I'm a powerful and respected Alpha, but the wolf Mette covets my leadership. I'm injured when my conniving enemy challenges me.

After losing my pack and nearly my life, I go to lick my wounds in the human world, but my beloved mate Tia knows that a wolf's broken spirit can heal, and there is only one true leader of our pack.

Note: Caleb is a very short werewolf action romance story with a mild heat level, moderate violence, and a HEA. This Romantic Moments story is the perfect length for a lunch break, before bed, or any time you want a quick, romantic read.

Excerpt:

Reaching the village, Tia shouted to the nearest wolf to bring the healer.

Finally we made it to our cabin where I collapsed on our bed. Tia brought a cup of water and lifted my head to help me drink. Gazing at her, I realized how much I loved her and how much of a risk she'd taken by becoming my mate.

An aggressive howl echoed from the clearing near our cabin. This wasn't just any howl, but one of challenge for leadership of our pack.

Tia's horrified, furious gaze met mine and she whispered, "Mette." Then she snarled through clenched teeth. "The coward!"

I'd only known real fear at one other time in my life—the day Tia and I had been attacked by hunters and she'd been lost. My fear now mingled with regret. I'd promised her a happy life, but we were about to lose it and there was nothing I could do about it.

Drawing a long breath, I painfully pushed myself to a sitting position.

"You don't actually intend to fight him?" Tia demanded.

"I have to."

WARRIOR PRIEST by Kate Hill #onsale for #99cents!

Kate Hill visits today with her science fiction romance WARRIOR PRIEST. We learn a little more about Kate as she answers five quick questions about her likes and dislikes. WARRIOR PRIEST is on sale for .99 cents at Smashwords and Amazon until June 30. Welcome Kate!

Quick 5

- Coffee or tea?

Tea. For some reason, I’ve never been able to stand even the smell of coffee. It probably sounds strange. Almost everyone I know loves coffee. Personally, I’m a water drinker, but I also enjoy tea sometimes. I like plain black tea, or sometimes peppermint, orange spice, or lemon. I enjoy most flavors of tea.

- Movies: romantic comedies, thriller, or horror? Got a different favorite?

I’m a huge horror movie fan. I’ll watch any type of horror movie from any decade, from silent black and white movies to the latest releases. Some of my favorites are The Howling, A Werewolf in England, Psycho, Crimson Peak, and the Hell House LLC movies.

- Bubble baths or steamy showers?

Showers! I don’t like sitting in a bathtub. I like running water. 

- Chocolate or caramel?

Chocolate! My favorite is dark chocolate, but I’ll eat pretty much any kind of chocolate. Strangely, I’m not wild about chocolate cake, but a piece of chocolate or a brownie, I can’t resist! I also love chocolate chips in oatmeal cookies and banana bread. Chocolate chips make just about anything better. 

- E-book, paperback or audiobook?

I enjoy all three for different reasons. I love ebooks because no matter where I am, I always have a variety of books at my fingertips without lugging around a giant book bag.  Paperbacks are great for favorite books that I want to hold in my hands and physically turn the pages. They’re also great if you want to makes notes or highlight favorite quotes. I know you can make notes and highlight in some ebooks, too, but I like to have a physical copy of stories I love. When I’m going to sleep, I like to listen to audiobooks. To me, there’s a good reason for every type of book. I love books!

What happens when a warrior priest from a strict religion meets a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune?

Jade and Selena are as different as two people can be, but to facilitate an alliance between their worlds, they engage in a cultural exchange. With their galaxy in danger from a planet that wants to conquer or destroy all others, they realize the importance of their assignment, but it is difficult for a warrior priest and a nonviolent priestess to understand each other.

Selena is both attracted and appalled by his old school masculinity, and Jade is tempted to break his vow of celibacy until marriage due to his powerful desire for her. Will this unlikely pair not only find common ground, but unconditional love?

Excerpt:

At six feet three inches with a large build, Jade often considered his cell at the temple cramped. During his travels, he’d lived in caves, cottages, tents, and mud huts. He had even endured a Kimbrian prison camp. Still, he wasn’t fully prepared for Selena’s little house.

“It used to be a caravan,” she said.

They removed their boots, left them on a rubber mat, and hung their coats on hooks near the entrance.

“Ned and Rayne helped me renovate it so that I’d have a little more space.”

“Ned?”

“Yes. Before joining the commune, he was a builder. Well, he still is. He’s been in charge of building many of our shelters and clinics all over Neidress. He’s super talented and smart.”

“I got that feeling.”

“He’s also great with his hands. He can build just about anything.”

“That’s a little surprising,” Jade admitted, picturing the plump, bookish priest.

“I know, right?” Selena chuckled. “It’s said that looks can be deceiving. Come on. I’ll put some wood on the stove. It’s freezing.”

While Selena walked to a small, old-fashioned iron stove toward the center of the house, Jade glanced around. The caravan was made for efficiency, but it had an almost storybook charm. It fit Selena perfectly, but Jade felt too big for the house.

“It’ll heat up fast in here.” Selena stood and brushed wood chips off her clothes.

“That’s a guarantee.” Jade smiled and stepped closer to take her in his arms.

Secondary Monday with Kate Hill

Paranormal romance writer Kate Hill is here today to talk about Secondary Characters. Her Fangs and Fists series features several characters who were once secondary characters in other books. Please welcome Kate Hill!

First Impressions of Secondary Characters

Secondary characters, especially in series books, are often as important as the main characters in a story. Many times characters who are stars of their own book are introduced in a previous story in the series. They need to make a good impression, not only because they add to the richness of the story, but because they should create enthusiasm for future stories.

Sometimes you know which secondary characters will have their own book, other times they take even the author by surprise. In my new series, Fangs and Fists, I knew that three particular secondary characters were the heroes and a heroine of the next two books in the series. Their stories had already been planned and I knew them as well as the hero and heroine in Fangs and Fists 1: Bolt. While writing the first draft of the story, several other secondary characters became, at least in my mind, potential main characters for more books. Since writing Bolt, I now have two additional stories plotted with the potential for more. The world of Fangs and Fists has been a lot of fun to explore, and I hope it will continue throughout 2017.

Since everyone responds to characters differently, good secondary characters might also connect with readers in a way the author doesn’t expect. When readers express interest in a certain secondary character, it’s usually a great opportunity for authors to examine their work in a way they might not have considered. Your next hero might be a character that you almost overlooked.

Secondary characters are often more than just tools to enhance the main characters. They have the power to expand fictional worlds in ways that might amaze both readers and authors.

Fangs and Fists 1: Bolt
by Kate Hill
An erotic paranormal romance from Changeling Press.

Blurb:

Kiara remembers what life was like living free–before she was taken by demons and bred to gladiators so that the new generations of wolves would retain their ferocity but forget their freedom. Mated to top gladiator Grit, she has a son with this surprisingly gentle lover who is also planning their escape. When Grit is killed in the arena, his close friend Bolt upholds his promise to protect Kiara and the cub.

Bolt and Kiara have loved each other from the moment they met, but they buried their feelings because she was mated to his best friend. When Grit dies, despite their guilt, Bolt and Kiara surrender to their desire for each other. Will their love be strong enough to help them win freedom from their evil masters?

Excerpt:

Bolt came to her again that night.

As before, the guards opened the door abruptly.

Kiara had been pacing the cell while Jett slept soundly in the adjoining room. She turned toward the door, her heart pounding with anticipation.

Wearing only his loincloth, Bolt entered behind the first guard. His blue gaze flew to Kiara. The guards said nothing, but left them alone, closing the door behind them.

"Bolt," Kiara said, meeting him halfway across the room.

They embraced tightly and he covered her face with gentle kisses.

"I had a strange conversation today," she whispered in his ear, hoping that if the masters were listening, they wouldn't be able to hear her. "A huntress said we should be ready tonight."

"Yes. Her name is Zari. She's been planning this escape with us for months. Me, Grit and a couple of others. Victor is fighting again tonight. His opponent is one of ours, a wolf named Glacier. Since killing Grit, Victor's next fight has been greatly anticipated. From what I've heard, most of the demons in the tower will be watching."

"You really trust her? This Zari woman?"
