side with the man who abandoned her ten years earlier. She didn’t expect to like him, or want him ever again. But can she trust him as she once did?

Luke Carlsson rushes home to tend to his ailing mother. Her lengthy illness means he needs to stay, at least temporarily. And to stay, he needs to work. Solace Lake Lodge offers him a job and an opportunity to work with the woman he’s never stopped loving. But the restoration is unleashing secrets hidden for decades and no one is left unscathed. Especially not Maggie and Luke, whose love needs to be resilient enough to forgive, and strong enough to build a future together.

#NewRelease from Mary Patterson Thornburg

Mary Patterson Thornburg is my guest today. I really enjoy having Mary visit because she always has something interesting and insightful to say. And today's post is no different. Mary is probably the most well-read person I know. Tell us about your all-time favorite re-reads, Mary!

I've been a reader for longer than I like to say (but what the heck, I'll say it anyway: at least 70 years), and I've been a re-reader for nearly as long. If a book is so good that I hate to reach the last page, then it's good enough to read again – not immediately, but after a year or two. Or five. Or twenty…  And since Jana has suggested I might list some favorite books here, it seems like a good idea to list a few of my favorite "rereads."

These aren't classics, although some are close. They're just good stories with what feels to me like touches of magic that make me remember them with fondness, as if I'd stepped into an old friend's home and become reacquainted with all the familiar rooms. They're all nearly as old as I am, some even older. To me, though, they're full of life.

1. Desiree, by Annemarie Selinko, is the fictional diary of a historical Frenchwoman, begun when she's fourteen – about the same age I was when I first read it – and ending nearly forty years later, when her amazing life takes another amazing turn.

2. Island in the Sun, by Alec Waugh. This is a very 1950s-ish book, a psychological thriller, love story, and social statement, set in a fictional British colony in the West Indies that's about to achieve its freedom. I like to read it in the dark days of a Montana winter.

3. Raintree County, by Ross Lockridge, Jr. A strange, ambitious, haunting novel of American history, tracing the life of an Indiana man, his friends, loves, and family from the 1840s through '90s. I read it from start to finish once, and have dipped into it many, many times since.

4. Dear Enemy, by Jean Webster. Published in 1915, this novel of letters about a young society woman who finds herself superintending an orphanage was one of my mother's favorites, and she turned me on to it when I was about eleven. It's funny, moving, and surprisingly modern.

5. The Peaceable Kingdom, by Ardyth Kennelly, is about a Mormon woman, the second wife of a Salt Lake City tailor in the 1870s or so. Funny, touching, horrifying, and warmhearted. I've always loved it.

6. Young Bess, by Margaret Irwin. "Bess" is England's Queen Elizabeth I, whose childhood and teens were fraught with adventure – and danger. Irwin was a great writer and careful historian, and Elizabeth shines in this book, which I've been reading off and on for probably sixty years.

7. The Crystal Cave; The Hollow Hills; The Last Enchantment, by Mary Stewart. Stewart's "Arthurian Trilogy," whose central character is not King Arthur but Merlin, might as well be one book instead of three, because once I've started the first part I can't stop until I've come to the end of the third. The story is told by Merlin, who may be a magician but who is also a very human and appealing character.

When Lizzie and Robert married, she thought he'd had enough of adventure to last a lifetime. After all, his voyage above the Arctic Circle had been a near-fatal disaster, and he never talked about it at all. He'd never even written about it, except in a long letter to his sister. But someone, somehow, had found out. And now, given another chance, he couldn't resist that call.

When he came back, of course, she would share in his fame, glory, and wealth. But what would happen to her if he didn't come back?

"You said it was all behind him!" Lizzie wailed. "He's never talked about it, and I've never mentioned it. You said he didn't want to do anything like that again, but now he's all excited about his report, and what the Society will say, and what a grand thing it will be for us all. Oh, Maggie, how I wish they'd never found out about that voyage. I don't know how they ever did. Now they'll give him money to go back, and he'll go back, and what'll happen to the babies and me, I don't know!"

"Why, he'll be rich and famous, and you'll bask in his glow," Margaret said, lightly. She knew how they'd found out about her brother's voyage.

"A rich, famous widow, that's what I'll be! Rich, famous orphans!"

"Now, now, Lizzie. In the first place, they'll not choose him. They'll read the part about that German, Swiss, whatever he was, and his horrible creature, and they'll suppose Robert is, well, eccentric. Too eccentric for them to support." That, she almost said, was what her husband, trying to be helpful, hadn't told his friend in the Society. But then she remembered that Lizzie didn't know Seville's part in it.

"They won't read it because he isn't putting that part in. He says something about finding a man under extraordinary circumstances and trying to rescue him, but the man has a fever and eventually dies. Robert makes very little of it." She looked down at her hands. "He doesn't know I read his story, his letters to you, Margaret. I thought he'd tell it to me, himself, someday, but he never has. And now, when I tried to draw him out about the man, he wouldn't say anything really. He knows what the Society would make of it, of course."

Margaret thought for a moment. "Well, then, they shall read it," she said. "I shall send it to them, the story he gave to me. That will be the end of that, then."

But she did not send them the story.

Anna Lores is having a sale. From now until April 30, 2018, ELLA'S TRIPLE PLEASURE, usually $5.99, is #onsale for .99 cents. Get it while it's hot! Here's Anna to tell us how she manages to fit writing into her day. Welcome to Journeys with Jana, Anna!

For a Writer: Finding Time to Write Is Critical
By Anna Lores

If you’re an author, there are a lot of things that you do to promote yourself and the books you write. From marketing to social media to all the logistical aspects of running a small business. But the most important thing you need to do is write. A lot. And to do that, you need time.

But what if you have another job, or kids, or other responsibilities? Time is one thing we can’t make more of, and in general, time is hard to manage. You try to find time to write, but also time for a spouse/significant other, kids, school activities, dogs, meal prepping, laundry and more laundry. I’m a mom of three teens, so the laundry hamper is forever full at my house. Finding those precious hours to write is a challenge for anyone, even when it’s your full-time job.

So, here’s what I do. I set my hours that I write/research/market during the week day while the kids are at school. Then I set evening and weekend hours for my writing around helping the kids with homework and activities, and my husband’s hectic work schedule. My husband and kids are my VIP’s, so they always come first. But, with a quality schedule managing my time, I get to have the best of both worlds—time for my family and my work. It takes planning, priorities and discipline, but it is possible.

My latest book, Ella’s Triple Pleasure, was mostly written while waiting for my children to finish math, music, sports or dance lessons. Or sitting in a car line. Ten minutes here. An hour there. It’s amazing how those small numbers add up.

And as one final consideration of the scheduling process, make sure to set aside time for yourself. Read some of those books on your TBR list. Get that massage. Take a girls’/guys’ night out. The happier you are, the better your writing will be, not to mention the better your quality of life will be, as well.

This work contains mature content, including graphic sexual descriptions and scenes, and is provided for adults only.

It takes three men to satisfy one woman’s needs…

Single mom and massage therapist Ella Winthrop isn’t looking for a relationship. She has enough problems without risking a business that barely meets her needs. Then her world is turned upside down by three men, each offering something she isn’t prepared for—love so deep it hurts, sex so hot she’s afraid she’ll melt from the pleasure, and a future beyond her wildest dreams.

Steamy businessman Cade Jackson has it all—money, looks, a giving heart, and a dominant nature—but Ella refuses to date a client even if she’s lusted after him for a year. After his
brother’s death, Garrett Winthrop moves back to town opening old wounds and even darker fantasies. Dr. Derek McGregor gives her balance and understanding that speaks to her soul. All three men force Ella to question the limits of a traditional relationship.

A cold breeze swept over them, cooling off skin drenched with the heat of lust. No woman had ever affected him so intensely. No woman had ever refused to date him. No woman but beautiful and sweet Ella Winthrop.

She shivered.

“Are you cold?” He stopped in the darkness of the forest. He should have thought about the cool nights here and brought dinner up to the main house. He needed to be more considerate. “I can give you my shirt.”

He let go of her hand and lifted his tee. He was boiling walking next to her. He was more than eager to take off his shirt or anything else he could get off for that matter. He wanted to be naked between the bed sheets, or up against a tree, or in the grass, or hell, anywhere he could get her into a compromising position. But he had rules for a lasting relationship. Take things slow.

“No, no.” She shivered again. A pink blush filled her cheeks. “I’m not cold.”

She reached for the hem of his dark T-shirt halfway up his chest, but her warm hands touched his bare abs. She told the truth. She wasn’t cold. Maybe her reluctance in the car was because she wanted him as much as he wanted her.

He breathed in and slowly exhaled as her hand glided down to the waistband of his jeans. Please, a little farther. Unbutton them. Make the first, big move. Show me you want me so I can take over.

He tightened his abs, showing off the top and middle of his eight-pack.

She shivered again. Her breathing turned shallow. She stepped closer, and he swore she made a soft, moaning sound like she had in the car. He wanted to hear her moaning under him so badly he could barely think straight.

He sucked in his abs, wishing he had worn loose-fitting jeans, so she could slip her hand down and touch his… The magical hands that massaged his body every week would be on the places he fantasized about having them.

Her fingers lingered near the top button of his jeans.

He waited. His eyelids drooped. Please, do it. Do it, Ella.

Jack cocked his head to the side. “You sure you won’t stay beyond the summer?”

Meg shook her head. They’d been over this ground before. “You know I need to get back to New York. I need to get on with my life.”

“Sorry I’m such a drag on you.” He gave her a wicked smile. “And you always say my age doesn’t matter.”

“Fifty-one doesn’t make you ancient.”

“I have my days,” Jack said, flipping over a card. “But I know what we have is transitory. Don’t worry about me getting carried away.” He smirked. “But you have been a breath of fresh air for me.”

“Cripes, the way you hang out around poker tables, anyone would provide a breath of fresh air.” Meg smiled and purposely softened her tone. “And you’ve been very good for me, too. I don’t know how I would’ve made it through the hectic pace of the last six months without your steady influence. You’ve always been there, and with few demands.”

“Perhaps,” Jack began wistfully, “I should’ve been more demanding.” He must’ve seen her nostrils flare, because he lifted a hand, forestalling her response. “You’ve renewed my faith in life.” He grinned devilishly. “Even in love.”

They reached her store and he stared at her car parked by the curb. “Harper doesn’t know where you live or anything about you. That means you’re safe for now, but he’ll probably search this area to find us. Stay cautious, okay? Drive your car from now on. Don’t walk anywhere.”

“Why are you avoiding my questions? You can tell me anything.”

“Not this. If you trust me, don’t ask those kinds of questions.” He tightened his fingers around her forearm as she tried to jerk free from his grip. “Listen to me, damn it. You mean a lot to me, but I can’t tell you this. At least not right now. That’s nothing against you. It’s all on me. I just need time to take care of this problem. Okay? I’m fucking stressed, in a shitload of pain, and I don’t need you to hound my ass.” He dropped his hand from her arm and scowled as though he just noticed the dirt and blood on his knuckles. “I’d like to go upstairs to clean up before you take me home. I don’t want Alan to know what happened.”

Mia dug through her purse with shaky hands, so angry she didn’t trust herself to speak.

He took the keys from her before the little pieces of metal slipped between her fingers, and he hugged her despite the grime on his skin and clothes.

Tears clogged her throat. Her mind screamed at her to push away from him, but the strength in his arms enveloped her and stole her will. His heartbeat soothed hers, and she no longer cared about his lies or if filth caked him.

At least not at the moment.

“I never meant for this to happen, Mia. I will fix this.”

“I know, but at what cost?” She pried her face from his chest to stare up at him. “You’re nothing if not determined, but I’m scared and confused. You have answers to my questions, but I won’t hound you for them as you so eloquently stated. I just thought we got past this. I thought you knew I would never insult or condemn you for whatever it is you did.”

“And I thought you knew not to push me too fucking hard.” His deep voice sent shivers of unease down her spine. “I have to keep certain parts of my past to myself.”

“Whatever.” Mia finally pushed against his chest for freedom and stomped to the stairwell door.

About the Author:

Writing is the fruit of happiness.

Amber Daulton lives her life by that one belief even though she normally isn’t so Zen.

As a fan of contemporary, paranormal, and historical romance novels alike, she can’t get enough of feisty heroines and alpha heroes. Her mind is a wonderland of adventure, laughter, and awesome ways of kicking a guy when he’s down. She probably wouldn’t be too sane without her computer and notebooks. After all, what’s a girl to do when people are jabbering away in her head and it’s hard to shut them up? Write! Nothing else works.
