Hey there Jana, thank you for inviting me to your blog to chat about my new holiday release MERINGUE SNOWFLAKE MAGIC and companion animals in our books.

Do you have companion animals at home? I do and I don’t know what I’d do without them. When I’m feeling low, or want to talk something through, Mystic my dog and Taco my parrot are always willing to listen. Even Sammy Turtle, will listen, but is more intent into traveling across the floor to parts unknown. They tell me when it’s time for lunch (Yes we all eat together) and when it’s time to quit for the day and relax in the sunroom with them. These are just a few of their responsibilities. LOL

Naturally, most of my books have companion animals to bring the story and characters more depth. Strangely enough, my new release MERINGUE SNOWFLAKE MAGIC doesn’t have one, but its sequel does.

 After being in the wrong place at the wrong time Wynter Dahl finds herself with a new name and new home.  Whisked into the Witness Protection program she finds herself in the Podunk town of Raven’s Hollow, Colorado.  She has more than one secret to keep and is not sure who she can trust, though the deputy sheriff is hard to resist.

The wind had changed direction, and the pretty ice crystals were like tiny needles buffeting her face. She looked up and down Main Street and saw only one stoplight. Finally, she turned around and walked backward for a few yards. Glancing over her shoulder, she could see her street. She started to turn around, her foot slipped on the curb and arms flailing, down she went with a thud. Clutching her precious box of goodies in front of her, they were safe. However, the mug of hot chocolate popped the lid and sent hot chocolate in all directions, including all over her brand new bright-colored parka and the sidewalk. When she tried to get up, each foot went in a different direction, then down she went again. Getting to her knees, she crawled to the sidewalk, carefully got to her feet, and tried to brush the wet snow off. The damp material stuck to her. She began to shiver as the wind whipped around her.

“Hey lady, you all right?” A man stopped his SUV in the middle of the road and jumped out. “That was quite a spill you took.” He smiled wide, picking up her mug and lid. “But I see your goodies from Candi’s place are still intact. Let me give you a ride. You’re going to freeze as wet as your clothes are.” He held out his hand. “Braydon Nightwing, but everyone calls me Blaze. I own the pizza place a few blocks down the way.” 

When she reached for his hand, her arm shook. Her teeth chattered as she tried to say her name. “Wynterrr.”

“It’s warm in my SUV. Please tell me where you’re going. I’ll get you there.” He pried her fingers from the box, helped her over to the vehicle, and opened the passenger door. Warm air rushed out of the SUV, caressing her face.

Please don’t let him be a serial killer. Slowly, she reached behind her and patted her waistband. Shit. Why didn’t I bring my weapon? Getting in a car with a stranger wasn’t smart. But the warmth emanating from the vehicle was inviting.  Death by serial killer or freeze. She crawled into the SUV and huddled in front of the heater vents.

They waved goodbye to their friends and slipped out the back door. It was a bit of a walk to the Mists, but porting in broad daylight wouldn’t be wise.

As they walked through the eerie Scottish Mists, the silence wrapped around them like a smothering blanket. A stand of druid stones emerged from the thick fog towering above them. Chinoah shivered against him. Magic rolled of the stones in warning.

With the image of the 1878 blacksmith shop in his head and whispering spirits in his mind, their adventure began. His hands tightly wrapped around Chinoah, their duffels secured on their backs. He closed his eyes and focused his vision on Wylder, Wyoming Territory of 1878 inside Dugan’s Blacksmith shop. This was his first mistake. He was unsure of the blacksmith shop's interior, as he’d never seen it. 

Instead, they are unceremoniously dumped, what he hoped was only several yards outside the shop, in the worst blizzard he’d ever seen. He tightened his grip on Chinoah. Guess I paid too much attention to the description of the building itself and let that disrupt my landing location.  The wind-driven snow swirled around them, making visibility difficult if not impossible. A large dark mass faded in and out of the sheets of snow not far from them.

Participating in a Multi-Author Series – Interesting and Fun.

Have you ever started a project only to discover it's not going to be anything like you envisioned? Such is the constant situation of a writer who writes by the seat of her pants. The characters involved in the story take over and run with the plot, character arc, and anything else within their grasp.

Because I can't plot my way out of a paper bag, and I've tried, I endure the escapades of my characters. Nine times out of ten, I end up with an imaginative and well-written book. Such is the case of my new release, An Angel's Wylder Assignment, part of The Wild Rose Press multi-author Wyld West series.

Creating a fictional community with other authors is fun if a little daunting. So many individuals' points of view and writing technics melded into one world. Sharing characters in the many storylines and making it all cohesive can be challenging for the writer but fun for the reader. They get to engage with characters they already know and love, then discover new characters added to the mix in a town or community familiar to them.  

If you have never read or written a multi-author series, I highly recommend The Wylder West Series. There are genres to satisfy all readers tastes.

HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC - #NewRelease from Tena Stetler

Today's guest, Tena Stetler, brings with her Brock Scutter from her newest release, HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC. Brock let us interview him and he tells us about his work, his goals and the love of his life. Come on in and read about a character Tena calls "bold with a heart of gold." Welcome Tena and Brock!

Hi Jana, thanks for having Brock Scutter, hero of HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC and myself on your blog. Before I turn this over to Brock for his bucket list, I thought I’d give you a little background on Brock.

Brock came into A Witch’s Journey Series in A Witch’s Holiday Wedding.  A muscular, handsome, young man dedicated to the care of all kinds of creatures.  He was still single because all his energies were spent on becoming a veterinarian. After college, he went to work for a small clinic in Salem, Mass., leaving him little time for anything else. The owner retired and Brock purchased the practice. His sister, Dylan is the veterinarian for Lobster Cove.  His sister got really sick that year and asked him to cover her practice in Lobster Cove while she recuperated, since his vet clinic in Salem was semi-closed for the holidays with only a skeleton crew for emergencies. He’d considered adding wildlife medicine to his clinic and figured this would be a great way to get his feet wet. Boy, did he.  

Lobster Cove was certainly not what he expected.  Oh, on the surface it was a friendly fishing town. When he was sent to Lobster Cove Wildlife Rescue and Rehab to deliver an injured owl on the endangered list he made a shocking discovery. 

It was this trip to Lobster Cove, Maine that he met Gwen Taylor.

Brock here. Geez. How do I follow that introduction?  I’m really just a man who wants what’s best for the creatures under my care and the people I care about. 

Be that has it may, you promised to answer a few questions.  (Jana laughs.)  

When someone dies, we say they "kicked the bucket." Therefore, a list of things that a person wants to accomplish, places to go, situations to experience, and so on have become known as a "Bucket List."

First how about a bit of personal information?

Age:  late 30’s

Gender:  Male

Birthplace:  Salem, Mass

Profession:  Veterinarian

Ethnicity: Irish Gypsy

Please describe yourself: Hard working, goal oriented, dedicated to the animals brought to my clinic. My personal life has always taken a back seat to my education and now my vet clinic. 

Who is the significant other in your life? Gwen Taylor. She is the owner, manager of Salem Wildlife Rescue and Sanctuary.  We were introduced by Pepper and Lathen.  As you know, my sister, Dylan is the veterinarian in Lobster Cove which is where Pepper built a Wildlife rescue after leaving Salem.  Now I serve as the veterinarian for Salem Sanctuary.  

Birth order: I’m the baby of the family. I have three sisters and one brother. If you don’t think that was a tough way to grow up.  My sisters tried to dress me up like their dolls. My brother didn’t want his little brother tagging along. But we are a close knit family. 

Tell us about your favorite toy as a child. I never had many toys. For as long as I can remember, I helped Dylan care for the injured creatures she brought home with nowhere to go. Which, I guess explains why we are both vets.   

Describe your favorite food and how it's prepared.  A big juicy Porterhouse steak, baked potato with sour cream and butter,  homemade rolls, and French-style green beans.  For dessert, a big piece of Lemon Meringue pie.  My mom makes the very best.  I don’t see my parents as often as I’d like.  They spend a lot of time in Ireland now that all us kids are grown.

Tell us about your best friend.   That would be Lathen Quartz.  He’s Pepper’s husband. A former Navy Seal and does a great job finding disabled vets jobs where they can succeed.  He placed two individuals in Gwen’s Sanctuary recently. They are a perfect fit.  Kinda paying it forward. Don’t you think? 

What are two places you would like to visit before you die, and why? 

Australia – They have so many different species of wildlife found nowhere else on the planet.   

Ireland – I’d like to meet my relatives on the Emerald Isle.

Where is a place you would never like to return, and why? I can’t  think of anywhere I’ve been that I wouldn’t like to return.   

Who is someone you would like to meet, and why? Terry, Binde, Robert Irwin.  They are trail blazers in wildlife conservation.  I’d like to have met Steve. But…. 

Who is someone you would like to avoid, and why? The damn banker that caused Gwen so much heartache.  But in the end. I guess he got what he deserved. LOL  

If you could time travel to any date, what would it be, and what would you do there? I’d love to travel back to Ireland in the time my Grandda and Grandma lived.  They were gypsies, you know, and lived the old ways and believed in the magic.

Well, thank you for your candid responses. Brock.  I’m so glad you stopped by. Now I have a few questions for the author of HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC.

What was your biggest challenge in writing this book, Tena?

Putting a different spin on the Salem Witch Trials.    

Why did you choose this character for the interview today?  

Brock popped into A Witch’s Holiday Wedding and became larger than life. He’s is such a bold character with a heart of gold.  

When writing the book, what did you discover about this character that surprised you? 

His ability to see the best in most people and his ability to embrace the unexpected with grace.     

Are any sequels planned for this book?   

Actually, I’m glad you asked.  CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY MAGIC (Set to release in April of 2021) is the fourth book in A Witch’s Journey Series and one of the One Scoop or Two summer series from The Wild Rose Press. 

Why should readers who haven't picked up one of your books before give this one a try?   

Now more than ever, we need heart-warming, feel-good books to whisk us away from our new normal into a magical, fantasy adventure for just a few hours.  HIDDEN GYPSY MAGIC, and all of my books for that matter, are a welcome stress reliever, if only for a few hours at a time.

March came in like a lamb, but a few days later a frigid wind gripped the northeast region of the United States with a vengeance. Gwen covered the box with her tiny treasures inside and shoved open the vehicle door. When the SUV's door slammed against her legs, she yelped but continued to tightly hold the cover in place over the box.  I'll have bruises tomorrow. Once inside Brock's vet office, she glanced at the empty receptionist area. "Anybody here?" No one answered, so she eased into a seat and waited anxiously with a cardboard box on her lap. Weak scratching came from the box. Carefully lifting the cover, she peeked inside to make sure the little creatures were safe.

When the front door banged open of the veterinary clinic, she jumped. A cold breeze swept through the waiting room ahead of Delta, the receptionist, who rushed in throwing her arms up in an exasperated gesture. "Sorry, I'm late. Traffic."  She frowned while rounding the reception desk and glanced down at the appointment book, then back up to Gwen. "I don't have you on my schedule today." Leaning over the counter, the receptionist pointed to the box. "What's in there?"

 Gwen's face flushed in anger. "Someone dumped these poor innocent turtles or more accurately Desert Tortoises by the side of the road. They can't be much more than a few weeks old. Even the spring temps are close to freezing at night. Poor little things were cold, dehydrated, defenseless, and malnourished." She glanced at the receptionist. Dr. Brock Scutter is expecting me, I spoke to him late last night.

CHARM ME AGAIN by Tena Stetler

I'm happy to have a visit from fellow Wild Rose Press author Tena Stetler. She's here to celebrate her newest release CHARM ME AGAIN, a paranormal romance. Take it away, Tena!

Charm Me Again was inspired by the characters not being finished with their story from Charm Me, published in 2016 as a 20,000 word novella.  I guess you could say I’m long winded because that story had only one story line when in fact there were more. Yet it was one of my best sellers. Summer’s dysfunctional family was left out entirely because I couldn’t do it justice. Her brother… well… you’ll see in Charm Me Again.

A scene in the book was created several years ago from my personal experience of hiking up the Hanging Lake trail in the pouring rain. Posted as an easy hike, it was anything but. Yep, they lied. Since that time the listing of the hike has been upgraded to moderate. You’ve never lived until you climb over large rain slickened rocks and boulders on an uphill trail gaining 1,000 feet in elevation over the mile climb. But oh my the view of a lake on the side of a mountain is breath-taking! We stayed and ate our packed lunch on the shore, enjoyed the scenery and other awe inspiring places around the lake. At the time, I knew Hanging Lake would become part of a book one day.  That day came as I was writing Charm Me Again. The background on the cover art is Hanging Lake. A better representation is on the meme included with this post.

What’s the story about you ask? Well, let me tell you a little about Charm Me Again, just released December 9, 2019.

For several months a Scottish Highland Ghost has haunted Daylan, in his personal life, his professional life and at his forge. As they climbed, the trail became steeper and rockier. He grabbed hold of the handrails assuming they were provided for oxygen-deprived people like him. How do people breathe up here? Until now he’d prided himself in being in excellent shape.

She turned and peeked over her shoulder. “You all right back there? We’re almost to the top.”

About damn time. Huffing out another breath, he leaned against a large boulder. The trail opened up and the Lake came into view. He sucked in a breath at the geologic wonder before his eyes. Suspended on the edge of Glenwood Canyon’s cliff, waterfalls spilled into a clear turquoise lake. Lush green plants trailed from the outcropping of rock on the walls surrounding the water was like nothing he’d ever seen. “This is absolutely unbelievable.”

She grinned. “Told you.” Grabbing his hand she tugged him to the boardwalk area surrounding part of the lake and plopped down. “Rest, we’ll eat our sandwiches and then I’ll show you around.”

“Sounds good.” He eased down on a rock and shrugged off his pack, opened it, and handed her a sandwich. He wolfed down his sandwich, chips and drank another bottle of water.

Suddenly, the wind changed direction, a thin maroon line formed along the flat bottom of the dark clouds spreading across the sky where moments before there’d been only a few fluffy cotton ball clouds in a sea of blue. The maroon line widened then switched to vertical and spread open to reveal a shimmering interior. Shadows emerged from the cloud then disappeared. As he was about to comment, huge raindrops plopped on the ground followed by pea size hail that grew to softball size.

Josie ran for cover and he followed. Protected under a ledge, she cupped her hands over her ears as the roaring of the storm combined with huge ice balls smashing against rocks echoed through the canyon. She elbowed him and cocked a brow in question, pointing to the vegetation that remained unharmed.

His eyes narrowed. Something isn’t right. I can feel it. Magic is spinning this storm. But who—how and why?

In the middle of the vardo an old weathered chest was completely out of place. She leaned over.

“Don’t touch that,” he barked. It was too late.

Her fingers stroked the rusted padlock. It sprang open. Puffs of dried soil sprinkled the carpet around the chest. He placed a restraining hand on her arm just as she tentatively dug her fingers into the soil.
“This isn’t from your land. It’s—.” A swirl of colors sucked them in and a feeling of weightlessness surrounded her. She grabbed hold of Sil’s arm. The dog yipped. Then suddenly they were back inside the wagon.

Only something was amiss, the silence, the earthy smell wasn’t right. She shivered. What have I done? Taking a deep breath, she whirled around to face Sil.

“What the hell just happened?”

He shrugged. “You promised not to touch a thing. Let’s get out of here.” Reaching for the vardo’s handle, he pushed down, and the door opened into a small barn. He strode to the door, tugging Mercy along with him. When he shoved it open moonlight spread across an open field casting silvery shadows through the bordering trees. Off in the distance stood a ramshackle cabin.

A warm breeze swept her hair across her face. She stared unblinking. Nothing about the landscape was familiar except the stands of young trees. She bent as if to touch the soil.

His arm flew out and prevented her from reaching the ground. “It’s true,” he murmured surveying the area. His lips set in a thin line, he rubbed his temples, and stared. Mocking her. “I won’t touch a thing. Well… you did and now…”

“Now what?” she whispered.

Tena answers a few of my questions about her writing, and she's got an exclusive excerpt for us. Please welcome Tena Stetler!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

I don’t know whether they are necessarily unusual or not.  I work on three novels at a time. One in research, one in edits and writing one.  I write the scenes, chapters, stories as they come to me, which are always out of order.  In the end somehow everything comes together in the right chronological order. Amazes me each time it happens. LOL

What do you like best about your hero in An Angel’s Unintentional Entanglement?

Warrior Angel, Caden Silverwind, lives alone in Colorado rugged Rockies, healing from physical wounds as well as the mental anguish suffered during battles with dark demons.  Against the advice of his superiors he’s on an indefinite sabbatical in the mountains. Their rugged strength and majestic beauty allows him the serenity to pick up the pieces, face his own fears, and contemplate the future, if there was one. When he finds a woman on a trail barely clinging to life after a horrendous beating he uses his weakened power to save her, risking his own life.

What do you like best about your heroine? 

Her strength, loyalty to friends and family, and her ability to weather circumstances that would defeat most individuals. Bureau of Indian Affairs Agent, Mystic Rayne’s personal dilemma and assignment nearly gets her killed. Yet she will to do whatever it takes to right the wrongs perpetrated on innocents.  Divine intervention is a complication she never expected.

How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters?

Believe it or not, my characters enter my mind fully formed and with their names and demanding to have their stories told.

Do you base them on real people?

I don’t think so.

Tell us a little about your current works in progress.

I’m awaiting galley and cover art on A Magic Redemption, the fifth book in A Demon’s Witch Series. As well as, writing a paranormal romance for The Deerbourne Inn Series that my publisher The Wild Rose developed. And I’m excited to be working on my first cozy mystery.

Do you have an event coming up you’d like to tell us about?

Other than the online events listed on my website, I have a booth to sell my books at the Colorado Springs ComicCon.  I’ve never attended a ComicCon, so this should be interesting.  This year, I decided to try one thing a month that scares me.  This is it.  If your readers have any suggestions about the ComicCon, I’d love to hear them.

She had fifty new voice messages and twenty text messages. The text screen popped up with 611 on it. She went pale and checked the rest of the texts. All 611 and all sent this afternoon.

“What is it?” Caden put his hand on her shoulder as he squinted at the screen.

“That’s a code Chinoah and I used as children. It means she’s in big trouble.” She turned her worried eyes to Caden. “We have to find her. He may have killed her by now.”

“Not if she doesn’t know where you are. She is still leverage for him against you as long as she’s alive. I’ll contact Nat.”

Holding her phone to her chest, Mystic followed him into the bedroom. He slid open a closet door and reached far back in the wardrobe, his fingers rested on his celestial diamond sword and platinum spelled daggers. Grabbing the chest harness, he slipped his arms through and sheathed the daggers. Then he slung the leather scabbard over his back slipping the magical sword inside.

Never in his wildest dreams did he expect to wear his weapons again. In fact, he’d almost given them to his friend Killian, who refused, saying a warrior, even a retired warrior never parts with his weapons. Idly, he wondered if Killian had foreseen this situation. He’d heard rumors that Killian had inherited the second sight of his Scottish mother, which he retained through the angel transition. Killian never confirmed or denied such talent.

Pepper hopped out of the truck and took a deep breath. The ocean breeze brought a mixed scent of brine, sand, sun and kelp. "Pepper McKay, call me Pepper." Extending her hand towards him, she met his gaze. His large aquamarine eyes were mesmerizing, set above the high cheekbones, full lips and a butterscotch five o'clock shadow. She gave her head a shake. "Wait. You built an aviary?"

He shook her hand and smiled, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans and rocking back on his heels.
