What Makes a Perfect Gift? by Birdie Song

In this blog post, author Birdie Song asks us about the best gifts we've received or given. I have to say that for me, the best gifts are the ones that are really wanted or needed. Or the ones that tell the receiver that the giver understood them well enough to know what would be meaningful to them. In most cases, it has nothing to do with how much something costs. Thanks for raising such an interesting question, Birdie. Welcome!

What makes a good gift?

Like words, gifts are a limited means of expression, and can’t always convey what you want to say. And even if they could, there’s no guarantee that the receiver will understand. Everyone’s experiences are different, and what may mean something wonderful to a group of people may still offend an individual. Yet both perspectives remain completely valid.

Gift giving isn’t my primary love language, so I was curious about exploring it in my new novella, “The Guy From The Internet”. Being far away from the heroine Holly, love interest Florian needed more than just words to convey his birthday wishes for her. It took several revisions of this manuscript before I figured out what gift he would choose to represent their friendship and his intentions.

And, of course, because this is a romance story, his gift was received perfectly.

Real life, of course, is often less clear. Sometimes I turn to philosophical wisdom to help me decide what to get someone. But as nice as the thought of giving premium rubber bands and olive oil seems to me, I just don’t think it’ll be everybody’s cup of tea.

What do you reckon makes a good gift? How do you decide what to buy someone — say, someone close to you versus someone you barely know (hello, office Secret Santa)? What’s the best gift you’ve ever given? What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

The Guy from the Internet by Birdie Song

A sweet romance with a touch of family drama.

Holly Chee does not have her life together. She's flip-flopped on uni courses and career choices, and somehow scared off her long-term fiancée-to-be, much to the chagrin of her immigrant parents.

But she does have her streaming channel, where she broadcasts her art from her one-bedroom Mount Lawley apartment. And she has that guy from France... assuming he's even who he says he is.

"The Guy From The Internet" is a sweet #OwnVoices Asian-Australian romance novella, set in the world of Somerville Downs.

Release date: 2 Nov 2020

Excerpt:

You know how something can happen, and suddenly all the crap you were dealing with—no matter how important it felt at the time—just vanishes into thin air? My day was reborn, thanks to this drab padded envelope, with its a French postmark and a Paris return address.

It’s hard to concentrate on drawing when that parcel is sitting right there, staring at me while I try to look directly into the webcam. Pretty sure the undo combo on my keyboard is starting to fade.

But I can’t open it yet. I want to wait for Rin to get home, to get online, then open it with him.

Is that weird? Am I obsessive? Friends do that kind of thing too, don’t they? Even when they’re all grown up… or supposed to be? Rin’s still not on. It’s later than usual for this time of the week. Not that I’ve memorised his schedule or anything.

As we get closer to midnight, I end the broadcast and decide I’ve been tragic for long enough. I pick up the envelope and give it a proper shake. Something rattles inside.

Waiting any longer would be weird now. It would totally send the wrong signal. Like I don’t care. Or that I care too much.

I’m definitely overthinking this.

I grab the rip tab and pull it open. As soon as it detaches from the packaging, a message pops up on my screen.

#NewRelease from Sadira Stone: Love, Art and Other Obstacles

Sadira Stone joins me today with her newest book in the Book Nirvana series, LOVE ART AND OTHER OBSTACLES. Sadira wants you to know that the ebook version is on sale for $2.99 until May 29. Look forward to a sexy read!

Thanks so much, Jana, for giving me this chance to meet your readers and tell them about my new book, Love, Art, and Other Obstacles. Book Three in the Book Nirvana Series, this modern love story features my youngest couple yet, just 22 (her) and 26 (him). I loved the chance to revisit the Book Nirvana bookshop and the colorful characters who work/hang out there. Readers of Through the Red Door and Runaway Love Story urged me to give Margot her own story, and Elmer (from RLS) was too juicy a character not to give him his chance in the spotlight. Tropes and themes in this steamy, contemporary new adult romance include rivals to lovers, chosen family, opposites attract, and the art world.

Tagline: She’s a free spirit. He’s a one-woman man.

Blurb:

Rejected by her family for her bisexuality, graphic artist Margot DuPont yearns for a life with no fences, no limits, and no family ties. Between college, work at Book Nirvana, and an art competition, she barely has time for her part-time girlfriend, much less a flirtation with her competitor.

Dumped into the foster system at a young age, ceramics artist Elmer Byrne craves a big, loving family of the heart. His artist family almost fills that need, but something is missing...until Margot. But when he offers his heart, her thorny defenses shatter him.

Thrown together in an art competition that could jump-start one artist's career, but not both, their irresistible attraction forces them to reconsider the meaning of success.

Excerpt:

“Tell you what,” he said. “How about if we have drinks and talk about anything but the competition?”

“Because…why?”

“You’re a real hard-ass, aren’t you?” He rolled his eyes. “Because I like you, Margot.”

“Why?”

He leaned so close their foreheads almost touched, a challenge simmering in his smile. “Have a drink with me and find out.”

If there was one thing she couldn’t resist, it was a challenge. On the other hand, he might not like her so much if he knew about Darcy. Let that be the test, then. Let him prove he wasn’t one of those possessive, controlling guys Darcy warned her about.

“Okay. I will.” She stepped back. “But you should know, I’m sort of seeing someone.”

His thick auburn brows contracted. “Sort of?”

“A woman.”

His nostrils flared on a deep inhalation, but he held her gaze. “Is it serious?”

“Not really.” Might as well serve up the truth, raw and ungarnished. Might as well be honest with herself too. “She lives in Berkeley. I only see her every month or two.”

Holding her gaze, he nodded. “Okay then. Thanks for telling me.” The tense lines of his mouth relaxed into a casual grin. “So, drinks?”

Well I’ll be damned.

#NewRelease and #Review: THE FLIP by Linda Palmer

I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of Linda Palmer's THE FLIP, book 6 in The Psy Squad series. The series is about a group of young psychics at the World Security League who use their powers to solve crimes. I had a blast reading the book. Take a look at my review below the excerpt. THE FLIP releases May 17, 2019, but you can pre-order your copy at Amazon right now.

Blurb:

Needing a change, Emily has moved, found a new job, changed hair color, lost weight, and dropped her first name. In short, she has flipped her entire life, except for one pesky thing--she can’t seem to stop reading minds.

Excerpt:

I was maybe halfway home when a dark Tahoe behind me caught up and slowed, its powerful engine growling. I used retying my shoe laces, as an excuse glance back surreptitiously. The SUV had stopped, too. My heart rate kicked up a notch as I stood up. I began walking again and a little faster.

“Jai Storey!”

I turned and saw that the window on the front passenger side had been lowered. Had someone from work seen me walking home? The SUV eased forward until it was even with me. The dome light flooded the interior. Detective Rossi in an unmarked patrol vehicle.

“Where’re you headed?”

“Home.” I pointed in the general direction of my apartment building.

“It’s about to rain. Get in.”

Resenting his tone, I kept walking.

Detective Rossi put the Tahoe into motion and kept pace with me. Although there wasn’t a soul around to see, my face flushed with embarrassment. Realizing this was a battle I couldn’t win--he had the badge, not me--I abruptly stepped over the grass to the curb and tried the front passenger door.

“Back’s unlocked.”

“Not happening.” I waited. He unlocked. I got in.

“Where do you live?”

“Kirkland Apartments. Why are you stalking me?”

“That’s a serious allegation, Ms. Storey.” He put the Tahoe in motion.

“And what else would you call it?”

“Coincidence. I work this part of town.”

Baffled by this whole encounter, I didn’t speak again until we got close to my apartment building.
“Anywhere along here is fine.”

He braked. “Doing anything Sunday night?”

“Working. Evening shift.”

“Where?”

I told him.

“What time do you get off?”

“Why? Are you planning to stalk me again?”

“Maybe.”

My Review:

I loved this story! This latest installment in the Psy Squad series from Linda Palmer is a definite winner.

After a bad experience at her job with the World Security League that left her feeling betrayed, psychic Emily Jai Storey decides it’s time to flip her life. New job, new city, new life. And a whole new her. She loses weight, dyes her hair, even begins using her middle name. But her main flip is a change in attitude. Emily Storey may have been something of a doormat, but Jai Storey will not be.

And most of all Jai Storey will not be psychic, because her psychic abilities have often brought her unhappiness. Unfortunately, that proves harder than she expected.

When Jai meets Detective Sebastian “Bastian” Rossi, neither of them is prepared for the strong and immediate feelings they have for each other. But a serial killer is on the loose. Bastian and Jai must work together, along with her psychic friends, to end the killer’s reign of terror. But can they catch him before he kills again? And will Jai realize that Emily and her psychic abilities are a part of her that no amount of flipping can erase?

I loved that the story was told in first person in Jai’s voice, which is a combination of snark and vulnerability. Though we never get inside Bastian’s thoughts, we always know exactly what he’s thinking and exactly how he feels about Jai/Emily.

With Jai’s age of twenty-one, I would classify this novella as a new adult romance. Jai/Emily is definitely trying to find herself and where she fits in the world. The author did a great job of showing her growth and her acceptance of who she is. No flip necessary.

I would definitely recommend this book, and it’s made me excited to read the other five books in the Psy Squad series.

#AuthorInterview with Leslie Scott

Debut author Leslie Scott is my guest today, and she's sitting down for an interview. Leslie's first book, THE FINISH LINE, has just released from The Wild Rose Press. It's a new adult novel about two young people who are meant to be, despite the trauma in their lives. Please welcome Leslie Scott!

Why did you choose this genre?

You know, I felt a very strange kinship with the New Adult Romance novels I’ve read over the past few years. I can still vividly recall the excitement and promise of that phase of my life. Writing characters who are smart and strong, but still learning how to really live is evocative and challenging. I love it.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read THE FINISH LINE?

I want them to come away happy and fulfilled, as if they’ve made a family of new friends in Arkadia and went on a journey with them.

What genre have you never written that you’d like to write?

Paranormal. I’m super excited for some things I have in the works, but I really love Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. The idea of writing in a world I created with all my own rules sends my mind racing in all sorts of directions.

When were you first published and how did that happen?

Was it a long or short journey? The Finish Line is my first submitted and first published novel. I had given myself five years to get published or find an agent. Not sure what was at the other end of that ultimatum, but five years none the less. A year after completing my first polished manuscript I signed my contract with The Wild Rose Press. It’s been a whirlwind journey for sure, one I am incredibly thankful for.

If writing is your first passion, what is your second?

My son and his education. Several years ago we had to pull him out of public school. He’s a gifted child and has a difficult time conforming to the setting and structure within a modern public school. He flourished once we removed him from that setting and teaching (or chauffeuring him between other teachers) is now my other full time job.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

We currently have four cats and three dogs. I’m probably a cat person, but my son’s Boston Terrier is pretty darn cute (and googly eyed). We have rescued all of our pets and my ten-year-old son takes pride in being able to rescue kittens and find new homes for them (with the help of an awesome, local non-profit).

What did you want to be (occupation-wise) when you were a child?

This is so funny, because as a child I either wanted to be a teacher or a writer. Now, it just so happens, I’m both. I can’t think of any other things in the world I’d want to do.  I’m happy and grateful to do what I love every day and I hope that all of you enjoy my writing as much as I enjoyed doing it!

What are two (or more) of your all-time favorite books in any genre?

Okay so, I could write a list of authors and books I loved, then break it down by genre, and so forth and so on. To be a writer one must be a reader. However, I’m going to swing for the fences here. I’m not particularly a Sci-Fi fan, but, if you ever get a chance to read John Scalzi’s The Old Man’s War… do it. I fell in love with the entire series, but that first novel? Is just insane and amazing. I read it in four hours, straight through, without stopping.

What do you like best about your hero from THE FINISH LINE?

I like that Jordan made a family for himself. That even after all the bad things in his life, he found good in Arkadia. He loves, and loves big.

What do you like best about your heroine from THE FINISH LINE?

Her loyalty. There are just certain things that Raelynn would never consider doing. Ever. Including betraying those she loves. That, to me, is commendable and makes me root for her.

How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

Raelynn’s name just came to me, no real reasoning behind it. I loved the way it sounded and went from there. Jordan’s, though, has a story. I knew he was going to be my first romance hero and I wanted his name to mean something to me. So, about halfway through the writing process I changed his name. Two of my very first celebrity crushes were Jordan Knight from NKOTB and Christian Slater. So, Jordan Slater for the win.  Jordan needed to be larger than life, his physical characteristics spawned from that need. Raelynn, however, came from a cashier at a gas station. I don’t know why, but I took one look at her and thought “that’s what Raelynn looks like” and there you have it.

How can readers reach you or find you online?

They can find me at my website: lesliescottromance.com, on Twitter @leslieSwrites, and on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/lesliescottwrites

Tell us a little about your current work in progress.

In The Finish Line you meet a host of characters from the Arkadia, Texas racing scene. Including Raelynn’s little sister, Breanna. She’s sassy, brassy, and well… she’s a novel unto herself. Thus, I’m working on Book Three of the Arkadia Fast Series. Hot Lap (Book 2, Hadley’s novel) should release sometime next spring.

What’s your tagline? Why did you choose it?

Romance with a shot of Nitrous. I chose is since, ya know, racing and all.

Thank you, Jana for hosting me today. I really appreciate it and I’ve had a wonderful time answering your questions. I hope your readers have had as much time reading them!

Blurb, THE FINISH LINE:

Another night at the races is more than burnt rubber with a hit of nitrous. For one young woman, it's navigating trauma, love, and loss in the stifling Texas heat under the watchful gaze of her brother’s best friend and reigning King of the Streets, Jordan Slater. Home in Arkadia again, Raelynn Casey starts to heal from a terrible incident at college. She finds love in Jordan, a member of her brother’s circle of racing buddies. When another in the racing circle, the guy who took her to her high school prom, exposes his feelings for Raelynn, tragedy erupts like a tank of race fuel. Guilt, remorse, and pain must be overcome before Raelynn and Jordan can race to The Finish Line.

Author Bio:

Leslie Scott thrives in the middle of chaos. Not because she home schools her son and rides herd over the family's zoo of indoor pets or listens to her soul mate wax poetically about all things car and related. Oh, no. That's nothing. The real chaos is the characters in her mind, elbowing and tripping each other to get to the front of the line so they can be the next romantic couple in one of her stories. Her family is her passion. Writing romance is her dream.

Excerpt:

He turned away from me and watched the approaching truck stop several hundred feet from our
hiding spot. The silence seemed to stretch on forever. Again, he said a lot without saying a thing and it made me nervous as hell. I couldn’t handle that sort of silence.

“I’m not going to pretend like it didn’t happen, Jordan.” Because it had happened. It had happened and I’d been left reeling from it. When he’d followed up kissing me stupid in his driveway after my graduation with verbally shooting me down hard, I’d been left with all sorts of unsettled emotions.
“For a while, I thought you’d broken my heart.”

“I never meant to.” I barely heard his words over the roar of the small truck Hunter raced as he fired it up.

As much as I’d wanted to hurt him after that, as many nights as I’d spent awake in my dorm room
wishing I could make him feel what I felt, I never could have. Not then and not now. I loved him too much for that. I always would.

“You didn’t,” I assured him quietly. The smell of melted rubber from Hunter’s burnout assaulted us. “I had to learn what being broken really felt like to know it.”

He turned toward me, his face and eyes softening in a way very few people had seen or would ever see.

My knees went weak.

“Rae—”

I held a hand out to stop him. This line of conversation wasn’t what I wanted out of us right then.
I wanted us back to an ease I could navigate with far more clarity. “Life is about learning. Besides, Hunter East taught me more than you ever could have.”

The concern vanished from his face and was replaced with a contorted expression of annoyance.

“Jesus, Rae.”

The smug smile on my face was as genuine as they came. I was proud, in a pesky girl sort of way.

“There are things I could have taught you, Hunter East never would have dreamed of,” he growled.

Ann Everett and CHIRP #newadult

I'm pleased to have Ann Everett back at Journeys with Jana for a return visit. Did you know August is National Read a Romance month? I have to confess I didn't, though for me, every month is read a romance month. Ann gives us a brief history of this national event, and tells us about her newest release, CHIRP, published by Amazon Kindle Press. Welcome, Ann!

August is National Read a Romance month, so I thought I’d do a bit of research about how the romance novel has evolved.

According to Wikipedia, Mass Market romance really took off after WWI. Category romances in the 1930’s, and in the USA modern romance genre fiction was born in 1972, with Avon's publication of Kathleen Woodiwiss's The Flame and the Flower; it was the first of the modern "bodice ripper" romance novels.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_novel 24/50

Over the years, many genres of romance have developed. One of the latest is New Adult Romance, which rose in popularity in 2012 due to many self-published books.

My latest romance, Chirp, falls into that category, which means the characters are in their twenties. Having been named a Kindle Scout Winner, Chirp is published by Amazon Kindle Press.

Chirp
A woman hiding from her future…

Heiress to the largest steel company in America, twenty-year-old, socially awkward Blaze Bledsoe hides out at Dessie Bishop’s farm. For the last three years, Blaze has eluded one investigator after another, but just when she thinks she’s safe, a PI closes in. Her luck is about to run out in more ways than one.

A man running from his past…

Rance Keller, a tough, hard-living ex-con, fresh out of prison for a crime he didn’t commit, arrives to claim the house his grandmother left him. Finding a strange girl living there, his plans for a solitary life take a turn. Her lack of modesty, no filter, and word of the day fetish baffles him, but those big green eyes and sweet mouth have him losing sleep.

Welcome to Bluebird, Texas

Where two damaged people with secrets, discover trust can lead to passion.

Excerpt from Chirp
Blaze

Blaze reached room three and referred to the next list: Blue eye shadow. Black mascara. Mauve lip gloss. Enhance beauty mark at corner of mouth.

Only thirty-nine years old, Ginny Elliott had met her demise when her biker boyfriend failed to negotiate a turn. Thank goodness she’d worn a helmet. Camouflaging a mangled face presented a challenge. Being tossed ten feet into the air before landing on the hard pavement had proved too much for the rest of her bones.

Ginny was dressed in a leather jacket and low-cut tank, her voluptuous breasts swelling over the top. Nothing like formaldehyde to pump up a woman’s upper thorax. Blaze tugged at her own T-shirt, conscious of the small boobs she’d been blessed with. Removing the pencil from behind her ear, she scratched out part of the note and made changes.

Proper shading and contouring made women appear pounds lighter and years younger. Once Blaze had finished, Ginny looked like a Harley Harlot. Blaze always regretted the client couldn’t witness the magic. She jotted another message, tucked it into Motorcycle Momma’s pocket, and zipped it.
“When you get to heaven, give this to Larkin Montgomery. You’ll recognize her because we look alike.” With only a few pictures for comparison, she wasn’t sure about that. The older she got, the less she remembered about her mother.

With her supplies back in place, Blaze peeked into the hallway. The coast appeared clear. No Cameron waiting to walk her out. Maybe she’d finally been rude enough for him to get the message.
Outside, a sharp February breeze cut at her face, but spring hid right around the corner. Almost time to break up the garden spot. Even though she liked living alone, she missed Dessie. The sweet woman had left the place to her only grandson, but Blaze would never meet him.

Since he was serving a fifteen-year prison sentence. She’d be long gone by the time he showed up.

Rance

Rance stepped outside and followed the aroma of bacon to Bubba’s Diner. Just what he needed after going heels to Jesus all night. He removed his last cigarette and tossed the package into the blue trash barrel at the corner of the building. Really should give up the bad habit, and he would. Later.

It occurred to him, last night’s tag-team event with the BFFs, had fulfilled his goal—fifty-two women in fifty-two weeks. No more pressure. With an early start and few stops, he could make it to Bluebird in one day. Grab a quick breakfast. Crank up the Harley. Hit the road. Couldn’t wait to see the place again. Enjoy the seclusion and relax in his grandmother’s old claw-foot tub. That’s what he loved about the little country town.

Everything remained the same. Never any surprises.
