The Twenty-One Year Contract: #NewRelease by L.B. Griffin

Lynn Griffin, who writes as L.B Griffin, is here today to give us a look at THE TWENTY-ONE YEAR CONTRACT, the prequel to her 20th Century romance/mystery SECRETS, SHAME AND A SHOEBOX. This UK author also tells us a bit about what makes her tick. Welcome Lynn!

Blurb: The Twenty-One-Year Contract

Only a simple shoebox, but with life-changing secrets…

Kathleen Gray—talented, a little wild, at times rebellious, but always popular—has a fun, easy life in rural Somerset, with a doting family.

Suddenly, they are gone, everything is changed, and she has only Uncle Jack. Try as he might, he cannot be father and mother to her—he has a business to run and his own life to manage.

Kathleen takes a chance and becomes Kate Westfield, fending for herself in London, with a new life built on her hopes, dreams and new friends. She could hardly have imagined that one of those friends has a shoebox full of answers.

Excerpt:

After a glass of water, Jack made himself a cup of tea and returned to the job in hand. This was going to be much harder than he could ever have imagined.

Working deep through the night, Jack methodically sifted through volumes of paperwork until light inched its way through the curtain. Though he felt thoroughly ready for bed, he continued searching, his aim to find at least a smidgen of information about his niece.

Randomly tidying up as he went, Jack noticed an encyclopaedia oddly extended over one of the top shelves. He tried pushing it back into place. It was jammed. It looked awkward. Pulling it out to check the depth of the book, he found a box file hidden behind. Upon the side panel was one word, capitalized in thick bold lettering: KATHLEEN As the hazy sunlight grew, puzzled, Jack pulled the curtains to lend natural light, took the file off the shelf, sat back in Henry’s chair, and looked inside…

Author Lynn Griffin and her character Kathleen sat down for a short interview. First of all, let's ask Kathleen why she ran away.

“In a nutshell? I wanted to find my birth mother. But then there of course there was Uncle Jack. I absolutely adore him.  Since my parents died… he had to take care of me… I knew he needed to get on with his own life. He needed to settle down, get married, have a family of his own. He couldn’t do that with me around.”

Now let's ask Lynn Griffin to tell us about herself. What are your stories about?

Courage and survival. I’ve learned from so many people I’ve worked with and taught. I admire them and their courage.  They don’t see themselves in that way. But boy they sure are!

In real life what was your most embarrassing moment?

There are so many! Okay. I was 16. It was the early 70s, yes, I’m that old! Mini Skirts were still very much all the rage, (yes, I’m that old). I was stood in an Engineering workshop when my knicker elastic gave way and they dropped to the floor. I tried to control the urge to flee. Instead, I batted my eyelashes, (well I like to think I did), I stepped out of my knickers, bent down, picked them up and totally mortified scurried out the building as if holding a scarf.

Do you travel to do research? Anything exciting happen?

I love travelling. Wherever I travel I learn, observe, pick up tips from the country or area and hold them for later. I’ve loads of stories but this one might interest you. I was on a cruise. Amazing to think, what luxury! It was a special wedding anniversary. It was midnight. We were going through the Straits of Sicily. The captain suggested we watch from the top deck. I felt like Kate Winslet. Husband behind me at the helm – well you get my drift. It was then, just as stars sparkled down; the boat tilted Port 45 degrees. Seriously. Chairs flew. Everyone screamed. I screamed the loudest! My husband, deafened by my roar, held his nerve and me, and said to stop fretting. The ship righted itself. Thinking it was all over, heart calming, the ship started to list starboard. Kate Winslet screamed for Leonardo. Then we righted again. All over. Back inside, breathing back to normal although there was a lot of damage, thankfully no one was hurt. My husband has started taking out plenty of insurance!

Author bio:

There is one thing that Lynn Griffin loves more than writing and research and that is her family. She also loves a good cup of tea and oh so tasty British strawberries! She also likes the occasional glass of fizz. She has always written around her full-time paid job, ‘after all with a growing family the bills had to be paid somehow.’

Lynn has worked a wide range of jobs, from school kitchens, cleaning, bar work, secretarial, social worker, to Lecturer.

‘I was always considered the class dunce and believed it. No-one has the right to make you feel bad. I believe it’s the choices you make in life that makes the difference. It’s never too late to learn, change or grab that opportunity. If I can do it, then so can you.’

In 2020 she planned to ‘trek’ the world when the big bad invisible wolf reared its ugly head. So she submitted her debut Secrets, Shame, and a Shoebox, which was released worldwide in 2021 and speaks for itself. The sequel, The Twenty-One-Year Contract will be released worldwide late Spring 2022. Both books are standalone, but if you love Harriet, she will pop up in the Sequel.

“The rumor flying around Chevalier is that you tried to blackmail Viane. I know you’re a little crazy.” Arielle winked. “But not that nuts.”

“Actually, I did.”

Arielle’s eyebrows shot up. “Seriously?”

“Seriously. I hoped if I could get hush money from her it would be tantamount to an admission of guilt, something I could take to the gendarmes.”

“That’s brilliant. So, now the whole town thinks you pushed her down the stairs because she refused to pay you.”

“They’re wrong. I didn’t push her. I kicked her.”

“Brittany Ann Thornton, where are your manners?”

Britt allowed herself a small smirk of satisfaction. “It’s okay. She pushed me first. After she drugged me with heroin and hit me with a ginormous frying pan. Then she was going to finish me off with a syringe full of nicotine.”

What to expect in the future:

I’m working on my third novel, Murder Richly Deserved. The story came to me out of nowhere. One morning I woke up and the basic plot was right there in my head, waiting for me to start writing it down. The main character told me her name was Chloe Eugenie Duval, and in her own distinctive voice, introduced me to HonorĂ© St. Lazarre, the enigma who is both her lover and her rival. It’s set in my favorite city, Paris, France, and is a great reason to hop on a plane and do a little more research.

I also write the galley column for Pacific Yachting Magazine. It includes a short personal essay and a recipe suitable for on-board cooking. And I’ve recently begun writing for the Wild Orca website, which is devoted to the endangered orcas in the Pacific Northwest. I’m hoping to see some of my work soon at https://www.wildorca.org.

Recently, I ran into an old boyfriend “You’re looking good,” he said, pulling me in for a hug.

I started to smile and say “thanks.”

“… for an old broad.”

Ah, well, being an old broad isn’t all that bad. Instead of rushing off to work each morning, I take my coffee out to my flower garden and plot.

Right now, I’m working on my third novel. Chloe Eugenie Duval finances her Paris apartment and extravagant lifestyle by picking up diamonds and other baubles left lying around by careless owners. I won’t be surprised if a body turns up soon.

When not writing, I’m trying to help save the endangered Pacific Northwest killer whales. And I cook, clean, garden, do yoga, text my grandchildren, update my website, phone my aunts, teach my husband how to make pie crust, and make sure I have clean underwear. My life is rich and full.

To quote essayist John Burroughs, “I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, and all the friends I want to see.”

Upcoming Release from Cara Bertoia: CASINO QUEEN

Today's guest is Cara Bertoia and she's going to tell us a fascinating story about working in the casino industry for two decades. Since they always tell you to write what you know, Cara has taken that experience into the writing of her upcoming release, CASINO QUEEN. The book releases on March 16, 2022 and is available now for pre-order. Welcome Cara!

I worked in the casino industry for a long time. As a child watching Ocean’s Eleven, they seemed so grown up and glamourous. They were open 24 hours, which made them seem so alive. I was never lonely working in the casino. I always made good money and got to travel the world. To get my first job I drove across country from North Carolina to Nevada. The first casino I saw was the Cal Neva casino on the beautiful shores of Lake Tahoe. Dealing there allowed me to look out at a panoramic view of the lake. I lived in America’s all year playground for three years. I was young, single and worked nights, so I could go to the lake or ski during the day.

I later worked for Princess Cruises traveling the world as a croupier. I met my Scottish husband on the Star Princess, and when we left ships, we moved to Palm Springs. My point is not every casino is in a beautiful place, but you can find one in a beautiful place if you want to.

My husband and I moved to Palm Springs the same week a Native American casino opened downtown. Thousands of people from all over the world were flocking to the desert to work at the casinos. Tribes all over California were claiming their sovereignty. The casino we went to work at snuck in slot machines, defying the federal government. Until Proposition 5 passed, legalizing tribal gaming, we were scared of being shut down. But the best part was that we got to live in Palm Springs, with majestic mountains hovering in the background.

I found the perfect backdrop for my novel in the High Desert of Southern California. A refuge for artists, ex-Marines and desert rats. The sky was always blue, and the rocks at Joshua Tree National Park looked like giant Jenga pieces precariously balanced, ready to fall. We loved hiking in the park, an isolated place near the largest Marine base in the world. The Night Hawk casino near that base became the setting for my novel.

The characters in my book were familiar to me from my two decades working in the casino industry. Fortunately, my boss was the most charismatic tribal chairman in America. People always asked me, “What’s a nice girl like you doing working in a place like this?” Now I can honestly say, “Research.” The characters in my head just kept letting me know how they wanted their story told. All the pieces of the story came together in an organic way to capture that special time and place. It was important to me that my protagonist would be a strong woman running the casino. Because I worked with so many smart, strong, independent women.

What you don’t know reading my novel is that the series was inspired by actual incidents so coincidental that if you put them in a novel, they would sound like a contrivance. We arrived in Palm Springs and got married three weeks later. His roommate from the cruise ships was the best man at our wedding. Dave left his job at our casino and moved to Albuquerque to take a job as a shift manager there. Working there he met Julian and encouraged him to move to Palm Springs for greater opportunities. Even though they switched places they couldn’t avoid their fate. They were both murdered under mysterious circumstances.

The casino industry has been good to me, but I always witnessed an underbelly just perfect for a thriller. Millions of dollars passed through the casino every week, casino fleas operated their personal side businesses on the gaming floor, and you never knew who might walk through the door itching for a fight. My hope is that after reading Casino Queen you will never walk into a casino the same way.

Blurb, Casino Queen:

Caroline Popov, alone, heartbroken, and deeply in debt, ends up in glamorous Palm Springs, California where Native casinos have just opened, offering employment to thousands. She lands a job at the Palm Oasis Casino and is mentored by the charismatic tribal chairman, John Tovar.

Embraced by casino culture, Caroline works her way up to casino manager of the Night Hawk, in the High Desert town of Joshua Tree. There, she is responsible for managing multicultural team members, satisfying the demands of challenging guests, growing revenue while rooting out corruption.

In the process of rediscovering her inner strength, she learns, you have to gamble like your life depends on it. Because it often does.

Excerpt:

“Why did I transfer you up from Palm Springs to be my Casino Queen?” The charismatic Tribal Chairman John Tovar asked.

“Casino Queen, really? Apparently, you are the only person in America who isn’t watching the show about the seven kingdoms on cable. The queens always get killed in the most horrific ways. They are hanged, beheaded, poisoned, burned alive in an explosion, or have their throat slit,” an exasperated Caroline Popov answered.

“I promise that won’t happen to you.” He gestured for her to take a seat at an empty ‘Mystic Mermaid’ slot machine, then sat across from her. They swiveled their chairs to face each other. John tried to act serious, but a smile kept pulling at the corner of his eyes. “According to the Mazurie decision, Native American tribes are considered sovereign nations. Therefore as leader of the tribe, I am King of the Shotowa.”

He continued. “Believe me, when I met the Queen of England I was introduced as the leader of the Shotowa nation. Let me be clear, as soon as you drove into this parking lot you entered the nation.” He gestured toward the uniformed officers standing at the door. “We have our own army.”

She decided to play along with the flow of his logic. “You mean security guards.”

“Precisely, trained courtesy of the United States Marine Corps. The tribe issues its own currency, gaming chips made of ceramic clay, stamped with our logo. At the cashiers’ cage, our central bank, those chips can be exchanged for U.S. dollars. Anyone can find food in our three restaurants or the team member dining room for employees. An underground well supplies us with water. We provide hotel rooms for shelter. Any guest who comes to stay with us will find their basic human needs covered by the Shotowa Tribe. Never forget we are a sovereign nation. I am the King, and I anoint you Queen of the Night Hawk.

Author Bio:

Cara Bertoia grew up in a strait-laced Southern family, but she was always fascinated with casinos. In her twenties on a summer hiatus from teaching in North Carolina, she drove to California and became a dealer at Caesars in Lake Tahoe. She discovered that after teaching high school, handling an unruly gambler was a piece of cake. Her mother highly disapproved of her working in a casino, "a place so bad it has 'sin' in the middle."

Eventually, she succumbed to pressure from the family and returned east to take a high-tech job in Boston. She also began working on her MFA in writing at Emerson. Her goal was to write the first realistic novel about casino life from the perspective of an experienced table games dealer. She is always amazed that normal and sometimes quite intelligent players become absolutely clueless in the casino. They repeat superstitious nonsense and no amount of logic can change their position, maybe her novel will.

While in Boston she was offered the opportunity to join Princess Cruises as a croupier. Jumping at the chance, she spent the next five years circling the globe. Sometimes life exceeds your dreams. She was awed by the wonders of Venice, the fjords of Norway, and the Northern Lights in Leningrad.

Cara returned from ships with a very special souvenir, her Scottish husband Ray. They went to work at the Spa Casino in Palm Springs, and now live in Hollywood, Florida, where she writes about her casino years while wistfully gazing out at the ocean.

LIA

My rubber soles squeak on the polished floor.

Tap.

The unexpected sound stops me.

I cock my head.

Nothing.

The walls must be settling.

I put in my earbuds to listen to music then quickly take them out. If I fuck up while I’m on duty here I’ll

have no income.

The store’s main entrance is past the shoes and cosmetics, the faintly lit mall visible beyond it.

I proceed.

Tap.

Again, I stop, my skin crawling. That sound isn’t coming from the building nor is it a coincidence.

I spin around.

No one’s behind me.

Holding my breath, I wait for something to pounce at me from either side.

Nothing does.

What the fuck?

Shaken and confused, I face front.

Adrian advances.

No, no, no!

“You need to come with me,” he says.

To make my murder easier on him? His jeans, tee, and biker boots show he’s dressed for manual labor...

like digging a grave.

Instinctively, I reach for my gun, which isn’t there. This mall doesn’t want their security guards involved

in shootouts even if they’re cops. Standing down is their preference. My only weapon is my phone.

I pull it out and back away.

He follows. “If you plan to call 911, that’s not a wise choice. Remember, the cops in this area are on

Dimitri’s side not yours.”

Just like him. Together, they could easily subdue me. Once I’m cuffed or hogtied, transporting me to

another location for the final kill would take zero effort.

I shove the phone back in my pocket but keep retreating.

He matches my every step. “Lia, come with me, please. If you don’t want to go into WITSEC, I can take

you somewhere safe.”

Like a fucking grave?

No thanks.

He may be bigger and have a gun but I know this place. He doesn’t.

Using that to my advantage, I back toward the escalators. They’re turned off but still lead away from him.

His gaze jumps from me to them. “There’s no need to run. I can protect you.”

Liar. Bastard.

I don’t stop.

Neither does he.

Junk jewelry displays crowd the area a few feet from the escalators. No one bothers to put that stuff away.

Thieves wouldn’t bother with it.

At last, I stop.

Adrian does, too. “Please say you’re coming with me. I’m begging you.”

I’d rather he was shrieking in agony from a bullet to his dick or gut, but keep that venom from my voice.

“We can talk. That’s it. I’m not promising anything. Got it?”

“Sure.” He gestures behind himself. “Let’s go outside to my car or yours. Whatever you’re comfortable

with.”

I won’t relax until he’s dead. “I have to close up first. There’s a door upstairs I need to lock.” I point to

the upper floor.

He nods. “I’ll go with you.”

“I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Lia, please.”

I feign indecision then nod. “Fine.” Alert and impatient, I wait for him to step closer.

When he’s no more than a foot away but still coming, I push the junk jewelry display in his path.

Unable to stop, he trips over it.

I lift the next display and bring it down hard on his back.

His breath whooshes out. He falls face forward... directly in my path to the mall entrance.

Before I can get around him, he’s pushing to his knees.

Shit. I race up the escalator to leave from the exit I mentioned.

Tap, tap, tap.

He’s steps below me, murder in his eyes, his gun drawn. “You’re going to fucking stop,” he says, “and

you’re going to do it now.”

Target

The Valesky Crime Family Book 1

A Russian kingpin wants her dead... the only one who can stop it is the man sent to murder her.

Toni Flores loved her dream job working for a respected US senator until he raped her. She’s determined to bring him to justice, no matter the cost.

For years, Dimitri Valesky, head of a Russian crime family in America, has bought off those in government. Just like the senator responsible for Toni’s assault. When she won’t keep quiet about it and risks Dimitri’s business, he orders his stepson Michael to kill her.

Michael’s a lobbyist not a mafia enforcer. He refuses the insane demand, but Dimitri insists. The power he holds over Michael and his brothers is absolute... or so he believes.

Rather than murder Toni, Michael intends to romance her. Once he convinces her to keep quiet about the Senator, she won’t be a target any longer and Dimitri will back off on the hit. The plan falls apart and now they are dodging mafia enforcers, bullets, and Dimitri’s outrage.

Michael and Toni fight to stay alive and save those dearest to them as they also fall hopelessly in love.

This is book one in the Valesky Crime Family series and has an HEA.

Two #NewReleases from Stephen B. King, Author of the Deadly Glimpse Series

Stephen B. King joins me again and I'm very happy he's here. This prolific Australian writer has two new offerings in The Deadly Glimpse Series, a novel, The Angel Shot, and a short story, The Dinner Guest. Both came out the same week in November, so Stephen has been incredibly busy! Thanks for stopping by again, Steve!

Glimpse, the Angel Shot

Book 4 in The Deadly Glimpses Series.

Amazon buy link: https://amzn.to/3n70Fif

Blurb:

Seven women have disappeared from bars only to be found murdered after asking for an Angel Shot. Detective Rick McCoy is handed the case after returning from leave following his wife's horrific ordeal at the hands of the serial killer, PPP. Criminal psychologist Patricia Holmes lost her husband to the same killer and when her current partner makes her life miserable she jumps at the chance to work with Rick again. When they determine a man currently jailed for the crimes could not have committed them the mystery deepens.

But that is the least of Rick's worries. An imaginary alter ego appears warning him his wife is suicidal. Will they be able to solve the riddle of the Angel Shot before another victim loses her life and save his wife from taking hers?

Two favorite passages:

“You have been busy, haven’t you? Thanks for interceding on my behalf. The thing is, I’ve been thinking of giving everything up and going back to lecturing. Besides, I won’t work with Pepperdick again, and apparently, all the other sergeants think I’m a liability and won’t partner with me.” She took another drink and looked back out of the window, blinking rapidly.

“Pat, you know as well as I do most cops are a superstitious lot. All you need is one more good investigation, one where you don’t get shot or stabbed, and there would be a long line of guys who would want you as their partner. Do you think if you had another chance, you could get through a whole case and not get wounded or slap your boss?”

She had been swallowing and choked as she laughed at his humor. “Depending who my boss would be, I could try,” she offered when she recovered, then turned her serious gaze on Rick’s.

****

“Yep. So, show me what you’ve got. Let’s say Brandon is not our killer. Have you got enough to profile who is?”

Pat made a pantomime of patting her pockets and looking around her, including under her chair. “What are you doing, Pat?” he asked, though he suspected what her answer would be.

“Oh, I was just looking for my magic wand; I thought I left it lying around here somewhere.”

They both laughed for a moment, and Rick’s heart swelled. They fitted together so perfectly. He shrugged, forcing the feelings down, which he had been doing with Pat for a long time.

“I don’t have much, Rick, but here are some thoughts.” She paused, composing her ideas. “People generally think rape is about having sex, yet we know often it’s not. That is the result, yes, but the cause is more about control, or even to some extent, sadism. Sometimes the rapist cannot achieve orgasm, which makes him more violent, so, we can postulate sex may not be a motivating factor; cruelty is. So, that’s the first point to consider. Second, not only was Ingrid Stapleton brutalized, but then strangled. Strangulation is a very hard, upfront, and personal way of murdering someone. Sometimes we see it in a case of domestic violence, where the killer is angry with someone else to the point of losing control. So, we can draw from that the man was angry with Ingrid, but why? On the face of it, Brandon O’Toole fits that description, he was rejected by her, and that could cause uncontrollable rage, rage enough to strangle, yes, but, in that case, not rape, do you see what I mean?”

Rick nodded slowly. “Yes, I think I do. If we are assuming O’Toole didn’t take Ingrid, then maybe the killer watched her in the bar, perhaps witnessed Ingrid’s altercation with O’Toole, and tried to rescue her. Possibly, he comforted Ingrid after O’Toole left and because he fancied her that could explain the Rohypnol and subsequent sexual assault. But why kill her by strangulation?”

Her brown-eyed gaze bored into his. “Rick, I think we are looking for someone in part with severe issues of anger and hatred toward women, yet in another way, he has a natural desire for them too. He couldn’t let her go because she would identify him. This man could have some sort of dissociative disorder, or dare I say even possible multiple disorder syndrome, and if that’s the case....”

“He’s killed before, or after. Jesus, Pat, you’re saying this could be a serial killer who got away with murder?”

****

Stephen B. King answers a few questions:

Why did you write a Glimpse 4, wasn’t it meant to be a trilogy?

Well, yes, originally this was to be THREE deadly glimpses. I wanted to tell a story of inappropriate workplace desires and the effect on four people during three murder investigations of three different serial killers. I think in the same way good actors like a mini-series to be able to really portray a character, I wanted three books to tell the story with all the nuances two married people would feel who were attracted to each other. I believe I did tell that tale to the best of my ability, but after book 3, Glimpse, The Tender Killer was published, a groundswell of public and reader opinion made itself known by way of emails…..It seemed my readers, including my narrator, and editor wanted to know what happened to my characters next. Quite frankly, I was stunned by the response

I was genuinely flattered, but as a writer, I had ‘moved on’ and had other projects I was working on such as Winter at the Light, and a full re-write of Domin8, yet the calls for more continued. I truthfully never expected that, and was deeply moved that my characters struck such a chord with readers. But, still the ethos of the Glimpse series was to take the reader inside the minds of three separate serial killers and show why they were the they were, so to create a fourth instalment would require another killer, and that wasn’t so easy to do.

I am deeply fascinated by all things psychology, and in particular, what circumstances create the triggers which cause some people’s minds to fracture and create a serial killer. In Glimpse, The Angel Shot I use 3 quotes from one of America’s worst serial murderers, Ted Bundy, to give an indication how these types of people think:

"Murder is not about lust, and it's not about violence. It's about possession."

"We serial killers are your sons; we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow."

"What's one less person on the face of the earth, anyway?"

For me, this is not only some of the most chilling words I have ever read, but deeply, and yes morbidly, interesting. So, for me to create another serial murderer for Patricia Holmes to profile, wasn’t easy, and it took some time to come up with the answer. My wife inadvertently came to my rescue when we were out one night at a social function and she said to me when she returned to the table, “You’ll never guess what is written on the back of the lady’s toilet door.” I looked up and joked, “Jeez, I hope it’s not my phone number advertising for a good time.”

Obviously, she is used to my warped sense of humor, and gave me a withering stare, until I asked her, “No, darling, what is on the back of the door?”

Her answer was like a bolt of lightning hitting me, and my two all-time favorite words came to mind: “What if…”

My loving wife gave me all I needed to create a man so troubled by his dysfunctional marriage he wants to rape and murder vulnerable women when they asked for help to be rescued from a troublesome date.

One thing about me readers may find interesting:

I am fascinated by how the human mind can fracture and have a tremendous respect for psychologists, and psychiatrists who try to help patients put the pieces back together. A good friend, and his wife are both prominent psychologists, and my daughter has degrees in criminal psychology and justice. I often wish I had studied the subject myself, but at that age I was far more interested in rock music, free love, illegal substances, and telling stories. The Glimpse series is named that because in each book I try to offer the reader a look into the killer’s mind set, and offer an answer to the question most people want answering; why.

One thing about Glimpse 4 I think readers will find interesting:

A character named Jolly appears in Glimpse, the Tender Killer as the evil alter-ego of the schizophrenic serial killer, Bobby Cornhill, whom the media nickname, The Biblical Killer, because of the religious quotes written in blood on the victim’s walls. I received a lot of emails from readers demanding not only to bring him back, but asking the question, was Jolly a real entity or just a figment of Cornhill’s very troubled mind. While I loved creating this character, I was stunned that readers wanted more, and in Glimpse, the Angel Shot, Jolly features a lot more. This time one of the main protagonists, Rick McCoy sees, and talks to Jollly. The question again is: Is Jolly real, or is Rick slowly going insane?

Who is Jolly?

I am genuinely staggered by the number of readers who wanted to know more about my character, Jolly. I wanted the reader to wonder, is Jolly real, or just a figment of a very troubled mind? And boy, did they.

I loved Jolly, and felt I was crossing the border into the supernatural, as if I was writing like my more famous namesake. I put a lot of effort into making Jolly feel real to not only the murderer, but make the reader ask that question, is he somehow real and chooses who he appears to?

I had so many requests, when I sat down to write Book 4, The Angel Shot, I knew I had to bring Jolly back, and, I did with a vengeance. The hairs on the back of my neck still tingle when I read about Jolly, and I know what happens next! I hope those readers who wanted to see him again are satisfied, and they can finally decide if he is just imaginary, or somehow, a sentient character who chooses who he will appear to, and influence. How could he appear to Bobby and make him murder liars in an internet chat room, yet confront Rick McCoy and offer a lifeline to save Juliet, his wife? And, then, when Jolly appears to Juliet and offers a way to find solace, and help to keep her sanity, is he helping, or hindering her recovery?

Suffice to say, my beta readers, my editor and narrator, enjoy the juxtaposition that Jolly creates. While Rick worries, he is losing his mind, supposedly, all Jolly wants to do is save his wife’s sanity, and life.

Could such a thing actually happen? As Pat says to Rick when he finally admits to her he is seeing Jolly "We all need help at different times in our lives, sometimes more than others. Often, speaking about what is inside us helps our fears and anxieties dissipate by bringing them into the open and letting you examine them in the cold light of day. I can see Jolly seems real to you, which of course, he would, wouldn't he? If it weren't so real, you'd shrug it off and laugh. A psychosis, no matter how severe, is always real to the person experiencing it. It should never be shrugged off, laughed at, or ignored for that matter. You've been under more stress than anyone should have to bear, I'd be amazed if you didn't come through it without some, shall we say, quirks. It doesn't mean you're mad or need locking up or can't function as you are. But I think the first step for you is to understand why this is happening. Guilt is one of the most powerful motivators there is, and I think once you accept that, work with it instead of trying to fight it, you will see Jolly less and less.

Will Jolly appear in a future story?

Hmm, I am honestly not sure. From my perspective, he is a wonderful, rich character to write for. Intelligent, deep, and he keeps quoting the bible to suit any given situation. So, maybe he will. I’m not saying Jolly is appearing to me, but I sometimes, in the still of the night, hear him whispering to: “Stephen, bring me back…”

I have been asked many times, will there be more Glimpse stories?

During writing Glimpse, The Angel Shot, I believed it was to be a standalone story, and a finale for my characters, Rick, Pat, and Juliet. But, I am frequently reminded of the James Bond quote, “Never say never!”

In fact, there is now a Glimpse 5, called Glimpse, The Dinner Guest, released 13th of November 2020. This is a special project I was invited to submit a story to, and I was humbled to be selected. Me? an ego? Nah, surely not.

The rules seemed simple and interesting enough. 13 authors each publishing a dark thriller, of only 13000 words. It must feature a broken mirror, and use the words, Friday the 13th. I jumped at the chance to make my favorite all time character, Patricia Holmes take a starring role in a scary, stand-alone story, without her protector Rick McCoy to ensure she doesn’t get hurt again.

Here is the blurb:

Detective Sargent and clinical psychologist, Patricia Holmes, has been invited to a murder mystery dinner party at a small luxury hotel located in Western Australia. The dinner is a reunion party for the psychologists and psychiatrists who work at Perth’s largest mental hospital, which treats the criminally insane.

But there is an uninvited guest--a former patient who is hungry for revenge. In fact, he is ravenous. He will stop at nothing until he murders the doctor who gave him painful, electroconvulsive therapy.

Detective Sargent Holmes must stop a frenzied killer on a vicious spree—but can she save the other guests, or will she be the last one left alive?

Here is a short excerpt:

Pat knocked on the door of number ten and hoped she had caught Ruth before she went downstairs to the bar. From inside, she heard a muffled woman’s voice. “Can you get that, Tony,” The next moment, the door was yanked open, and a tall distinguished looking man wearing a tuxedo performed a double take when he saw her.

“Jesus Christ, are you all right?” he said with concern in his voice, and Pat realized the effect her slashed and bloody top had on him.

Pat gave a small laugh, which, when she glanced again at his face, grew louder, and threatened to become hysterical. “I'm fine, thank you. Dress scary, the invite said, so I did. I've got to say; your tuxedo isn't scary at all. I'm Patricia Holmes and would like to have a few words with Ruth, if I can, before festivities get underway.”

He grinned and stepped back, beckoning with his head for her to enter. “Yeah, we don't do fancy dress-ups, sorry. We're far too dull in our old age. Come in. Ruth is applying her make up with a trowel. I'm Tony. I don't think we've met?”

“Thanks, Tony, please call me Pat, everyone does. I left Graylands quite a while ago now, and even when I was there, I was only part-time. I consulted to the criminally insane, the lifers, worst of the worst. By all means, call me morbid. These days, I’m with the police.”

He pointed to the chair by the desk for her to sit then turned his head to the bathroom. “Hon, it's Patricia Holmes. She wants a word with you before we go downstairs. Do you want me to hang around, or can I go down and mingle?”

Ruth Hawthorne stuck her head around the doorway with a lipstick clutched in her right hand. “Hello, Pat, bloody long time no see, how are you doing?” She turned her glance to her husband, “You can leave us girls. We can go down together. Is that all right, Pat? My God, I love your outfit.”

“Thanks, Ruth. I thought I’d have a bit of fun. Going down together works for me. I need a private chat anyway...”

“Sounds ominous. You get off, Tony. Pat joined the dark side and is with the police now, but I don't think she is here to arrest me.”

Pat shook her head and smiled as Ruth disappeared back into the bathroom. Pat sat down on the seat to wait, and Tony acted like most people do around detectives; nervous and in a hurry to get away.

“Righto, see you downstairs. Nice to meet you, Mrs. Holmes.” He scampered out the door quickly, eager to either get away from her, find a strong drink, or both.

My crazy world of irony:

I love some of the ironies and humor, I created in this short story. Pat, who used to consult with murderers attends a murder mystery dinner, dressed as a murder victim and is the only police officer in the remote location to try to stop a murderer kill all the attendees. I found it funny to write that she is the only guest to use fancy dress as the invite instructed her to do. This once happened to me, many moons ago when I dressed up as Count Dracula, but the other fifty or so guests at the party wore ‘normal’ clothes. I felt like an idiot all night, though I did meet a woman who became a playmate for a while...She thought I was interesting.

In Glimpse 4, Patricia was shocked to learn that most of the other detectives in the Major Crime squad don’t want to partner her because she had been badly injured in two previous cases. In Glimpse 5, she must face a man suffering extreme paranoid schizophrenia, intent on ridding the word of as many psychologists as he can, and Pat is a psychologist.

Why a short story in the Glimpse series?

I am reminded of the adage, less is more, and for writers, that means the less you say, the more impact it can have. So, the challenge for me was only writing 13000 words featuring a character I love writing for, when sometimes I could just write, and write and write… Then, before I know it, I’m approaching 100,000 novel limit. When I read through The Dinner Guest, as I have so many times now, I realize just how much I was able to say, with so few words, and I am thrilled with the result. I am tempted to perhaps write a few more short stories, or novellas for Pat, and Rick, in their own anthology. We shall see how Book 5 is received, and if there is a demand from my loyal readers.

Well, as I said earlier, never say never.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog, and the chance to chat about my Glimpse world.

Steve

Interview with Stephen B. King: #NewRelease - DOMIN8

Australian author Stephen B. King writes psychological thrillers, and I was curious about what drew him to this genre and how he got his ideas. As a romance writer, I was also pleased to discover that he includes romantic elements in his books. Stephen was happy shares his thoughts in our interview. Please welcome Stephen B. King!

Blurb, DOMIN8:

After his wife loses interest in him, fifty-year-old Dave Barndon turns to the dark side of the Internet and sex chat rooms. There he finds willing partners who are happy to fulfill his needs with no strings attached. But they aren't the only ones looking to play.

When a woman he had an affair with is murdered he becomes the prime suspect. He thinks his alibi is solid until a second woman is murdered, and then a third. He fights for his freedom and redemption while the body count rises. He must figure out who is framing him and why before the killer str ikes again.

Where did you get the idea for your new novel?

All my other twelve books came to me by way of inspiration, but Domin8 was an idea that gnawed away at me for a long time – years even. The difficulty was the juxtaposition of a mature, successful, happily married man but for one thing: his wife doesn’t want sex anymore. He discovers internet chat rooms after some unusual circumstances. Linking that with a murder/mystery/whodunnit and allowing him to find redemption was a challenge that took a long time to solve.

Why did you choose this genre?

This genre chose me. I’d like to think I can write an effective story in any genre. At school I loved writing challenges, but I am drawn with a morbid fascination toward serial killers and showing why they do what they do.

What was the most difficult thing about writing this book?

Finding a balance. My publisher and editor wanted the project, but my initial submission had too many graphic sex scenes in it (not that I enjoy writing them – far from it). I found it difficult to write about a man who is a self-confessed sex addict discovering a treasure trove of willing submissive women and NOT write sex scenes. For me the story was like an eighties Brian De Palma movie. By that I mean a straight-out thriller with sex, but the publisher struggled to find the right line to place it in. It was too much of a thriller for the erotic, but too many sex scenes for a thriller. It took a lot of rewriting and help from my wonderful editor to find the right balance.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read your book?

Two things. I’d love for them to be entertained first and foremost. Then, if possible, I’d like them to consider their own marriage and ask a couple of questions. 1..Was Dave justified in fooling around when his wife refused to have sex with him for so long? Many men I know in their fifties would say yes. 2..Is cyber-sex as bad as having an affair if there is no physical contact? I listened to a radio chat show about this very subject.

If you could change something about one of your books that’s already released, what would it be?

This book was released earlier and has gone through a major rewrite and I am delighted with the changes made to how this story is told. Four years of working with a brilliant editor has taught me a thing or two. I have three other self-published works, maybe I should check those too?

What was the hardest part about writing the story of an unlikable protagonist? What was the easier part?

Dave is likable, but he does things that most of us think is unlikable. The fact he got away with it so long is testament to the fact that he is such a likable person. He is tall, handsome, self-assured and flirtatious, so women find him attractive. That was the difficult part. I know most of my readers are women and they wouldn’t like what he was doing, so to find balance and help them keep reading was very difficult. The easy part is that I relate to Dave. I’m that age, happily married, work in that industry, and have seen a lot of men and women my age have affairs for the very reasons Dave does. So, I felt I wrote with some authority on what is a very difficult subject – yet hopefully built into it a thrilling, suspenseful whodunnit.

You told me that the editing process for this book represents about a year of work. Why did you decide to revamp and re-edit Domin8 and take it from being self-published to being published by The Wild Rose Press?

Readers have told me, and I passionately believe too, that Domin8 is a story that should be told because there are some life lessons people could learn while being entertained by a gripping, interesting story. Because of its complexity once written, I needed time away from it to get it right. When D8 was first published, I wasn’t happy with it, the editor I used loved the story, but I don’t think she was good enough to handle such a contentious issue. When I picked it up over three years after it was released, I was horrified at the errors. It was like the book was screaming out to me to make it better. I mentioned it to Melanie, my TWRP editor and she asked to read it and said yes it was possible for them to re-release a book, if it was good enough. So, I presented to her my re-written version. Then other editors read it to decide which line it suited so I was able to get lots of fantastic support and direction to make the story as good as I could, The book doesn’t scream at me anymore, it’s content now and I love it. As does everyone I asked to read it during the twelve months it took to edit.

In your serial killer series, you weave in a love story, and you tell me that Domin8 also contains two love stories? Why do you add romantic elements to otherwise dark and gritty stories?

Great question, why do I? I think if you write about the dark side of human nature, there has to be a balance of light and dark. Otherwise it’s too horrible. Plus, the thing I work hardest on is creating characters the reader can invest in. If I can get you to like and care about the characters, and want them to have a happy ending, then hold on tight, we are going for a ride. I think we all deserve a happy ending, but in life, we don’t always get it. Not all of my characters get to keep the love they found; just lie in real life, but I think we all want to feel love and be loved.

What do you like best about your hero in Domin8?

Dave Barndon is a good man, flawed yes, but a good man who makes some poor life choices with catastrophic results. He wants to find redemption, if he can.

What do you like best about your heroine?

Shannon is a no-nonsense woman who has been hurt by her husband who left her for a younger woman, and then Dave Barndon comes into her life. She is attracted to him, but hates what he has been doing, yet she is his nurse and must nurse him back to health after he has been shot.

In looking at all the books you've written, what book for you has been the easiest to write? The hardest? The most fun?

Easiest: Glimpse, memoir of a Serial Killer. Boy the words poured from me, and that’s a worry as half the book is from the killers POV. That book felt like it came through me, not from me – if that makes sense.

Hardest: Without doubt, Domin8, yet this is the book that means most to me in terms of the story I’ve been able to craft.

Most fun: Glimpse, The Tender Killer. So many aspects of that book were such fun to write, my female protagonist Patricia Holmes; my favorite female lead ever. A fabulous schizophrenic killer that  was brilliant to write for. And then there is Jolly; the killers imaginary alter ego, or, is he imaginary?

What’s one thing that your readers would be surprised to learn about you?

I left school at age fifteen to follow my love of rock music, and girls. Yet I have won two literary awards for my book Thirty-Three Days – that proves anyone can follow their dream.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

I manage a large Kia Dealership and worked in the motor trade for many years. I meet so many people I get lots of ideas for creating characters.

Name one person, book, or song who/that inspires flights of fantasy.

Leonard Cohen wrote a song called Nevermind, which was used in one of the True Detective series. The words in that song reached inside my soul and grabbed a firm hold. In particular, one line: ‘I live among you well disguised.’ That line inspired my first book, Forever Night which was picked up by a publisher on my first attempt and started this journey

If you could get rid of something in your life that would give you more writing time, what would it be?

My full time job. I have a saying: I work for a living and write for a passion. I’d love to be able to write for a living; that would be Utopia.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

We have a rescue dog, named Snowy, a West Highland Terrier. When our children moved out of home there was a huge hole in our lives and Snowy filled it. He is so attached to my wife they are like Siamese twins; it’s a beautiful thing to see them together.

Name two authors we might find you reading when taking a break from your own writing.

Michael Robotham and Val McDermid. Both write about criminal psychologists who are flawed and I love their books

Do you have any words of advice to beginning writers?

I do; two things. Firstly, never give up. The more you write the better you get at the craft, and Domin8 is proof positive of that. Secondly, write from your heart, and edit, edit, edit with your head.

How can readers reach you or find you online?

Tell us a little about your current work in progress.

I’m in editing rounds with Winter at the Light, a romantic thriller set in 1952 on a remote lighthouse when 19-year-old Molly agrees to look after it for her father when he is injured. Unfortunately, she discovers, there is nowhere to hide on a Lighthouse. I’m also about 75000 words into Glimpse 4, called Glimpse, The Angel Shot. I thought I was done with Glimpse as a trilogy, however readers wanted more, in particular to know what happened next to my protagonists. That was so flattering I started thinking about where they both would be three months after G3 ended….

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

Well if you enjoyed a more romantic thriller, I’d begin with Thirty-Three Days, about 68-year-old Jenny whose consciousness has come back in time to her thirty-five-year-old body to save the world from an all-consuming blight. In the past she falls in love for the first time in her life, but she can only stay for thirty-three days. However, if your taste is for more psychological thrillers, Domin8 is a good place to start, or my darkest, is Glimpse, Memoir of a Serial Killer.

Do you have an event coming up you’d like to tell us about?

Domin8 is released on April 13th and I can’t wait to see what readers think.

Tell us about your next release.

Here is the (unofficial) blurb for Winter at the Light which should be released in three to four months:

In 1952, 19-year-old Molly agrees to run the Forbes Reef Lighthouse for her father who has broken his leg. She leaves the city and her nursing career behind, dreading three months of loneliness, trapped on a remote island. Once into her routine, Molly discovers she enjoys the solitude, the radio check-ins with the mainland, fishing from the jetty, and the joy of reading. When a massive storm arrives bringing a life raft, Molly risks her life to save the unconscious man inside. On waking he says he has lost his memory but as Molly nurses him back to health she wonders if he has. When the storm finally clears, Molly has fallen for the mystery man, but still has doubts about his honesty. A boat arrives with two men to kill him and anyone else who can identify them. Molly quickly learns there is nowhere to hide on a lighthouse.
