#NewRelease: YE GODS! THE LAW IS AN ASS by Seelie Kay

It's release day for Seelie Kay's vampire romantic suspense YE GODS! THE LAW IS AN ASS. I wish you much success, Seelie!

An Interview with Seelie Kay:

Q.  Why do you write romance?

Because I am fascinated by the games people play to find and secure a lasting relationship, which is not always love. There’s the chase, the courtship, the falling, the surrender. That’s what I try to capture in my stories.

Q.  Do you prefer a certain type of romantic hero?

I adore smart, dashing gentlemen who aren’t afraid to live on the edge. They can be a bad boy, a billionaire, a prince, or a secret agent. That hint of danger just hooks me! However, they have to be paired with strong, independent women who aren’t afraid to fight for what they want, even love.

Q.  Why did you write “Ye Gods! The Law is an Ass?”

Donovan Trait is a vampire lawyer. In the human world, a very respected lawyer. I wanted to give him the opportunity to shine in the vampire world. So I created a scenario where his turned vampire bride Shirley is unfairly punished for an unintentionally violating their marital agreement, as well as other outdated, outrageous, and outright discriminatory laws. To survive and protect their unborn child, they must not only fight back, but also rebel. In this instance, human history provides them with the path. That gave me the opportunity to draw parallels between the fight for human rights and the rights of vampires who aren’t purebloods. It also allowed me to poke at the continued need of both societies to embrace social change. Perhaps surprisingly, the vampires lag far behind the humans in terms of equality and individual freedoms. However, in the end, the message is clear: Whether human or vampire, an individual is entitled to certain rights and liberties. And no human or vampire has a right to deny them.

Blurb:

It was the Great Lie, and it could destroy the Vampire Nation.

In First, We Kill All the Lawyers, vampire lawyer Donovan Trait survived repeated attacks by a serial killer. Now, after violating a marital agreement with the Vampire Coalition, and several ancient Vampire Laws, Donovan, and his newly-turned vampire bride are on the run. You see, in exchange for permitting a pure-blood vampire to marry a turned human, the Traits agreed to allow vampire scientists to monitor the conception and birth of their children. When Judge Shirley Magnusen Trait turns up accidentally pregnant on her wedding day, the fury of the Coalition is unleashed. The tribunal recommends unacceptable punitive action and the Traits are forced to flee to a mysterious island of vampire nuns. The Traits are, by profession, seekers of the truth. But this time, the truth may not set them free. In fact, it could start a revolution. Will the Traits escape the clutches of the Coalition and keep their babies safe? Or will their family be…eliminated?

Excerpt:

Jonathan opened the envelope and reviewed the report. When he got to the last page, his eyes grew wide. “Donovan, it seems Shirley had a reason for that lightheadedness.”

Donovan gasped. “What is it?”

His father handed him the document and pointed at the bottom of the page. “She’s pregnant.”

Donovan grabbed at the wall. Overwhelmed with unfamiliar emotion, he settled onto a chair and rested his head in his hands. “Ye Gods,” he muttered. “I’m going to be a father.”

“And I am to be a grandfather, finally. However, I am afraid the Coalition may have a problem with this. They may not permit your marriage today or anytime soon.”

Donovan Trait turned to his father, his eyes filled with fury. “Why does it matter? We’re already married in the human world and we are about to repeat our vows before all in the Vampire Kingdom. This doesn’t change anything. It’s not like we are going to have a child out of wedlock. We have broken no laws.”

Jonathan Trait arched a fluffy white brow. “We need to discuss this, son.” He sat beside him. “The problem is, you explicitly agreed to allow the Coalition to oversee the conception and birth of any children born of this joining. Every step of the process was to be observed, studied, and documented. You know this.”

“So, they are going to force us to terminate the pregnancy and start over?” Donovan groaned. “It’s too late. I will not force her to start over. They can be voyeurs the next time. I am sure Shirley will have no problem with the monitoring of her pregnancy. It’s not like she can consult with a human physician. They would not understand that her child may have fangs in utero. And the blood work…” He shuddered. “I can’t imagine what…”

Jonathan frowned. “The agreement says from the point of conception, son.  You know what sticklers they are. Our women became barren more than a century ago. We need to understand why. From a scientific perspective, we need to know exactly what was different, so we can find a solution.”

Donovan harrumphed. “Seriously? Did they wish to observe while I made love to my wife? That’s ludicrous. Horny old bastards.”

Jonathan chuckled. “Some of those old fuddie-duddies would stroke out if forced to watch a virile man like you seduce his wife.” His expression turned somber. “Let’s look at the facts as we know them. As a lawyer, that’s a process with which you are familiar.

“Human women can’t carry a vampire child to term. We know that. They miscarry. The human uterus is simply not strong enough to withstand the damage caused by a developing vampire fetus. Those fangs shred the amniotic sac. However, we also don’t know if a female vampire can carry a human baby to term. Shirley may not be able to provide the fetus with the nutrition that it needs to develop properly.

“In addition, we don’t know the point of conception, which means we don’t know if Shirley was fully turned when she conceived. We also don’t know what the genetic makeup of the baby will be and whether that will change as the pregnancy progresses. Furthermore, we don’t know whether the baby’s genetics will alter after birth. We don’t know what the child will need to survive. We don’t know much.

“That raises several questions, Donovan. Is Shirley’s life in danger? And is your child’s life in danger? Not just physically and genetically, but socially. The baby is an anomaly. To some, an adnomination. A freak. He or she will constantly be in danger. If you had kept to the agreement, she and the baby would have been protected. Now everything is at risk.”

Interview with Zachariah from BLOODBOND by Sydney Winward

Sydney Winward makes a return visit to talk about BLOODBOND, the second book in the Bloodborn series. (Sydney visited last December with a look at BLOODBORN, the first book in the series) I'm intrigued by the idea of a vampire who will not kill. Very unlike a vampire! Enjoy the interview with Zachariah, this most unusual vampire hero. Thanks for being here today, Sydney!

Interviewer: Thanks for joining us today, Zachariah! Let’s get to know you a little better. Do you have any siblings? If you do, what are/were they like?

Zachariah: Adam, my older brother, and I could not be any more different. When our small village held dances beneath a new moon, he would either brood or paint in the corner while I danced every dance. It’s not easy getting him to smile, but even during hard times, I find things to smile about.

Interviewer: I’ve heard of the fierce blood hunter. I can’t imagine much would get him to smile. Where do you live now, and with whom?

Zachariah: When I came out of my feral state, Adam asked me to come live with him and Willow in the country. But living with a newly wedded couple would be awkward. Especially with my enhanced vampire hearing. Didn’t want to be around that, to be sure. I decided to stay with Dracula in Ichor Knell. After being locked underground for ten years, I wanted to be among my own kind for a change.

Interviewer: Do you work in Ichor Knell? What is your occupation?

Zachariah: I only recently started apprenticing with physicians Enache and Rosetti in the palace infirmary. I am both intrigued and nauseated by the fact that very little can kill a vampire.

Interviewer: Dare I even ask what you are referring to? So you live with Dracula, yet you work as a physician. To which social class do you belong?

Zachariah: As Dracula’s kin, I am awarded certain privileges in elite vampire society. But instead of taking advantage of my position in society, I prefer to earn my own way. If I have to start at the bottom as an apprentice, then I would gladly do it.

Interviewer: A worthy and honest goal! On that note, are there occasions when you lie?

Zachariah: I can’t lie to save my life! There hasn’t been a time when I haven’t gotten caught in a lie.

Interviewer: Do you have any annoying habits, quirks, strange mannerisms, or other defining characteristics?

Zachariah: I am often self-conscious about the fact that I have never killed a human before, which is strange for a vampire. Especially for a vampire that used to be feral. I call myself a scavenger. When I hunt for my food, I make sure the human is already dead before I feed on their cold, stale blood. It’s not entirely satisfying, but it gets the job done. I refuse to kill others just so I can survive.

Interviewer: That is definitely strange for a vampire, especially considering how long you were feral and locked underground. I’m curious about how much schooling you’ve had if you were locked away for half your life?

Zachariah: Very little. I grew up in a small, pastoral village, and what little I learned, I learned from my mother. I am very embarrassed that I don’t know how to read, but my new tutor, Laurel Covaci, says I’m making good progress.

Interviewer: What did you want to be when you grew up?

Zachariah: Definitely a soldier. I wanted to serve in the emperor’s army and make something of myself. Unfortunately, I have found that I don’t have the stomach for killing. I would have made an awful soldier.

Interviewer: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you so far?

Zachariah: I painstakingly pressed flowers in a book and gave them to Laurel Covaci. She dumped the entire basket out the window in front of not only a group of nobles, but Dracula as well! My face burns every time I remember the incident.

Interviewer: Speaking of burning faces… When did you have your first kiss, and who with?

Zachariah: Margaret Hurst during the new moon dance back home. It was only days before our village was attacked by vampires and every last person beside me and my brother was killed.

Interviewer: That’s awful. You two are fortunate to have survived. Last question. Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love?

Zachariah: The moment I laid eyes on Laurel for the first time, I fell headfirst into love. I believe she’s my soul mate. It’s a shame she doesn’t feel the same way.

Interviewer: That is a shame! I bet you will catch her eye yet. Don’t give up. And that’s it! Thanks for joining us today, Zach. It’s been a pleasure.

Blurb:

Zachariah Degore spent ten years locked under ground as a feral vampire. Now he has to redefine what it means to be healthy and whole. With his human life behind him, he starts anew in the vampire city of Ichor Knell with the vampire shah as his kin. He must prove he is worthy of his place in this new world.

Laurel Covaci is vampire elite, she would never court a feral vampire. After two hundred years she has yet to find a mate who meets with her satisfaction. She hides the pain of past hurt and abandonment behind a cold façade. Zach is confident that Laurel is the vampire for him, but can he break through her icy walls and convince her he's the mate she's been waiting for?

Excerpt:

She stared at him. And stared. Until it became uncomfortable.

So he stood and started to pack up his things, but she glared at him and pointed to his seat.

“Sit.” He did. Who could disobey a tone like that? “You can’t kill?” she asked incredulously. “You only recently came out of being feral, correct?” He nodded. “And you can’t kill? Human blood doesn’t send you into a rage. You refused to drink from the goblet at the service.”

“Have you been spying on me?”

She ignored his comment, and her mouth puckered slightly as if in deep concentration. He couldn’t help but stare. He’d never seen her do it before. Another endearing quality he added to the lengthy list of what made Laurel Covaci absolutely perfect.

“I have searched high and low, but I simply cannot find any answers to this particular conundrum,” she finally said. Heat rose to his ears. She’d been thinking about him?

He grinned. “Well, well, Lady Covaci. I didn’t realize I was filling up your thoughts.”

She blushed prettily, and he almost expected her to get up from the table and leave, regretting she even sat down in the first place. But she stayed put. In fact, she stared right back as if challenging him. He enjoyed the eye contact. Her eyes were so blue. So beautiful. They took him back to green fields of his childhood, of staring back at the blue sky as clouds lazily drifted past.

BLOODBORN, #NewRelease from Sydney Winward

Sydney Winward makes her first appearance today at Journeys with Jana and I'm thrilled to have her. Her paranormal romance, BLOODBORN, sounds like the perfect conflict; a vampire who falls in love with a vampire hunter. Welcome Sydney!

5 Things Adam Degore Can’t Live Without

1. A weapon. Doesn’t matter what kind. Sword, dagger, nails. Heck, he could probably even kill someone with a twig if he was determined enough.

2. A second weapon. In case the first weapon doesn’t work. But of course, he’d need to conceal this one. In his boot. Beneath his armor. Maybe even inside his glove. You can never be too careful.

3. His horse. Doesn’t have a name. Doesn’t need one. The blood hunter brand on the creature’s shoulder speaks for itself. If you steal his horse, he will hunt you down.

4. Several reliable herbs. Violet brittlebrush to knock a man out. Wolfsbane to stop lycanthropy just in case. Perhaps even a few healing herbs. Being a blood hunter is dangerous work after all.

5. His brother. Everything he has done up until this point has been for his brother. Becoming a blood hunter. Dedicating his life to hunting dark creatures. If only saving him was within his own reach.

Blurb, BLOODBORN:

Adam Degore's personal need to find a cure for vampirism drives him to ensnare a vampire, but the creature he captures is Dracula's daughter. Worse yet, he's drawn to her—a monster he's vowed to kill.

Despite her father's wishes, Willow chooses to live among humans instead of the vampire conclave where she would be safe. She wants a life filled with more than shadows. Being captured by a human, not to mention falling in love with one, is not part of her plan.

With vampires and blood hunters closing in on their chosen prey, Adam and Willow need to trust one another. But will that trust come in time for them to survive and find a future together?

Excerpt:

“How could you?” she gasped, taking another step backward, but to back up much further would result in falling over the edge of the cliff and into the holy waters below. However, he was blocking her escape, a menacing sword close to penetrating her skin. Any false move would result in an iron sword through her heart. “How could you take me here?”

“I couldn’t tell you,” he answered, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s the only way. It’s the last thing I could do. For Zachariah.”

She felt numb. After everything that had happened between them, he still meant to kill her? But he was her mate. Mates were supposed to look after one another.

“Don’t do this,” she whispered, taking yet another step backward but stopping in her tracks when the roaring of the falls crashed into her ears like the loud toll of a bell signaling a vampire getting burned at the stake.

She would meet the same fate, except the only audience she would have was Adam and it was holy water instead of fire. She didn’t know which was worse. “I care for you, Adam. I want you to give me a chance.”

“I don’t have a choice. I need my brother back. He’s the only family I have left.”

SINNER'S OPERA and a horse named Bonito

Linda Nightingale joins me today to talk about her love for a horse named Bonito and about her newest book from The Wild Rose Press, SINNER'S OPERA. Take it away, Linda!

Sinners’ Opera is my latest book from The Wild Rose Press and is now available. In SO, the hero, Morgan D’Arcy, owns an Andalusian stallion kept at his ancestral estate in Devon, Royal Oak. As you might have guessed, Morgan is an English lord. Also, he is a concert pianist…and a vampire.

I’d like to tell  you about my experience with the magnificent Andalusian horse. I know Morgan would approve since he dearly loves his stallion and mentions him often in Sinners’ Opera. So...

In 1980, the year my oldest son was born, I discovered the Andalusian horse. Like a poster on my wall says, ‘this horse will change your life’.  We were breeding the Arabian at the time had garnered some success in the show ring.  But when I saw the magnificent Andalusian horses, I fell in love and immediately started liquidating my Arab breeding stock to purchase an Andy stallion.

If I were playing the piano with my first lesson, I’d try to sit down and play Liszt. As usual, I bought a young horse who knew more than I did. I looked all over the country for a THE horse I wanted.  I planned for him to be high-schooled (the Andalusian is gifted for the baroque moves—passage, piaffe, lateral work and pirouette, and the airs-above the ground).  I received a call from a breeder in Virginia saying that I needed to come see a  young stallion named Bonito.  I didn’t want him because he was young and unfinished, but he did have a lot of the moves on him at 4 (a mistake I later learned).

But I went to beautiful Middleburg, Virginia to look at Bonito.  In the indoor arena, I fell in love with a white fairytale stallion named Afamado, but he wasn’t for sale.  Then they showed me Bonito. He put his head over the Dutch door, taking my heart with one glance.  He was a rose-gray with a black mane and tail, both thick and long.  His neck was a majestic crest like a carousel horse.  I bought Bonito and never looked back.

Bonito and Holly
Bonito had been imported from Costa Rica.  My hubby and I later went to the National shows in CR and were treated like queens and kings. I also began to broker horses for Bonito’s breeder in this country.

We bred Bonito to mares of various breeds, and consistently he produced offspring of his quality. The Andalusian is gentle enough to breed the stallions in the morning and put him in the show ring that afternoon, without requiring a professional trainer to behave with other horses.  He was mischievous and a bit of a handful but always kind.  We entered the show ring with a vengeance. At the time, the Andalusian was a rare breed in this country and we wowed the crowd everywhere we went.  I did exhibitions in the long lines, parades in the long lines (you have a line each side of the horse and walk very close behind him).  His beauty and agility won him many admirers as well as his sweet temperament.  I could put a child on him and he was a plow horse,  but let me put a foot in the stirrup and he was all fire and show.  He knew he had a fan club.

I showed him at two National Championships in Halter and many championships in various classes.  I then began to show dressage and perform musical freestyles, but our best luck was in performing exhibitions at horse shows.  We had a routine to Phantom of the Opera, and I wish I had that on tape, but sadly I can’t find the old VHS to transfer it to disk.

When I was going through my divorce, I’d go to the barn and cry on his neck.  He’d fold that lovely neck around me and hug me while I cried.  I daresay he was my soul mate.

Bonito changed my life.

If you’d like to know more about the Andalusian or the high school movements, leave a comment with a way to contact you, and I’ll be glad to send you an article I wrote for a breed magazine and info on the upper level movements.

Everyone who met Bonito loved him.  Even today, twenty years later people remember him.

Sinners’ Opera Blurb:

Morgan D'Arcy is an English lord, a classical pianist, and a vampire. He has everything except what he desires most—Isabeau. As the Angel Gabriel he's steered her life and career choice, preparing her to become Lady D'Arcy.

Many forces oppose Morgan's daring plan—not the least of which is Vampyre law. Isabeau Gervase is a brilliant geneticist. Though she no longer believes in angels, she sees a ticket to a Nobel Prize in Gabriel's secrets—secrets that have led her to a startling conclusion. Gabriel isn't human, and she fully intends to identify the species she named the Angel Genome. Morgan is ready to come back into Isabeau's life, but this time as a man, not an angel. Will he outsmart his enemies, protect his beloved and escape death himself? For the first time in eternity, the clock is ticking.

Excerpt:

“Are you a bum?”  She cocked her head, one eyebrow arched.

“Do I look like a bum?”  I’d dreamed of changing the world.  How the Mighty fall.

“Well, yeah.”  She stressed the last word.

A bitter laugh burned my throat.  “Hold on to your dreams.  Dreams do come true.”  My hand shook, and I almost dropped the wallet engraved with my initials and the St. Averil crest—worthless reminders of a life left behind.

“Come closer.  I won’t harm you.  I promise.”  I folded the sodden currency and shoved it into her hand.

She gasped.  “Is this real money?”  Her eyes narrowed.  “Oh, my, it is.  A lot of money.”  An accusing gaze captured mine.  “Did you rob a bank?”

“The money is mine.  Now it’s yours.”  Thinking of a special little girl I’d taught to dream, I smiled wistfully.  “I must warn you.  Princes are in short supply.”

“You are an angel,” she whispered reverently.  “Grandma said angels didn’t always look like angels when they appeared to you.”

A sharp pain lanced my heart, sadness welling deep inside.  “I’m not an angel, child.  Run along home before you catch a chill.”

RA Winter and a TWISTED paranormal romance!

I have a unique paranormal romance for you today. RA Winter is the author of TWISTED: A Vampire Werewolf Freaky Friday. I'm intrigued by the premise. She also sat down for an interview with me. Welcome RA!

Interview:

Where did you get the idea for this novel?

One of the Freaky-Friday movies was showing on the TV about two young girls who body-switched, and I looked over at my man and I was like, what would you do if you were switched with me?  (Answer deleted.  We don't talk about the rest of the night. It's not PG 13.)  My first thoughts were- yeah, that one.  I mean come on-  who could resist?

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book you’d like to share?

Twisted has been given a PG 13 by a review site.  Honestly, I wouldn't want my 13 year old reading this, however, I would have eaten it up at her age. It's adult humor. I mean come on, a female vamp is in a male werewolf's body, what's she going to do?

What was the most difficult thing about writing this book?

Pronouns.  Twisted went through about six complete rounds of beta readers.  Also, I had to hold back on my humor.  I went down a raunchy hole, had a lot of fun, then my editor dug me out.  Thanks, KC Freeman.  She saved me.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read your book?

I didn't set out to have a message besides that we can all get along, no matter what our ideas are of someone else, we need to put ourselves into their  boots before we can understand them.  Overcoming prejudice by understanding your enemy acts as the primary theme.

How many books do you have under the proverbial bed? Will they ever see the light of day?

I have six pieces that will (should) be part of the Spirit Key Series, at some point I'll get back to those.  It's about a Native American family and the ancient spirits that surround them, begging for a voice, and romance of course.  Then there is a sequel to Twisted, a three part series about Death Takers falling in love, (book 1 is finished, I'm just waiting for book 2 to be done before I start publishing, it's a three-part series).

Tell us a bit about you. Where do you live, and how long have you been writing?

I live in Pittsburgh right now.  I've lived all over the world, Turkey, Germany, Egypt, Jordan and tons of states in the US.  I love to travel but hate to fly!  I started writing genealogy reference books under my married name but wanted more romance in my life.

If writing is your first passion, what is your second?

Finding answers to where I came from.  Genealogy!  There is a lot of lore in my family, some I doubt is true, some I've proven true, and a couple of really wonderful rogue characters who have kept me interested in history.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

Ok, so-- I've been a Federal Agent, I won't tell you what agency, but let's just say that it's interesting.

If you could get rid of something in your life that would give you more writing time, what would it be?

Downsize my home!  I spend way too much time organizing and cleaning the same stuff everyday.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish?

I am a pet person.  I love everything.  Seriously.  Dogs, cats, bunnies, I'd live at a zoo if I could.

What did you want to be (occupation-wise) when you were a child?

Archaeologist!  I love history.

Twisted: A Vampire Werewolf Freaky Friday
Blurb:

A curse has plagued the land of the witch and the only clue to save the world is in the form of a riddle. For centuries Tabitha has failed to release the death that has overtaken her world. Now, the vamps are mostly female, the werewolves are male. The witch must erase the curse before the land dies, but how can she convince these two warring species to work together before all is lost?

One last chance is dropped at her doorstep when a young vampire falls into her clutches. Darkness descends over their world as the witch comes up with one last scheme to save them all. Switch their bodies.

It's the only way to make them work together, but will the two chosen ones tear each other apart, or save their world from death?

A Freaky-Friday romance.

Excerpt:

Koane’s body collided back together in sharp painful pieces. Around him, snow littered the ground and the wind picked up, waving the trees. Adjusting his position, his vision sharpened in the night.

Oddly, he saw better than before but different. The birds throbbed red as if the only thing that mattered was its heart and the blood that pulsed through it.

He sniffed the air. The air told him nothing as if the wolf ignored him. Inside darkness covered where the beast lived.

The witch had taken his wolf! Emptiness as if a deep void had been stuffed down his throat.

A heavy coat floated to the ground. The vampire's. Red leather with a thick furry lining. He reached for it and stopped.

Long thin tapered fingers wiggled as he commanded them. Red nail polish too? He flexed them just to make sure. Rolling over, he noticed a few other things.

Im-freaking-possible.

Smaller hands ran over the swell of breasts and down between shapely legs hidden beneath the folds of a black gown. No bulge, not even a slight swell under those hands. Koane squeezed everywhere searching for something familiar between those thighs. He gave up and bit the hand. A yelp burst from his lips as a high squeak.

Throbbing beats pierced his eardrums. The emotions of animals entered his mind. Food. Flee. Fight.

“Tabitha!” His yell echoed over high mountains with a distinctive female edge.  The vampire’s voice. No freaking way. Castrated and replaced with lady bits. Curves and swells that he’d only dreamed of touching were now within his reach. Emptiness settled between his legs and he’d do anything to get his dick back.

A man without a penis couldn't be an alpha male.

His surroundings told him one thing. He was in the overlands. A place where no one travels. Where the creatures held no honor and ate anything, even the pregnant.

“Shut up. Do you want everything to know we’re here?” That was his voice, but he hadn’t said it.

The bushes rustled. Snow dropped off dark satin as his own body trudged through the snow still encased in that horrible frivolous tux. He could smell the wolf under the skin and bared his teeth.

Switched! He changed his mind. He’d kill the witch himself. Eat her too.

“Vamp?”

“Ophelia.”

Canines popped out of his mouth and a deep hunger bit inside. A throaty growl burst from his lips.

“Put a lid on it,” Ophelia snapped in his own freaking voice. His own body walked over, swaying hips like a pup in heat, and put a boot up on a log. The coat fluttered in the wind. “Hi-ya, partner.”

Koane growled, but a hiss came out of his mouth, crawling like spiders over his thoughts. “I will not work with a vampire!”

It laughed. “Well, you’re not, now are you? Apparently, Tabitha found a way around that.”

“What are you talking about?”

Ophelia ran a finger over stubby hands. His hands. “We said that we wouldn’t work with each other. We’re not. We’re working with ourselves. And unless you know someone more powerful than the witch who can switch us back, we’re stuck with no way out but to solve this riddle.”

Review - #NewRelease BEAST OF ALL by J.C. McKenzie

Here's something a rarely do. Review a book on Journeys with Jana. But I'd like to make an exception in this case. I had the opportunity to beta read fellow Wild Rose Press author J.C. McKenzie's fifth and final book in her Carus series, BEAST OF ALL, and I just finished reading the final product. And I'm really glad I did!

I've read J.C.'s non-Carus books and enjoyed them, so I knew I'd like this one as well. While I love romance novels, romance involving shifters, demons, and vampires is usually not my thing. But J.C. McKenzie has crafted a story that I was drawn into from the beginning. I loved the witty, snarky dialogue of Andy, the heroine, and I loved her kick-ass attitude. She moves from vulnerability, weakness, and grief to healing, strength and acceptance of her shifter gifts, making her a character I could really root for. I cheered for her all the way, especially when she realized she’s always loved Wick and wanted to be his mate. And Wick was definitely a swoon-worthy hero! BEAST OF ALL has emotion, compelling characters, and fast-paced action, and is a fitting finale to the Carus series. A great read!

Here's the blurb:

“Two months ago my world collapsed and the beast reigned.
Seven weeks ago the SRD captured me.
Nine days ago, they injected me with something vile.
Today, I break free.
And tomorrow?
I’ll make them pay.”

Badass Shifter Andy McNeilly wakes up from a horrible nightmare, only to discover it wasn’t a dream, and she’s no longer quite so badass. Chemically curbed, Andy has lost touch with her feras and beast when she needs them most. Can she regain control of her supernatural abilities in time to reap retribution from her enemies, or will she fall as fodder in a power play for control of Vancouver’s seedy underworld?

Excerpt:

No feras. No beast. Whatever they shot me with blocked my communication with the animals. Did it prevent shifting as well? I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to call a form and change. Only a headache answered. Dread flittered across my skin. Was this permanent?

As the Carus, the genetic throwback to the first demi-god progeny of the beast goddess, I caged a beast with rage and power rivaled by few, and possessed more than one animal familiar to shift into.

At least, I did until the SRD shot me full of chemicals. Would I ever regain my abilities? Hear the indignant screech of the peregrine falcon? Or the lusty purr of the mountain lion? Or soulful howl of the wolf?

My heart hammered, punching bone. A buzzing sensation filled my head. The “wrongness” of my condition grated against my nerves, slicing them into slivers like a planer shucking off wood shavings.

Something in my abdomen swelled, as if the beast pushed against whatever barrier caged and hid her from me.

I’ll get you out, I told her, not knowing if she could hear. We’ll make them pay.

Release Day for CARPE DEMON by J.C. McKenzie!

It's release day! CARPE DEMON, Book 3 in J.C. McKenzie's Carus Series is available today. Check it out!

Blurb:

As an ambassador with the Supernatural Regulatory Division, Andy McNeilly is responsible for acting as the Liaison for the Vancouver Vampire horde. The problem? She detests the Vampire Master, and the SRD can’t discover the beast she keeps locked inside.

After a menacing Demon throws an important Vampire event into chaos, Andy finds herself sniffing out crime scenes to identify and locate the mystery fiend from the nether realm. What she learns chills her bones.

Threatened by the Master Vampire to deal with the Demon, Andy's complicated personal life doesn't make things easier. She's willing to risk her life and pride to keep loved ones safe. But how can she make a choice that will break one heart…and complete another?

Excerpt:

The Demon’s grin widened. Standing a foot away from him with no room to maneuver and nothing to separate us, the serrated details of his shiny enamel glared at me.

My fingertips tingled as I started to shift.

Not fast enough.

The Demon lunged. His long nimble fingers closed around my neck as I shot my hands out, inside his arms, and dug my claws into his face. My elbows pushed against the insides of his arms. His hold should’ve weakened, but this Demon possessed uncanny strength. His frame stretched, growing to almost eight feet in height and giving his body an emaciated appearance. He pulled me close, his nose touching mine. I wrenched to the side, but my toes dangled above the floor.

“Bola sends his regards,” he said, his breath hitting my face.

My gums stung as fangs protruded and I hissed at him, ready to make the full change and get my fight on. I yanked on the mountain lion and spurred her into action.

“By all means, little nugget, shift into one of your animals.” He gnashed his sharp teeth together. “I love to rend the flesh of livestock, to mutilate the bodies of creatures, and to smash the bones of beasts.”
