“Are you sorry you married me?”
He hadn’t meant to blurt out the words. Jamie lifted her gaze to his, her eyes wide.
“I wouldn’t blame you if you were.” Ben rose to his feet, too nervous to sit. “I rushed you into this marriage. And let’s face it, I’m not much of a prize.”
She stunned him by laughing. “Come on, be serious. Have you looked in a mirror lately?”
He shook his head. “The looks are meaningless, simply the outside shell. I’ve learned it’s what’s inside that counts more. I’ve worked hard to be a good person. I need to earn the regard of the people who mean the most to me.”
“You’re so hard on yourself.” Jamie set a couple of mugs on the table.
“I’m an alcoholic, Jamie. I have to be hard on myself.”
“But it’s not everything you are. You’re a dad and a brother. And you’re amazing in those roles.”
He was also a husband again. He wondered if Jamie would come to believe he was amazing in that role as well. “You haven’t answered my question. Do you regret marrying me?”
“No, I don’t. The reasons I married you are still valid. I’ll do whatever I can to help you keep the girls. They belong with you. And I still want to be their mother.”
Such clear-headed logic. Her answer should have pleased him, but he found himself wishing she’d said she didn’t regret marrying him because she wanted to be with him. Because she felt something for him.
She’d told him she cared for him, and he cared for her. For now, it had to be enough.
He watched as she poured hot water into the tea pot and set the kettle back on the stove. “What about you? Do you regret marrying me?”
“No. Absolutely not.” Ben stepped forward to take her hand. “I have no regrets.”
She bit her lip and stared into his eyes. “I’m glad. The girls need us. I want this to work.”
“Yeah, so do I.”
He tugged her closer. The scent of her perfume intoxicated him with its sweetness. As he raked his fingers through the silky strands of her hair, her eyes drifted closed. Slowly, Ben lowered his mouth to hers, kissing her softly, tentatively.
He couldn’t explain what happened next. She made a sound in her throat and gripped his shirt, bringing him closer. A switch snapped on in his brain and desire roared to life. Ben ravaged her mouth, sliding his tongue over hers again and again until he was dizzy. He gripped her hips and pressed against her, letting her feel how much he wanted her. All he knew was he needed her like he needed his next breath.
“I want you, Olivia.”
The minute the words left his mouth he realized the enormity of his mistake. He immediately felt Jamie’s withdrawal. She stiffened, dropped her grip on his shirt and took a step back, her gaze averted.
“Jamie, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I said that. Please forgive me.”
“It’s all right. I understand.” She took two more steps away, still not looking at him. “It’s been a long day. I think I’ll go to bed. Goodnight.”
“Jamie—”
“Please, don’t apologize. I understand, I really do.” She glanced up, giving him a wan smile, her gaze somewhere over his shoulder. “When you love someone that much, it’s hard to let go. Goodnight, Ben.”
She hurried from the room and a moment later Ben heard the bedroom door down the hall softly close. Ben swore under his breath. What devil had prompted him to utter his dead wife’s name in a moment of passion with Jamie?

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.
In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg, Canada. She loves to hear from readers and can be reached through her website at www.janarichards.com
