#NewRelease JAZZ HOUSE by D.V. Stone

D.V. Stone is my guest today. Her new book, JAZZ HOUSE, book 2 in the Impact series, releases August 31, 2022. She sat down for an interview and told me about her writing and her life. Thanks for visiting, D.V.!

Jana, thank you so much for hosting me on your blog today. I’m excited to share about my new release. My Impact Series is near and dear to my heart.

Where did you get the idea for JAZZ HOUSE?

Jazz House is the second book of my Impact Series based on First Responders. The first book, Rock House Grill, is mostly about EMTs. In Jazz House, the main male character is Michael Machau. Michael is a police officer who was introduced as a secondary character in the first book. He is not only one of my favorite characters but seems to be a fan favorite.

Why did you choose this genre?

Several years ago, I did the National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo challenge. That’s where you commit to writing 50,000 words in thirty days. Now, those are a lot of words for a short period of time. Since I have experience as an EMT and in restaurant work, I wrote what I knew. The Wild Rose Press liked it and offered me a contract.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read JAZZ HOUSE?

Jazz House has a lot packed into it. An abusive relationship, a secret identity, making a way to overcome these things. I think the thing that I’d like to show most is that with supportive friends and family (whether they are blood relations on not), we can forge a new life and overcome the obstacles.

Do you work on more than one book at a time?

The short answer is yes. While I was writing Jazz House, I worked on two other stories. One has been submitted to my editor. (Shout out to ELF, who I adore. I call her my breathing coach as she gets me through the writing process). I have a project with several other authors that is an early work in progress. And working on a long-term project in my fantasy line, Shield-Mates of Dar.

How many books do you have under the proverbial bed? Will they ever see the light of day?

It’s crowded under there, LOL. I have the first book I ever started that needs tender loving care. The first book is done in draft but needs crazy editing. The manuscript is huge. There are two other books in various stages in that series. Also under that bed is the third book in my mid-grade paranormal series Agent Sam Carter Mysteries. There are a few other things too. A partial short story along the lines of Rainbow Sprinkles. Whew!

Do you write in the same place every day, or do you like to change it up?

D. V. is a rolling stone. I spend a great deal of time in my library/office, but I take it to my deck on nice days. I’m writing this interview in my camper. Occasionally I’ll head to the library when I need a further change of pace.

Tell us a bit about you. Where do you live, and how long have you been writing?

Since marrying my husband Pete twenty-eight years ago, I’ve lived in Northwest New Jersey. Before that, I lived in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where both Rock House Grill and Jazz House take place. Since retiring from full-time employment last year, we also spent the winter in a Florida campground where I worked on books, and Pete worked for the campground.

How do you think your life experiences have prepared you for writing?

Someone asked me if I see myself in any of my characters. My answer is an emphatic yes. All of them. I believe most authors dip into their good, bad, and ugly to develop their characters. I’ve been everything from a farmer, waitress, maid, EMT in an ambulance, emergency room, and woman’s state prison. Over the years, I have been a  veterinary hospital manager, radiology office secretary, and owned both a coffee house and a small restaurant. Whether I’m working on a fantasy novel or a contemporary, bits of my life and experience touch it all.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

I’m an animal lover and advocate. I’ve adopted all my pets and fostered many over the years, from Bassett Hounds to bottle baby kittens. Though I don’t have horses any longer, I’ll take any opportunity to be around them. Right now, Hali is my latest rescue dog, and Baby is our cat. By the way, Baby is seventeen years old and went to Florida with us this past winter. She was a champ and took to it like she’d been doing it since she was a kitten.

Hali

What are your hobbies away from the computer?

I live to glamp! We bought a 5th Wheel camper a few years ago, and I can’t get enough of travel. We especially like history and antiquing, so if a place has those, we’re on our way. In conjunction with that, cooking over an open fire is nearly an obsession. When we were in Florida, I often fed the campground. Give me fire, grate, or a tripod and Dutch Oven and ring that dinner bell.

What do you like best about your hero JAZZ HOUSE?

Oh, Michael! He’s a sweetheart who rescues people and animals. He’s loyal, thoughtful, and a bit of a romantic. I can’t wait for you to read about his German Shepherds Forest and Jenny.

What do you like best about your heroine in JAZZ HOUSE?

Jordon is complex. She’s made some bad decisions, and boy does she pay for them. However, she is not a coward and grabs her chance to escape and try to build a new life.

How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

I usually go to social security for contemporary works and look at popular names for the birth year. But let me tell you, as you write and the character develops, their name can change. In Rainbow Sprinkles, my main character is Gloriana Jones. The name just popped into my head one day with no story planned for her until TWRP called for submission for their One Scoop Or Two series. Gloriana was perfect for the part.

How can readers reach you or find you online?

I’m nearly everywhere! The best place to start is at my website https://www.dvstoneauthor.com/ and my monthly email list  https://mailchi.mp/18125bb60cc5/dv-stones-news-bulletin

Tell us a little about your current work in progress.

One of the things I’m working on is a cooperative effort with six other authors. I’m dipping my toe into historical paranormal romance with this one. Post WW2 action-adventure. Sort of like an underwater Indiana Jones. I’m excited to be part of this amazing group. Also, Felice, Shield-Mates of Dar Book One, was pulled and re-edited. She is being released with a new cover, and the second book, Kisa, will follow shortly.

If I was a first-time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

You could read Jazz House without reading Rock House Grill, but I think the reader would get a fuller, richer story to begin with RHG

Is there anything we haven’t covered here that you’d like to tell readers?

Be kind to each other. We have no idea what others are going through. Hold your friends and family close. Make an Impact in the world whenever you can. Oh, and Hali says, “Woof!”

(Translated to visit the shelters and adopt the pets.)

Blurb:

One woman’s choices. One man’s impact.

Jordan Vasilakis is on the run, living under an assumed name. After a disastrous marriage to a notorious Greek business tycoon, she flees to the States and starts rebuilding her life. But her ruthless husband is determined to destroy her…once he finds her.

Michael Machau is drawn to the new singer at Jazz House restaurant, but the guarded woman is harboring dangerous secrets. The dedicated police officer may have to risk more than just his heart to forge a connection with the woman he knows as Madeline Cielo, especially when he discovers she’s living a lie.

Worlds collide. Lies entangle. Survival, much less love, is in question. They must quickly distinguish friends from enemies or risk losing everything—including a future together.

Excerpt:

Jordan scrambled to the other side of the limo.

“You sing good tonight.” He scrolled through his phone.

“Yes, Kyrios.”

Outside the window, massive cruise ships docked in the port. Happy older people made their way up the gangplanks toting bags filled with souvenirs, while the younger ones debarked dressed for the nightlife. Sparkly sequins flashed like diamonds as one young woman twirled on the pier.

God, how had she come to this life? She willed her hovering tears not to fall. Kyrios wouldn’t approve.

When she was offered a place in the touring group ten years ago, she thought it was the beginning of great things. Standing in the cabaret with the lights shining down was her dream come true. When she was the woman in the sparkly dress.

Until he showed up.

Each night, Kyrios Vasilakis, Greek business tycoon, sat at the front table watching her. Yes, he was older but so very handsome. Dark hair with silver at the temples, he cut a dashing figure in his black suits.

Jordan began to sing to him. It was the beginning of the end. After a whirlwind romance, she found herself a prisoner in marriage to a brute.

1st Book Birthday: ROCK HOUSE GRILL!

D.V. Stone is here to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of  ROCK HOUSE GRILL's publication. Happy Book Birthday, D.V.!

Happy Birthday to Rock House Grill.

I can’t believe it’s been a year already since publication. The road to get there was filled with potholes and detours. Rock House Grill started out as a NaNoWriMo challenge in November of 2015. The challenge is 50,000 words in 30 days. I was able to complete the first draft and received my certificate. Then, like many manuscripts, it was set aside while I finished other projects. I had a couple of independents in the hopper and focused on those.

Fast forward to 2019. I pulled up some old files, and there sat Rock House waving at me. “Hey, remember me?” I did, and with fresh eyes, began to revisit. I’d always dreamed of becoming a traditionally published author. To be able to say, my publishing house—my editor. I began to send out query letters. Let’s just say most places don’t even send a response, much less express an interest.

I sent several letters out in May. Word of warning. Be careful to look things over before you hit send. In horror, I realized the salutation in the email to The Wild Rose Press had another’s name on it. Panic ensued, and a new email went out. “Wild Rose Press. I know you’re The Wild Rose Press!”

Well, I blew that one. Wait. Not necessarily. A few days before my birthday, there was a ding in my inbox. Please send… OMG! Then came the next. Please send the full manuscript. After a couple of starts, stops, and a change in editors, this came on Jul 13, 2017.

Dear Donna,

My name is ELF and I am the editor who has been assigned to evaluate your story, “The Rock House Grill,” for The Wild Rose Press.

Poor ELF didn’t know what she was getting into. At one point, she had to use tough love and warn me I had one more chance.

So here we are in 2021. You do the math. Publishing for me is not a straight road. I imagine for many, it’s a long pothole-filled one. But don’t give up. Even when you send the wrong email.

Rock House Grill and I are celebrating our first birthday together. Coming soon is the second Impact book Jazz House. Who knows when that book birthday will be. But I’m sure it will be as sweet as this one. You want to know why? Just like having more than one child, holding each of your subsequent books is an amazing feeling.

My final word to you? Go forth and be bold. Don’t let fear or worry hold you back. I promise it’s worth it.

Blurb:

Aden House, successful but driven chef and TV personality, refuses to slow down. His life implodes one night, damaging him both physically and emotionally. He’s rescued by a woman he thinks of as his angel.

Shay McDowell has rebuilt her life after her divorce. She juggles volunteer EMT duties and her job, while dreaming of becoming a chef. She finds her way to Rock House Grill and back into the life of the man she helped save.

Can love be the ingredient needed to survive the many obstacles they face?

Reviews:

This engrossing story had it all, mystery, suspense, and romance. The twists and turns made it impossible to put down. I enjoyed the supporting characters as well. I will be looking for more from this talented storyteller.

This book is a delightful, savory, hopeful, fun, romantic, and warmhearted read!!

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. The author portrayed a vivid description of the glamorous world of the high-end restaurant business. The characters were believable, and I rooted for Shay, the heroine, to overcome the many obstacles in her quest to find true love with Aden, the physically and emotionally damaged hero.

Excerpt:

“Easy, you’re going to be okay.”

A soft voice eased through the chaos around him. The owner of the voice grabbed his arms and held them in a firm but gentle grip. “I’m right here with you. You are not alone.”

“Can hardly m-move.” His voice slurred. “C-can’t see anything.”

“You’ve been in an accident. I’m an EMT with the ambulance squad,” the velvety voice calmly explained. “You can’t see well because we’re under a tarp. Hold still, okay?”

 “‘K.”

A small light flickered at the edge of his vision. It shone into a bag next to him. Penlight. “You’re restrained to a board. It’s to keep your head from moving and causing more injury.”

She continued to talk to him. The voice reached down somewhere inside him, calming and peaceful, so he focused on it. A glow from spotlights on the outside lit whatever covered them. The shadow gave the woman the appearance of a halo—like an angel.

About the Author:

Hi, my name is D. V. Stone. I am a multi-genre author of two independently published books. Felice, Shield-Mates of Dar is a fantasy romance. Agent Sam Carter and the Mystery at Branch Lake is a mid-grade paranormal. Recently, Rock House Grill was released by Wild Rose Press. Rainbow Sprinkles, a novella released on July 8th. I also host Welcome to the Campfire and A Peek Through the Window, both weekly blogs. Here’s a little more about me.

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Throughout her wandering, she always considered herself a Jersey Girl. She met and married the love of her life, Pete—a lifelong Jersey Man, and moved this time to Sussex County.  They live with Hali, a mixed breed from the local shelter, and their cat Baby.

D.V.’s career path varied from working with the disabled to become a volunteer EMT, which in turn led to working in hospital emergency rooms and then in a women’s state prison. After a few years, she took a break from medicine and became the owner of Heavenly Brew, a specialty coffee shop in Sparta, NJ, and a small restaurant in Lafayette. Life handed some setbacks. She ended up back in the medical field, but this time in a veterinary emergency hospital.

“Thank you for taking the time to read about me. Each time you open the pages to one of my books, I hope you’ll be swept away by the story and find encouragement in your own life, never to give up on hope.”

My Review:

What I love most about this book is how real it feels. The scenes in the restaurant, whether they’re in the kitchen or at the front of house, feel authentic. The EMT/ambulance scenes feel like the author has lived them. And most especially the characters’ emotions feel real. I could feel Aden’s frustration and gratitude at surviving his accident, but being unable to do the things he did before. Shay’s nervousness at starting a new job at the restaurant was very real, and so was her coolness under pressure in her role as an EMT. And the way they feel about each comes through as well. I loved Aden’s reaction when he first met his “angel” after his accident. It felt totally true to the characters. The rest of the supporting cast was wonderful. They were all fully drawn characters with emotions and desires of their own. Kudos to D.V. Stone for a wonderful read!

Spotlight on ROCK HOUSE GRILL by D.V. Stone

D.V. Stone returns to Journeys with Jana for another look at her brand new release (April 6, 2020) ROCK HOUSE GRILL. If you missed her first visit with her favorite scene, check it out here. Welcome D.V.!

Excerpt:

“God, I need a miracle.” Olivia rubbed at the muscles knotted tight in her neck and shoulders.

“Well, maybe I’m an answer to your prayer.”

Spinning around, Olivia stared into a set of hazel eyes, twinkling with good humor and backed by steel. “Who are you?”

“Hi, I’m Shay McDowell.” The young woman came toward Olivia with her hand outstretched. Medium height, chestnut-colored hair pulled into a high ponytail, and tasteful makeup, she wore a sharp suit and practical, stacked heels. Shay McDowell looked the epitome of professional.

“Olivia House.” She wiped her damp palm and grasped the proffered hand, giving it a brisk, businesslike shake. “How can I help you, Ms. McDowell?”

“It’s Shay, and I stopped by to drop off my résumé.” The woman shrugged one shoulder and lifted her hand at the disaster. “But if you’re willing, I could give you an on-the-spot interview and get this under control.”

Quickly scanning the résumé, Olivia then eyed the shorter woman. “The previous hostess left with no notice.”

“Yeah, I met her in the doorway, but I’m more than a hostess. My specialty is Front of House.” Shay stepped back and glanced around the room. “Take a few moments. I’ll understand if you decline the offer. It’s not the normal way of applying for a job.”

Olivia took a moment to study Shay over the top of the résumé. The woman stood straight with shoulders back and chin lifted, wearing an admirable confidence. Her résumé definitely indicated experience.

“Well, it can’t get much worse than this. Have at it.”

At the rate the staff was going, it didn’t matter, they wouldn’t be ready for the first customers anyway. Margaret and Eli were dealing with their own issues in the kitchen and wouldn’t be any help out front. Stepping back, Olivia took a seat to watch the show. How had things deteriorated this far? Aden usually ran a tight ship. His split focuses recently had set in motion a downward cascade. Everything he’d planned to accomplish was falling apart. His absence the past couple of days was the final straw.

“Swwwttttt!” A sharp whistle filled the air, and Olivia jumped. She gaped as Shay took two fingers out of her mouth. The interviewee then proceeded to squirt hand sanitizer from a small bottle she pulled out of her purse and rubbed it into her skin while the staff hushed. Blessed silence filled the room as everyone turned to stare at the composed figure with hands now on her hips.

“May I have your attention, please?” Her pleasant voice carried well without shouting. “I’m Shay McDowell, and for today, I am your Front of House. We have two hours to pull this together, and I’m counting on each and every one of you to either step up or step out. From what I’ve heard, your boss, Aden House, deserves more respect than this.”

Gazes drifted toward each other. Soft murmuring and the shuffling of feet revealed embarrassment from many of the staff. No one left.

“Okay, I guess you’re all in.” Shay walked to the center of the room and started firing off orders.

She certainly knew how to work a crowd. Within minutes, the entire staff was eating out of her hand and working as a team.

D.V. Stone's Favorite Scene from ROCK HOUSE GRILL

I love the old saying "Men make plans and God laughs". In D.V. Stone's upcoming release, ROCK HOUSE GRILL, Aden and Shay's plans come crashing down around them, but together they learn there's always Plan B, and it can be better than they ever imagined. ROCK HOUSE GRILL releases April 6, 2020 from The Wild Rose Press. Welcome D.V.!

Have you ever had everything planned out for your life? You were going to go to school and get a degree in a field you loved, but no one was hiring in that field. Maybe find the partner of your dreams and live happily ever after, until the divorce. You were going to raise your kids to be amazing people, but they didn’t turn out how you expected. The bank account you were building for retirement ended up going toward medical bills.

Don’t get depressed yet. I’m an author whose main ARC or Trope, is hope. A bit of personal history. I’ve owned and lost businesses. Heath issues are real. I’ve been divorced. Laid off from long term jobs. Money? Fuhgeddaboudit! (I can use that expression, I’m from NJ.)

So, when I was asked about my favorite scene in Rock House Grill, this one immediately came to mind. Here’s the setup. Circumstances in Aden House's life are a contributing factor leading to a terrible car accident. He is in a rehabilitation center with damaged legs. In the midst of an anger/pity party, a very smart man comes into his room who may or not be loosely based on someone I know.

“Do you need anything?” John, the rehab aide, popped his head in the door. “Can you get your legs on the bed?”

“I’ll be fine.”

The man flinched at his sharpness. Aden took a deep breath. “Sorry, thank you.”

“I know it’s frustrating.” John came in, picked up the grabber, and leaned against the wall. “It might help to talk to someone.”

“I’ve already talked.” Aden grabbed one leg, then the other, lifting them onto the bed. “See, it’s all good.”

The other man didn’t back off, though. “So, you’ve talked to someone. What did they say?”

Aden leaned back, put his arms behind the pillow, and stared at the ceiling tiles. “I would experience anger, frustration, insecurity—blah, blah, blah.”

“And what were you experiencing when I heard you throwing things and stuck my head in?”

Aden closed his eyes. “All of it.”

When he opened his eyes, John stood at his bedside. “You’re still the man you were. It’s a rough patch. You’ve hit rough patches before?”

“Not really.”

“Welcome to the other ninety percent of humanity.” The aide stooped down, so he and Aden were on eye level. Laugh lines and slight graying at the temples were the only indications he was older than Aden. “Circumstances change us. We can curse them and let them control us. Or, we allow whatever happens to make us better.”

“I get it.”

“No, I don’t think you do.” John paused a moment, grabbed a chair, and straddled it. “I have this friend. He’s a runner.”

Aden pulled himself up, leaned against the headboard, and snorted. “I’m getting a bedtime story?”

“Yeah.” John laughed. “The guy wants to be in the Olympics. Every day he runs and practices. Every day he gets home, and he hurts all over, especially his feet. Blisters like I’ve never seen. They bleed. But after a while, blisters go away, bleeding stops, and calluses develop.”

“You’re saying I should develop calluses?”

“Wait, calluses are not the point of the story. The guy makes the team. Heads to Atlanta.”

“Did he win?” Aden couldn’t help being caught up in the story. “Have I heard of him?”

“He got sick.” John leaned his arms on the back of the chair. “Pneumonia, the day the meets started.”

“Then all his work was for nothing.” Well, that wasn’t helpful. Shouldn’t this be a story about a winner? “Just like me.”

The other man shook his head. “I didn’t say The End.”

“What happened?”

“He went to the hospital and nearly died. But there was this nurse.” John’s eyes went distant. “She was beautiful and determined her patient would make it.”

“Did he?”

“Yup. They fell in love, got married, and had a couple of kids.” John pushed the chair back and stood up. “Not the life he’d planned. He regretted not achieving what he’d worked so hard for, but once he adjusted, his life turned out great.”

Aden developed a sneaking suspicion in his gut as the aide headed for the door. “What does this guy do now?”

“He gets great satisfaction in helping injured people get on with their lives.” John closed the door behind him.

“Easy, you’re going to be okay.” A soft voice eased through the chaos around him.

Author Bio:

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Throughout her wandering, she always considered herself a Jersey Girl. She met and married the love of her life, Pete—a lifelong Jersey Man, and moved this time to Sussex County.  They adopted Hali, a mixed breed from the local shelter, who is still working things out with their cat Baby.

D.V.’s career path varied from working with the disabled to become a volunteer EMT, which in turn led to working in hospital emergency rooms and then in a women's state prison. After a few years, she took a break from medicine and became the owner of Heavenly Brew, a specialty coffee shop in Sparta NJ, and a small restaurant in Lafayette. Life handed some setbacks, and she ended up back in the medical field, but this time in a veterinary emergency hospital.

During the poor economy, she was laid–off from a long-time position she cared about. Devastated, D.V. wondered what to do with her life. Finding comfort in her love of reading, she realized it was now time to follow her dream of writing. It's been a long road but worth every minute of it. Now a published author, she also works in a people medical office again.
