#BacklistThursday - BURNING LOVE

Today I'm starting a new feature on my blog where I feature books from my backlist, or occasionally other writers' backlists. First up is BURNING LOVE, my fun paranormal romance. I call it paranormal light because rather than shifters, demons and vampires, I've got angels who want to match mortals with their soulmates. BURNING LOVE came out in 2010 and was my first novella/novel with The Wild Rose Press.

Blurb:

After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring. It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship. Firefighter Riley knows firsthand what a bad tenant she can be. But he needs money to finish the work on the house he loves. And something about Iris pulls at his heart…
Meanwhile, in Heaven, two angels watch over the young lovers. Angelica and Hildegard work in Heaven's Relationship Division, where angels match mortals with their soul mates. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?

Excerpt:

“Renting the room to you is starting to look like one of the smartest things I’ve done lately,” he said with a smile.

Without thinking she set the boxes on the fridge and took his hand. “I’m serious, Riley. I don’t mind telling you how scared I was. Whiskers and I came very close to sleeping on a bench in the park with the other vagrants. So, thank you.”

Riley gently brushed his fingers across her cheek, sending a rush of desire coursing through her body. “You’re welcome. But I know you would have been okay, even if I hadn’t rented you the room. You’re a strong girl.”

Iris didn’t feel very strong at the moment. In fact, she felt as weak as a kitten, and just as vulnerable. She let go of Riley’s hand and gave a shaky laugh.

“Yeah, that’s me. Strong as a marshmallow.” She picked up the boxes of food and turned away, afraid to look him in the eye and make a fool of herself.

“Hey, what’s this?” Riley asked. Iris turned to see him staring at her calendar.

“That’s just a little visual reminder for me. Only five more weeks until I hit the sunshine and you get rid of me.”

Instead of laughing the way she thought he would, Riley continued to stare at the calendar.

“Right,” he said. “Only five more weeks.”

She wanted to ask him if he was okay, but something in his voice stopped her. Surely, he wouldn’t miss her?

Excerpt:

Riley looked into her beautiful blue eyes and her smiling face and did the only thing he was capable of doing at the moment.

He kissed her.

Maybe later, he told himself, when sanity returned, he’d think of a hundred reasons why pulling Iris into his arms, holding her snug against his body, and plundering her soft, sweet mouth was not a good idea. But for now, right now, as she wound her arms around his neck and made tiny sounds of excitement deep in her throat, it felt exactly right.

Heaven. Having Iris in his corner made him believe everything was possible.

He stepped backward toward the stairs, pulling Iris with him, intent on taking her upstairs to his room. He suddenly tripped, nearly losing his balance. He glanced behind him and saw the object he’d stumbled over. A set of luggage sat next to the stairs, still bearing tags from the retailer.

“What the hell is this?”

Iris kissed his neck. “I’m sorry. I should have taken them up to my room.”

Iris had bought new luggage for her trip. Her plans hadn’t changed.

She’s leaving me.

The thought acted as effectively as a bucket of cold water tossed over his head. What was he doing? She was leaving in three weeks and didn’t plan to return. The calendar in the kitchen reminded him of that every day. Why start something that would only lead to heartache?

He’d already lost too many people in his life.

And Riley instinctively knew that if he let himself get close to Iris, let himself love her, a part of him would not survive when she left.

Why do people like scary movies?

People like to be scared. If they didn’t, horror movies wouldn’t be so popular. Why would people willingly subject themselves to a frightening experience? After all, experts tell us that when we watch a scary horror movie, our body reactions – increased heartbeat, sweaty palms, decreased skin temperature and a spike in blood pressure – are the same as they would be if we were in a real life scary situation. Professor of communications Glenn Sparks from Purdue University says "We can tell ourselves the images on the screen are not real, but emotionally our brain reacts as if they are.”

So why do so many people love scary horror films if they have such a strong reaction to them?
Psychologists have a few ideas about what makes horror films so alluring.

1. Tension – Viewers love the suspense, mystery, shock and gore of the movies.

2. Sensation seeking – People who like horror films are the same people who like other exciting things like bungee jumping and rollercoasters.

3. A sense of unrealism – We know it’s just a movie so even though it scares us, the fictional nature of horror films affords viewers a sense of control by placing psychological distance between us and the violent acts we have witnessed.

4. A source of catharsis - a way of purging negative emotions and/or as a way to relieve pent-up aggression. Author Stephen King argues that horror acts as a safety valve for cruel impulses. If we can experience such an impulse on-screen, we don’t have to act it out in real life. Unfortunately, researchers say the opposite is closer to the truth; people who consume violent media feel more hostile.

5. A sense of justice –Justice is served when the villain gets his in the end. But what about when innocents end up hacked to pieces?

6. Morbid fascination – It’s the same sort of impulse that has us staring at car accidents; we just can’t look away.

7. Defiance - Sometimes young people watch horror movies just because adults look down on those kinds of movies.

I think a certain segment of the population will enjoy horror movies just as some people like country music and romance novels and other don’t. It’s all a matter of taste.

Do you have any favorite horror or Halloween movies? Don’t ask me to answer this question; I’m way too scared to watch horror movies!

And just to prove it, here's the blurb and excerpt from my paranormal/comedy romance BURNING LOVE, which is not the least bit scary:

The Haunted Hotel

The Fort Garry Hotel was built in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1913 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway as a posh stopover for train travellers. The architects took their inspiration from the Park Plaza Hotel in New York City. Over a hundred years later, this twelve story, 340-room hotel is still a symbol of opulence with its marble floors, bronze railings, panelled ceilings, and crystal chandeliers. It’s a place guests truly enjoy staying.

In fact, some guests enjoy it so much they never leave.

Ghost sightings, unexplained noises and strange flickering lights have been reported for years at the hotel. One guest room in particular is said to be haunted: room 202. The story goes that a young woman hung herself in the closet of the room upon learning her husband had been killed in a car accident. Guests have described a woman in a cloak or a robe hovering at the end of the bed, or being awakened by the sensation of someone climbing into their bed. Hotel maids claim to have seen blood seeping through the walls of the room.

But the haunting isn't limited to room 202. The same woman who haunts the guest room is said to have been seen crying in a corner of the lounge after asking an employee for a glass of water. In 1989, two staff members were cleaning the kitchen overnight. At about 4 a.m. they heard noises coming from the locked dining room. When they went to investigate they saw a man eating dinner. By the time they brought someone from the front desk, the man had disappeared, even though the dining room doors remained locked.

Other employees have had strange experiences as well. Here’s testimony from an employee who worked as a front desk clerk and night manager, courtesy of the website PSI-Can -- Paranormal Studied & Investigations Canada
One occasion I had an airline attendant check out early in the morning almost hysterical. She said she woke up and there was an elderly man dressed in old fashion style clothing with a black bowler hat and handlebar moustache, he had been standing at the foot of her bed watching her sleep. On a number of occasions I had upset women tell me they woke up to the sensation of someone stroking their cheek while they slept, other times to their bedside lamp being turned on and off.
Guests calling down with noise complaints about the room next to them…of course the room wasn't occupied. Coming back to the room after being away to find the room window left open….in Winnipeg in the winter…trust me no housekeeper would do this.
As for myself…where do I begin?? The bellman and I working one night and heard a crash of dishes…not one or two….but dozens and dozens…crash, crash crash….no broken dish to be found and us being the only two to hear it.
For about 1 year I was the evening duty manager. Part of my job was to walk every floor of the hotel 2-3 times a night ensuring cleanliness and order.
I could walk the floors night after night day after day with no problem. Then every so often I would have the distinct sensation that A. I was being followed or B. I was being watched.
For whatever the reason I always felt it was a man….and that I wouldn't be harmed….if anything he was curious or even amused by what I was doing……..don’t ask me why I felt this way. I just did.

Do I believe the hotel is haunted? I honestly don’t know. But to paraphrase Shakespeare, there’s more things in heaven and earth then exist in the philosophy of mere mortals. So when it comes to ghosts, I'm keeping an open mind.

Thanks for reading my post! I'm offering an ecopy of my humorous paranormal novella BURNING LOVE to one lucky commenter. No ghosts, but it does have a couple of angels! Tell me if you believe in ghosts or if you've ever seen a ghost. Or just tell me your plans for Halloween. I'll make a random draw from all comments on November 1.

Sneak Peek Sunday with Burning Love

Happy summer Sunday everyone! What could be better than a beautiful summer weekend? Perhaps a beautiful summer weekend spent with a good book!

Today on Sneak Peek Sunday, I'm featuring BURNING LOVE, my humorous paranormal romance. Here's a blurb:
After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring. It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?
In this excerpt, Iris tries to rent a room from Riley. But this firefighter has seen first hand the destruction Iris can cause:

“No, wait.” Iris stuck her foot in the door, wincing when the heavy wood met her sneaker-clad foot. “I need to talk to you about the room you have for rent.”

Finally it made sense. He’d placed an ad in the paper offering a room for rent, hoping to bring in a little extra cash to finish renovations. So far he’d had no takers and he was getting a little desperate. But not that desperate. The idea of living with Iris, her bedroom just across the hall from his, made Riley break out in a cold sweat.

“You’re kidding, right? You want me to rent you a room? You caused three fires at your last place. I’d have to be out of my mind to let you anywhere near my house.”

“Look, I know I’m not ideal roommate material.” She took a step closer, her gaze imploring. “I just need a place to sleep and store my things for the next six weeks and then I’m leaving Portland.”

He couldn’t think with Iris so close. Hell, he could barely form a coherent sentence. The light floral scent of her perfume tantalized his senses, intoxicating him. Riley drank in the sight of her, from the bright turquoise scarf holding back her dark hair to the colorful skirt in shades of blue and green that swirled around her ankles. She reminded him of beautiful, exotic gypsy.

A gypsy who could steal his heart without a second thought.

Thanks for joining me today. I hope to see you next week! And now, hop on over to some more great sneak peeks!

A Sneak Peek Sunday look at Burning Love

Happy Sneak Peek Sunday! Today I'm offering a sneak peek from BURNING LOVE, my humorous, paranormal, contemporary romance. Here's the blurb:

After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself homeless.  She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring.  It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship.  Firefighter Riley knows exactly what a bad tenant she can be.  But he needs money to finish the work on the house he loves.  And something about Iris pulls at his heart…Meanwhile, in Heaven, two angels watch over the young lovers.  Angelica and Hildegard work in Heaven's Relationship Division, where angels match mortals with their soul mates.  The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them.  Can the the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime before time runs out?

Here's six paragraphs from BURNING LOVE:

Riley’s heart tripped over itself when he answered an insistent knock at his door. Surprise didn’t come close to expressing what he felt when he discovered Iris Jennings on his front porch. The woman who’d occupied his thoughts for the past week wore a deer-in-the-headlights expression, obviously as shocked to see him as he was to see her.

Buddy let out a volley of sharp barks, picking up on Riley’s tension. Sigmund Freud had nothing on Buddy when it came to recognizing anxiety. “Buddy, sit.”

The black lab quieted immediately and sat obediently at his feet. Iris gave Riley a wan smile. “Well, at least you didn’t sic the dog on me.”

Riley folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the door frame, attempting a nonchalant air.  “Iris Jennings. What a surprise. My work doesn’t usually follow me home.”

“I’m sorry. In all the confusion of the fire I’ve forgotten your name.”

“Riley Benson.” It was humbling to know she didn’t remember his name. What on earth was Iris Jennings doing at his house? And if she didn’t know his name, how had she found him?

BURNING LOVE can be purchased from The Wild Rose Press and at other major e-bookstores.

A Sneak Peek at Burning Love

It's great to be back at Sneak Peek Sunday! Today I'm featuring BURNING LOVE, a contemporary romance with touches of humor and the paranormal, in the form of two meddling angels! Here's the blurb:

After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?

Here's a six paragraph sneak peek:

Riley looked into her beautiful blue eyes and her smiling face and did the only thing he was capable of doing at the moment. He kissed her.

Maybe later, he told himself, when sanity returned, he’d think of a hundred reasons why pulling Iris into his arms, holding her tightly against his body, and plundering her soft, sweet mouth was not a good idea. But for now, right now, as she wound her arms around his neck and made tiny sounds of excitement deep in her throat, it felt exactly right.
