#NewRelease from Darlene Fredette: Derailed Hearts

Darlene Fredette visits with a look at the sixth book in her Redford Falls series, DERAILED HEARTS. She's playing Quick Five with answers to five questions about her favorite things. Congrats on the new release, Darlene!

Thank you, Jana, for allowing me to share my new release with your followers!

Derailed Hearts is the sixth book in my Redford Falls series. Each book reads well on its own with many characters from previous books making an appearance. There is one character introduced in the very first book who makes an appearance in subsequent books. Though his presence may be short, he’s definitely a significant character. I’m talking about Thumper, the mysterious matchmaker in the form of a rabbit. Thumper is only a folklore legend…or is he? Those who believe in him, appreciate his power to unite destined hearts. Sometimes his attempt to play cupid is obvious and other times he is quite coy. But once someone has a ‘sighting’, love is in their future whether they are looking for it or not. Be sure to keep your eyes open for the mysterious matchmaker to make his appearance in Derailed Hearts

Quick 5 - Darlene's Favorites!

Favorite sightseeing – Peggy’s Cove, it’s a historical landmark and has awesome views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Favorite show to binge watch – Survivor, I’ve watched every season.

Favorite pie or cake – Both, if they have strawberries!

Country life or city life – a little bit of both, weekdays in the city and weekends in the country.

What’s your favorite kind of sheet?  Flannel and fleecy, the softer the better, but then I’m so comfy I don’t want to get out of bed, lol.

Derailed Hearts

Release Date: September 28, 2022

Blurb:

Nana Marley has her heart set on more great-grand babies, and with the help of a folklore legendary rabbit, she might receive her wish.

Single father and ER doctor, Ethan Marley, is ready to put down roots. He and his daughter embark on a train adventure across Canada from west to east coast. Boarding the train, he meets a woman who steals his breath, and he learns that she too is headed to Redford Falls. He is intent on maintaining a friendship only, but Jenn makes his heart race faster than the train.

Fashion designer, Jenn Martini, travels by train to Redford Falls to visit her father. Her plan for a solitude escape derails after meeting Ethan and his daughter. Sharing a confined-spaced cabin sparks an immediate attraction, and by the end of the trip, she longs to be a part of their family. Only as she opens her heart to love, do the scars from her past begin to heal.

With more in common than relatives in Redford Falls, is their love strong enough to overcome the truth behind the accident…and save their future?

Excerpt:

Avery pointed to herself, Ethan, and then Jenn.

Ethan rested his forehead against his daughter’s. “You want Jenn to come, too?”

Avery nodded.

The little voice in Jenn’s head told her to return to her cabin and to stay clear of Ethan and his daughter. They were as enticing as strawberry ice cream. “I would love to join you.” The words fell from her lips.

Ethan stood and set Avery on her feet.

The child held onto her father’s hand and reached outward with the other.

Jenn accepted the tiny hand and in doing so, she sensed a comfortable connection to this family—a connection she suspected would be incredibly hard to break.

No Pigeonholes by Lisabet Sarai

I’ve never been good at following genre rules. Partly this is because I hate reading, or writing, predictable stories. Partly, I suppose, I’m just plain contrary. I  want to follow my inspiration, without worrying too much about branding or pigeonholes.

Quite a few of my books defy easy categorization. My latest release, however, is an extreme case. Incognito is now in its fourth edition, but it was only the second novel I ever wrote. Back when the first edition came out in 2002, I was new to publishing and had no idea at all about romance tropes. Furthermore, the original publisher focused on erotica. Hence the book is five flames plus, with intense and varied sexual activities in every chapter.

On the other hand, for me, love and sex go hand in hand (though not necessarily love and monogamy). At its heart, this is a novel about love. Betrayed by her first lover, the heroine Miranda bears terrible emotional scars. When someone whom she likes as a person makes any sort of sexual overture, she freezes and can’t respond. The primary plot thread follows her journey to a loving relationship with her sexually adventurous colleague Mark, as she gradually learns that trust and lust are not antithetical. Incognito includes tender scenes side by side with the raw sex, and has many of the classic hallmarks of a romance, including a proposal, a wedding and a honeymoon.

Is Incognito erotica, then? Or romance? It doesn’t strictly fit the criteria for either. But never mind. If you’re open-minded about sex and you crave happily ever afters, you’ll probably enjoy it.

Blurb:

Shy and serious by day—insatiable by night.

During the day, Miranda Cahill works diligently on her doctoral thesis. At night, she has sex with strangers.

Public coupling, multiple partners, age play, spankings, bondage, lesbian lust—each salacious adventure exposes new dimensions of her depravity. Her secret life explodes when she realizes her masked partner at a kink club and the charismatic colleague courting her are in fact the same man.

Dickens scholar Mark Anderson seems like an affable, uncomplicated Midwesterner, but he has hidden depths, myriad talents, and an unlimited appetite for erotic variety. With Mark as her guide,  Miranda comes to accept the intricacy of her own desires, as well as to trust her heart.

Reader Advisory: This novel is an erotic romance featuring a committed relationship and culminating in a wedding. Nevertheless, the main characters participate in a wide range of taboo sexual activities, both together and separately.

Excerpt:

A knock on her office door brought Miranda back to the here and now. She had been lost, uncharacteristically, in the manuscript, a classic piece from the collection of the British Museum. There were no annotations, no commentary, on the photocopied pages. Her laptop, neglected, had turned itself off to save power. She sighed and shook her head as if to clear away the lascivious images.

“Come in,” she called, wondering who it could be. She often worked on Saturdays, precisely because the department was deserted and she could read and write undisturbed.

The grizzled head of Harold Scofield poked through the door. “Hello, Miranda. I am sorry to intrude, but I have someone to whom I would like to introduce you.” Miranda smiled to herself; her genial thesis advisor always sounded like a grammar textbook. The gray-bearded figure in suspenders bustled in, followed by an attractive young man in dark-framed eyeglasses.

“Miranda, I would like to present Mark Anderson, our new lecturer. Mark will be handling the Dickens course for the summer session.”

“Mark, this is Miranda Cahill, my most promising graduate student.” Miranda blushed, and Dr. Scofield’s eyes twinkled. “Miranda has chosen a rather controversial topic for her thesis, a new interpretation of the corpus of Victorian erotica.”

The newcomer’s polite smile expanded to a grin. “Really. That’s fascinating. Sounds far more—stimulating—than my dissertation on the metaphorical significance of orphans in Dickens and his contemporaries.”

Miranda’s blush deepened as she noted the double entendre. She met his teasing gaze, almost defiantly. “Yes, it is an intriguing topic, and I believe one of considerable literary and social significance, as well.” He had thick, dark hair, slightly tousled. His eyes behind the glasses were velvety brown with glints of gold. In his face, she saw intelligence, energy, and humor.

“Miranda has championed an unusual theory, that the explosion of sexually-oriented writing during the latter half of the nineteenth century was a reflection of actual practices, rather than a reaction against repressive public morals.” Her advisor appeared to be enjoying the role of agent provocateur. “She believes that the detailed accounts of sexual adventure and aberration published during the era chronicled real experiences, not merely fantasies.”

“Hmm.” Their bespectacled companion looked both amused and interested. “What evidence do you have to support this proposition?”

“Well, to begin with,” said Miranda, automatically adopting an academic tone, “a significant fraction of these writings are first person accounts. And a surprising number are related from a woman’s perspective. If this were primarily a literature of fantasy and titillation, I would expect a male point-of-view to dominate, as it does in modern pornography.” Miranda was encouraged to see that her audience listened attentively and gave due consideration to her points.

“Secondly, these tales are full of real-world details and commentary that would be superfluous and even distracting in fictional erotica. The protagonists discuss social issues such as poverty, child abuse, oppression of the lower classes, things that can only detract from a work intended as escapist fantasy. Even a hack pornographer knows better than to mention the unpleasant or the mundane, illegitimate pregnancies, unpaid bills, rising damp. Yet references to such items are common in the corpus.

“Finally, I find in many of these writings a thoughtfulness that conflicts with the conventions of the pornographic genre. The narrators are engaged in a wide variety of sexual activities, which are described in vivid and provocative detail. At the same time, in many cases, they reflect on their own desires and behaviors, sometimes justifying themselves in the face of the official morality, sometimes castigating themselves for weakness and sinfulness. Either way, there is a psychological depth that would be redundant in fictional erotica.”

“So, what you are saying,” interposed Mark with a grin, “is that a fictional character would simply go ahead and bugger his maid, whereas an individual writing a clandestine diary would spend some time and effort wondering why he wanted to bugger his maid, before he got around to actually doing it?”

Review Quotes:

“…brings a fabulous level of intensity and sensuality to the reader.” ~ Dawnie, Fallen Angels Reviews (5 Angels)

“Sarai skillfully combines the present day storyline with some tantalizing Victorian history. This book is well researched, erudite, well plotted and very sexy. Highly recommended.” ~ Emma K., Amazon (5 stars)

"Truly a buffet of pleasures, with something for everyone. There's the enjoyment of piecing together the mirroring, multi-layered narratives. Historical and literary echoes provide extra spice for the careful reader—in particular Shakespeare fans might enjoy the parallels to Miranda in The Tempest—all sweetened with abundant humor and clever feminist twists. Always you'll find masterful prose in sizzling erotic scenes that offer flavors to please any palate. And last but not least, the novel will change your view of the world in surprising ways."  Donna George Story, Erotica Readers and Writers Association.

#NewRelease-THE QUEEN OFF EMERALD FALLS by J.J. DiBenedetto

J.J. DiBenedetto is showing off his new release, THE QUEEN OF EMERALD FALLS, on my blog today. Don't forget to enter J.J.'s giveaway. Welcome!

The Queen of Emerald Falls
by J.J. DiBenedetto
Genre: Romantic Comedy

She's spontaneous, passionate and has a habit of mangling the English language.

He's calm and controlled and always has the perfect thing to say in every situation.

If their differing personalities were the only obstacle, they'd probably have smooth sailing. Unfortunately, things aren't that simple in the town of Emerald Falls, and life keeps throwing curveballs at Sheryl Jones and Dr. Jon Hardy.

If they're going to find true love, they'll have to deal with Sheryl's archenemy trying to destroy her business, and Jon's interfering brother showing up to try and ruin his life. And then there's the vindictive daughter of the richest man in town, not to mention a stolen vintage Rolls Royce.

Can this star-crossed couple fight their way past all the obstacles and make their way back to each other without losing their jobs, their sanity or going bankrupt in the meantime?

Romantic comedy fans will love this quirky mix of "How I Met Your Mother" and a daytime soap opera.

Who designed your book covers?

The cover for “The Queen of Emerald Falls” was designed by Rachel Rossano (www.rachelrossano.com), who’s an author in her own right as well as a talented designer.

I initially worked with her to redesign the covers for another series of mine, the Jane Barnaby Adventures, and she did an amazing job, so I went to her again for this book.

I’m thrilled with her work, and what makes her really great to work with is, since she’s an author herself, she already knows what readers are looking for and how to create an original design that also fits what readers are looking for in each genre.

Another reason the covers are so good is that I didn’t really direct her, which is a lesson I learned with my very first book.  I worked with a very talented artist who hand-painted the cover to my specifications, and it was beautiful…and totally not right for the genre or reader expectations.  It was a hard lesson but a valuable one!

She might be gone, but she was still everywhere, in every room of the Chalet.  The place itself was a reminder of her; she’d been the one to recommend it to him when he’d grown tired of that wretched temporary apartment near the university.

The kitchen provided no relief from thoughts of her.  The marble island brought back memories of Sheryl’s disastrous attempt to make French toast.  A glance at the espresso machine called to mind the night she’d somehow caused it to spew hot coffee all over the floor.  He still didn’t know how she’d managed that; according to the manufacturer, it was physically impossible for the machine to do what she’d made it do.

She’d made over his living room against his will, defiled his kitchen, done unspeakable things to the finest espresso machine money could buy, driven him to distraction in more ways than he could count - and yet, if she were to come walking back through his front door, Jon knew he’d most likely forget all that and kiss her as though both their lives depended on it.

He could call her.  It would be the easiest thing in the world.  And didn’t he tell his patients that most of the obstacles they complained about were of their own making, that they had the power to overcome them, that - usually, anyway - all they really had to do was get out of their own way?

He did.  And it was absolutely true.  It was also - as so many of those patients remarked at the end of sessions - far easier to tell someone else to do, than to do it oneself.

J.J. (James) DiBenedetto was born in Yonkers, New York. He attended Case Western Reserve university, where as his classmates can attest, he was a complete nerd. Very little has changed since then.
He currently lives in Arlington, Virginia with his beautiful wife and their cat (who has thoroughly trained them both). When he's not writing, James works in the direct marketing field, enjoys the opera, photography and the New York Giants, among other interests.
J.J. is the author of the Dream Doctor Mysteries, the Jane Barnaby Adventures and several other works.

#NewRelease from Glenda Thompson - BROKEN TOYS

Glenda Thompson makes a return visit to my blog with BROKEN TOYS, her thriller from The Wild Rose Press which just released on December 16, 2020. She's back to tell us her reasons for writing about human trafficking. She also shares a little about her favorite things in FAST FIVE. Please welcome Glenda Thompson!

I have two messages in Broken Toys. The first is to bring awareness to human trafficking. It can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. We need to be more observant of our surroundings. Keep an eye on our children, our friends, and family. Keep everyone safe. We need to trust our guts. Yes, that kid throwing a fit may be just having a temper tantrum, but he or she might be in the process of being snatched as well. Teenagers make easy targets for “Romeos” who sweep them off their feet making them believe they are “in love.” If it doesn’t feel right to you, say something. Especially in today’s environment of everyone wearing masks. It’s so easy for a child to disappear in a split moment.

The second message is to be true to yourself. Own your identity. Be who you are meant to be. Don’t be afraid you have to pretend to be someone else to be loved. If you love yourself, others will love you, too.

Broken Toys is my first published novel. I have a drawer full of partially finished manuscripts so I would have to say I’m most excited that I finally finished it. LOL. For most of my life, I have had two goals. To see my art hanging in a gallery and to have a book traditionally published. I have now achieved both.

FAST FIVE:

Favorite color? The green-blues of the ocean

Beach vacation or sightseeing in the city? Beach

Pie or cake? Yes, please

Bubble baths or steamy showers? Bubble baths

Country life or city life? Country without a doubt

Blurb, BROKEN TOYS:

Broken Toys is a bumpy ride down a twisting red dirt road.

Texas Ranger Noah Morgan has his life together—with a great job and the girl of his dreams. Too bad it's all based on a lie. A single phone call threatens to bring it all crashing down. After an irate citizen complains shoddy workmanship has left him with a booby-trapped driveway, and the local sheriff's office is too busy to respond, Noah takes the call. The investigation of local scam artists uncovers a human trafficking ring, Noah fights to avoid being swept back into the sights of his murderous family—people he escaped at the age of seventeen.

Can he keep his past a secret or will his carefully crafted life come to a violent end?

Excerpt:

“While we wait for the mobile crime scene lab to arrive  from Austin, I need you to sign this consent-to-search form. Next, Ranger Trammell and I will photograph the scene to preserve it in situ—as it currently is.”

“Now you wait one cotton-picking minute,” the old man growled. “How long will all that take? What if I don’t want to sign your verdammt form? I need my car. The old lady has several doctors’ appointments in San Antonio this afternoon.”

Noah lifted his hat again and brushed sweat off his forehead before it rolled into his eyes. “Tell you what. Sign this piece of paper giving us permission to search your driveway, and as soon as we finish the photography, Ranger Trammell and I will change your tire. Then you can pull your car out of the driveway. If you don’t sign it, we will have to find a judge and get a warrant. Going the warrant route will delay things considerably.” Noah shrugged. “The choice is yours. Either way it goes, you won’t be able to pull back in for some time. We’re going to have to tape off your driveway and process it as a crime scene. Is there somewhere you could stay for a few days?”

“Crime scene?” Mr. Schmidt crumpled as if he’d been kicked in the solar plexus. Bewilderment flooded his features. For the first time since the rangers arrived, the man looked old. “My driveway is a crime scene?”

“I’m afraid so, sir,” Noah said, using the tone he reserved for scared kids, grieving family members and sagging old men who hadn’t tasted sweet tea in more than sixty years. “Hip implants, bits of bone and teeth are not normally used for road base. It looks like someone may have disposed of a body in your driveway.”

#NewRelease from Gayle Irwin: RHIANN'S RESCUE

Gayle Irwin visits today and she's talking about how she combines her love of animals and her commitment to animal rescue with her writing. Her new novella, Rhiann's Rescue is a prequel to her Pet Rescue Romance series. She's also making us aware that November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month. Thanks for the heads-up, Gayle!

Of Pets and Romance

November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month, and I’m excited to share my pet rescue holiday romance novella, Rhiann’s Rescue, the prequel to my Pet Rescue Romance series. My heroine, freelance writer Rhiann Kelly, transports dogs for rescue organizations and cares for her elderly grandmother. They live in Spokane, Washington and spend winter months in Arizona. Rhiann dreams of starting her own animal rescue sanctuary. Readers will meet several animals including the grandmother’s beloved senior rescue cat, Poppy, in the story. My two cats are more than 15 years old; therefore, I wove in an older cat and released the book during Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month. The story also introduces readers to a potential love interest for Rhiann – art gallery owner Elias Griffin, who learns about pet rescue and adoption from her. My passion for writing and for pet rescue and adoption is combined in this book as well as in my Pet Rescue Romance series, which currently consists of three books and one short story.

I’ve been a pet rescue and adoption advocate for decades My animals are adopted – the two cats and two dogs (a Shih Tzu and a Springer Spaniel); the Shih Tzu in my first novel within the series, Rescue Road, whose name is “Jax,” is based on my own rescued and adopted pup, Jeremiah. . Animals provide love and loyalty, and therefore, I think fit in nicely with a romance story.

I support pet rescues, including donating a percentage of book sales to different organizations. About 6.5 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters and rescues every year, according to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and nearly 1.5 million still die in animal shelters. This is a primary reason I weave pet rescue and adoption into my romance books and donate to animal welfare groups.

Book Description for Rhiann’s Rescue:

Rhiann Kelly dreams of starting an animal rescue sanctuary, and her beloved grandmother desires to see her achieve that dream. However, they don't agree on when or where. Because of the older woman's health, Rhiann thinks it best they stay near large cities; Grams wants to return to Montana, where she was born and raised. During their annual winter trip to Arizona, the two women clash once again over relocating ... as well as about Rhiann's lack of desire to date and potentially end up with another broken heart. However, when art gallery owner and nature photographer Elias Griffin steps into her life, Rhiann reconsiders. Can she maintain her decision to not become romantically involved with someone again and keep her eyes fixed on helping animals and caring for her grandmother, or will she decide Elias is worth the risk of possible heartbreak?

Excerpt from Rhiann’s Rescue:

Smile on his face, the man asked, “So what do you do that makes you love your work?”

Rhiann closed the laptop. “I’m a writer.”

“Really? Awesome! I’m a nature photographer and art gallery owner.” He extended his hand. “Elias Griffin.”

She shook his hand. “Rhiann Kelly.”

“Rhiann? A unique, beautiful name.”

“Elias – that’s a name a person doesn’t often hear.”

“Technically, I’m Elias Griffin the third. However, since my father and grandfather have already passed on, I dropped the more formal version.”

“I’m sorry they’ve passed. So have mine.”

“And I’m sorry for your loss, Miss Kelly – or is it Mrs.?”

“You were right the first time,” Rhiann responded, maintaining her smile.

“Would you mind if I sit for a few  moments, Miss Kelly?”

Rhiann shook her head and responded, “No, please. Have a seat.”

“Thank you.”

He chose the chair closest to her. Rhiann placed her laptop in a blue, green, and yellow tote bag and looked at her visitor. Dressed in a short-sleeved green polo shirt and khaki pants, the dark brown-haired man appeared more dressed for the golf course than the pool. She pondered his presence in this 55-and-older community. Being Grams’ caregiver allowed Rhiann to stay here.

“So, do you have family here, Mr. Griffin?” He gave her a quizzical look. “You don’t seem to fit the required age group.”

He smiled. “Neither do you, Miss Kelly.”

“I take care of my grandmother, so when we come here during the winter, I can stay with her.”

“My mother is giving snowbirding a try for the first time. She came down the first of the year. I have a home in Mesa with an art gallery in downtown Phoenix and one in Tucson. I visit Mother whenever I can.”

BROKEN TOYS: Cover Reveal from Glenda Thompson

Author Glenda Thompson joins me for the cover reveal of her upcoming book BROKEN TOYS. The book releases on December 16, 2020 and is now available for pre-order. Enjoy!

Blurb:

His life is perfect. Too bad it’s built on a lie

A sixth-generation Texan with Scottish roots, Glenda Thompson can 'bless your heart' with the best of them. As a former emergency medical technician married to a south Texas Lawman, she's used insider information from both their careers as inspiration to build her Broken world of Texas Rangers with hidden pasts and dark secrets.

When she's not busy embarrassing her children or grandchildren by dancing in the middle of a country road during a rainstorm, she can be found huddled in her writing cave with her law enforcement technical adviser/husband working on another story in her Broken universe.
