#NewRelease from Nancy Fraser: TEACH ME

Nancy Fraser makes a return visit to Journeys with Jana to tell us about TEACH ME, Book 3 in her Lusty Liaisons series. Since Nancy writes "short" or novella length, she wants to let us know what goes into writing a book of a shorter length. From experience, I can tell you the same amount of effort goes into writing a novella as something much longer. Welcome Nancy! Glad to have you back.

The Art of Writing Short

While most writers/authors strive to create that great novel, be it romance or mystery or thriller, there are distinct advantages to being able to write a shorter length novella or short story.

However, there’s a huge difference in being able to write “short” vs being able to write “complete”. Writing something short, e.g., 10,000 – 40,000 words, takes as much skill (if not more) than writing 80,000 words. The challenge is to tell a complete story within the context of the shorter length.

As a reader, I prefer reading shorter books as well. Books I can finish in a couple of hours, yet tell a full and rewarding story without all the ephemeral stuffing. Nothing irks me more than to come across pages and pages of unnecessary filler. I’d much rather read something that’s non-stop story from front to back. I find I’m far more satisfied.

As the writer of shorter pieces, I find the planning to be more intricate. I know I’ve only got so many pages in which to get from that first meeting (be it instant attraction or dislike), to the happily-ever-after.

Going into the book, I have to develop a firm character outline so that I know my heroine, hero, and supporting characters inside out. I have to have my black moments defined before I write them, and I have to (in my head at least) have my conclusion envisioned.

With my new release, Teach Me, (15,000 words) writing short wasn’t as much of a challenge as usual because the story was intended to take place in one, hot and steamy, night. So, as much as you’d think you can’t develop character in a string of lovescenes, you definitely can. All you need to do is show vulnerability, acceptance, and resolution of the character’s main reason for embarking on their one-night-stand.

In my upcoming Cougars & Cubs, age-gap romance, Seduced by the Handyman, (26,000 words) I had to develop a full, strong relationship and a plausible reason why their 15 year age difference would work. That meant a full story, challenges, resolutions, and happily-ever-after. It also meant weaving in supporting characters and giving just enough to fill out the story, but not enough that any of them would take over parts of the plot.

Writing the shorter length has become my ultimate writing plan. On occasion, I do push the boundaries and write 55-60,000 words, but not often. They say, “write what you love” and for me, shorter is the way to go.

Blurb:

Can this tenured professor create the best lesson plan for her ultimate satisfaction?

Med student Jayne Willis is devastated when she's stood up for a date arranged by hookup service Lusty Liaisons. Really, who stands up someone willing to have sex?

Widowed professor Noah Gallagher's chance encounter at a hotel bar with an alluring young woman is unexpected but might be just what he needs. He's on the last leg of a cross-country trip prior to returning to the university, ready to start a new chapter in his life.

One lonely widower looking to reconnect plus one beautiful, albeit inexperienced, young woman equals one hot night. Will she get an A in lovemaking, and will he get a hall pass back to life?

Excerpt:

A quick, hot shower, clean T-shirt and jeans, and Noah was back in the lobby within twenty minutes. The bar was nearly empty except for an older couple enjoying martinis at a corner table, a middle-aged man in a cheap suit nursing a beer at the bar, and a young woman, no doubt barely legal, sitting alone in a two-person booth.

The woman intrigued him. Not just because she was attractive—which she was—but because he couldn’t fathom why she’d be there alone. Or why she’d come out on a night like this if she didn’t have to.

The idea of someone standing her up for a date was ludicrous. Her bright-red, pouty lips and long dark hair revived his dormant senses. He took a seat at the end of the bar closest to where she sat. If nothing else, he could chance an occasional glance and daydream about what it would be like to make love to her.

He’d just ordered a scotch, neat, when he sensed someone standing beside him.

“You wouldn’t happen to be Carl, would you?”

Noah glanced over his shoulder and came face to face with the woman. He turned slightly to get a better look. Up close, she was astonishingly beautiful, from her deep-set, chocolate-brown eyes, to her pink-tinged cheeks, to those luscious lips.

“No,” he said, “I’m not. Unfortunately.”

She smiled, and her cheeks darkened a deeper shade of rose. “Oh,” she responded. “Sorry I bothered you.”

“No bother. You’re welcome to join me if you don’t want to sit alone. At least until Carl gets here.”

A look of relief washed over her face, and she slid onto the stool next to his. “I’m pretty sure I’ve been stood up.”

“Well then, Carl’s a fool.” He shot her a grin. “Blind date?”

“Sort of,” she admitted.

“What does ‘sort of’ mean exactly?”

She shook her head, her gaze fixed on the top of the mahogany bar. “It’s complicated.”

When had a blind date become something other than a blind date?

He stuck out his hand. “I’m Noah, by the way. Noah Carpenter.” She put her hand in his, the simple touch of her soft skin against his palm bringing his entire body to full alert.

“I’m Jayne Willis.”

“Nice to meet you, Jayne. What’s so complicated? Either you know this Carl fellow, or someone’s set you up on a blind date.” When she just shrugged, he added, “I know a few of my friends have set me up with some pretty disastrous results.”

She let out a long sigh. “It wasn’t a friend. It was a service, a specialized dating service.”

“Like a matching service?” he asked, a slight cringe running through him at the thought of ever having to rely on a dating app to find a woman.

“It’s not a find-your-soulmate type of dating app.” She glanced from side to side and lowered her voice. “It’s just for…uh…you know…sex. One night only, no expectations.”

He nearly choked on his drink. By the time he stopped coughing, his eyes were watering, and Jayne, bless her sexy soul, was laughing hysterically. “Just sex?” he said as soon as he could catch his breath.

She nodded and pursed her lips to hold in another laugh. “Yes, just sex.”

The thought of volunteering to take Carl’s place sat perched on the tip of his tongue. He wrestled with making an outright offer, wondering if the boldness of it would scare her way. So instead, he went with, “That’s some dating service.”

A New Sexy Short from Nancy Fraser - TRUST ME

Nancy Fraser's hot new release, TRUST ME, book 2 in the Lusty Liaisons series, released on July 20, 2020. I love the premise of this series - a dating service for fixing people up with their sexual matches. If they find a life partner, that's simply a bonus! Book 1 in the series is TOUCH ME, and both short, erotic romances are offered for the enticing price of .99 cents. Welcome Nancy!

Blurb:

Will this mis-matched couple discover they have more in common than just a single night of steaming-hot sex?

Tax consultant Katherine Weller isn't ready for a relationship after a divorce that left her empty. But when her best friend suggests she set up a sex-only date through Lusty Liaisons, a unique and exclusive dating service, she's uncertain but intrigued.

Maybe a hot romp with a sexy, younger man is exactly what she needs to take that confident first step into her new life as a single woman.

Excerpt:

Monday came and went. Tuesday...nothing. By Wednesday, Katherine wanted nothing more than to bury herself beneath a mound of blankets and stay there until her death. Or her eightieth birthday, whichever came first. By then, she’d be over the embarrassment of not being chosen for a night of uncomplicated, albeit hot, sex.

Lillie’s daily request for a progress report wasn’t helping matters.

Katherine’s cell dinged—a sure sign Lillie was sending her another message of encouragement. After pouring herself a second glass of Cakebread Chardonnay, Katherine picked up her phone, ran her fingertips across the lock screen, and stabbed the blinking icon.

You have a request.

Katherine double checked the sender’s name. Lusty Liaisons.

Damn! Hands shaking, she opened the email.

You’ve made a sexy match!

A request for contact was received from Aaron Blake. Mr. Blake is offering a fun-filled night at the Hudson Inn, Somerville, for this coming Saturday beginning at eight in the evening. If you decide to accept, please respond to this email. We will make the arrangements and confirm within twenty-four hours.

Click the link below to read Aaron’s profile.

She re-read the email twice before finally clicking on the profile link.

Aaron Blake, age thirty-two. Six-foot-two, two-hundred ten pounds. Occupation: government contractor. Sexual preferences: almost anything goes, although not into bondage.

Her gaze shot back to the top of the profile as it had at least a dozen times. Aaron Blake’s  photo stared back at her. His crooked smile taunted her, as if daring her to ignore him. A thin scar ran from the corner of his right eye and down the side of his face, yet it wasn’t disfiguring in the least. If anything, it drew her attention to his deep-set, brown eyes and long lashes. His dark hair was peppered with a touch of gray. A hint of stubble shadowed his square jaw.

All-in-all, he was gorgeous. And no doubt able to get any woman he wanted. What could he possibly want with a woman ten years his senior?

Before she could lose her nerve, she pressed the reply key, checked the box that said “accept,” and hit the send button.

Reflections of You - Crave Club#2 by Marie Tuhart

Marie Tuhart returns to talk about, REFLECTIONS OF YOU, the second book in her Crave Club series. We also get to know her better when she answers five quick questions. Welcome Marie!

Reflections of You Crave Club #2

Blurb:

Engaged couple Paige Thomas and Tanner Adams enjoy a little kink both inside and outside of Club Crave. But lately, Paige has been pulling away from Tanner, and he's determined to discover why before it's too late. Game night at the club fits his plans perfectly to push Paige to her limits to save their relationship.

Excerpt:

A bell sounded, and Tanner turned his attention to the stage. Master Jason made his announcement, and Chris was the first to draw his task for game night.
Then came his turn. Tanner took a deep breath and strode up to the stage. He dipped his hand into the box, pulled out a piece of paper, and opened it. Take your D/s relationship to a new level, respect hard limits, but push those you can. Enjoy yourselves and indulge in your fantasies. Please see a DM for instructions on where you will play.

Tanner turned away from the stage and glanced over at Paige. She was staring at him, her blue eyes wide. Olivia stood slightly behind Paige and stared at him hard, then she pulled the fabric of her dress away from her body and pointed to Paige.

He dipped his head in acknowledgement. He wasn’t exactly sure what Olivia was trying to tell him, but he had a feeling it had to do with the clothing he’d picked for Paige. He took Paige by the hand, led her over to the Dungeon Master, and handed him the task.

The DM read it, stared at them for a moment, then pointed over Tanner’s shoulder. “Room five,” he said.

Paige’s sigh of relief was loud, but Tanner didn’t say anything. Instead, he led her up the stairs. Room five wasn’t one they’d played in before. At the door, he turned the knob, pushed it open, and gestured for Paige to enter.

Quick 5

- Favorite color? Black and blue. I couldn’t pick just one. I wear both a lot. I don’t know why, those are just colors I gravitate towards.

- Coffee or tea? Both. I love coffee in the morning, but on a cold day I’ll have tea all day.

- What's your secret guilty pleasure? Going to the casino. I love playing slot machines, they take my mind off of everything. I also play games on my tablet, they help me relax.

- Country life or city life? Country life, now. I grew up in San Francisco. Right before I retired 7 years ago I researched moving to the Pacific Northwest. I found a new development going in and was able to customize my house. I’m pretty much in the country, but still close to major shopping.

- Party life or quiet dinner for two? Quiet dinner for two, that’s the best way to learn about the person in your life, or catch up with family.

New Release from Marie Tuhart!

Fellow Wild Rose Press author Marie Tuhart joins me today to talk about how her new release, erotic romance MORE OF YOU came to be. Thanks for being here, Marie!

Thank you for hosting me today, Jana.

When The Wild Rose Press asked for short stories in fall of 2018, I thought about it and went “why not.” The first short story I wrote didn’t make the cut, and it didn’t bother me. I understood why and it wasn’t really a story I could tell in under 7,000 words.

But I had already written four other short stories and sent them in advising my editor the four short stories had to go as a set. That’s because the stories were entwined with each other.

I have four couples who are in various stages of their relationship when they all meet up for game night at Club Crave.

Each story follows the couple on their romantic and sexual journey into their relationship and life choices.

And this leads me into what I write. I write Erotic Romance. Some people have the misconception that my writing is nothing but a bunch of sex scenes. It’s not. My books at their core are romance. Yes, my characters have sex and it’s on the page. It’s a part of them and life.

My stories revolve around the hero and heroine, their romantic and sexual journey. Yes, the sexual journey plays an important part with the characters as they explore their wants and desires, but it is also a love story. They have fears and conflicts that they have to solve to get to the HFN/HEA (Happy For Now or Happy Ever After).  There are romantic scenes as well as some hot sex scenes. It is a character driven story with goals, motivations and conflicts.

One of the things I say about my books is “It’s all about her.” Because my books have a strong female lead and sometimes she goes after what she wants, and sometimes the hero has to show her the way.

More of You

Blurb:

Game night at Club Crave is heating up...

Up until now, Anna Carson's relationship with Chris Peterson has been strictly D/s play. He's had a vanilla girlfriend. Anna has respected that boundary, but the sexy Dom is no longer attached. Now, Anna is ready to be more than his submissive. Game night at Club Crave is the perfect place to make her move, if only she can face her fears and be bold enough to ask her Dom for more...

Excerpt:

A bell sounded, and Master Jason took to the small stage. The room went quiet.

“Good evening, friends, welcome to game night. You are the first fifteen couples who RSVPed to the event invitation.” Master Jason’s voice was loud and cheerful. “Tonight’s game comes with a twist.” He lifted a shoe-size box and shook it. “Inside this box are pieces of paper with your tasks for the game. All the items you will need to play tonight will be provided. The normal club safewords apply. Have an issue with the task? See me once everyone has chosen.”

“This sounds interesting,” Tanner said.

“Intriguing twist. That’s why we were told not to bring our play bags,” Chris said.

“You are not to share your task with others once you’ve drawn. You will read it, then get your submissive and follow the directions.” Master Jason looked out over the crowd. “Dom Chris, you are first.”

Pia Manning Contemplates The Sweet Spot

Please welcome author Pia Manning to Journeys with Jana. She's here to talk about the compromise writers sometimes have to make in order to sell their work. Do they write the book of their heart, or the book that will sell? Welcome Pia!

That Sweet Spot

The sweet spot. What is it?

The simplest definition I’ve run across is this: The sweet spot is a compromise between what an author wants to write, and what a publisher or reader will buy.

Publishers research what genres sell the most, who buys their books and how much their customers are willing to spend. Backed by hard sales numbers and marketing research the sweet spot is for them well defined. Publishers communicate the results of their marketing research through their submission guidelines. This is where the publisher lets writers know what kinds of books they’re interested in buying. There are other sales’ indicator such as reviews, best seller lists, best selling authors’ lists. I could go on, but why? You get it.

Writing can wreck an author emotionally. All that angst we as writers wade through has a cost associated with it. Every piece of literature we put forward, whether fictional or not, holds a little bit of us within it. One of the best parts of being an author is connecting with a reader through our work. Forming that bond keeps us going.

And this is what makes finding that sweet spot rife with problems. These issues may be as small as a pothole, or as large as a minefield. How much are we willing to compromise in order to sell our work? To make it attractive enough for someone to select and read?

If our stories embody ourselves, how do we handle knowing we’ve compromised? Have we cheated ourselves somehow? Maybe. But can we make that connection with a reader if no one reads our work?  The self-negotiations every author engages in while trying to find their sweet spot are often difficult and delicate. In the end, only that writer can decide how far they’re willing to go in order to make a sale.

And if it was worth it…

Blurb, STAR BRIDES: DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS:

Warrior Kadir stares at the woman before him. Could she be the one he's searching for? Needs? Will she accept him and warriors, Tero, Kobak and Bakur as her mates?

Janine Longo's desperate. She's got one chance to escape prison and that's Kadir. But, can she bond with four men? Love them?

Excerpt:
The nearer to home they were, the faster they walked. By the time they reached their street they were running. Kadir didn’t stop to assess the damage. He pushed through the remains of their front door. Blaster drawn he yelled, “Janine!”

The other men fanned out to check the rest of the house. Tero ran to the kitchen. Seeing the demolished back door, he headed straight for the cold storage cellar. He climbed, then slid down the ladder into the gloom. He too knew where every box and crate sat, as well as every nook and cranny. If Janine hid herself back here, Tero thought it would be where the darkness was complete. “Janine!” he shouted again. “It’s me. Tero! Janine!”

Tero stopped to listen. Hearing only his own heartbeat, he turned to leave. He and the others needed to start searching for her before the mob…Tero couldn’t think about it.

“Tero?” a soft, breathy voice called.

Relief flooding through him, he answered. “Janine! Where are you? You ok?”

“Yeah. I’m way up here. Give me a second to get down.”

Tero moved to the bottom of the ladder. “Hey! She’s down here! We’ll be right up!” he yelled. “Need any help getting down?” He held his arms out to her.

Kryssie Fortune and TAKEN AS THEIRS

Kryssie Fortune is my guest today, and she sat down for an interview with me. Her newest release is TAKEN AS THEIRS, and she tells us how she got the idea for the story. One thing I know about Kryssie is that she writes hot, hot, hot! Please welcome Kryssie Fortune.

Where did you get the idea for your new novel, Taken as Theirs?

I love to read and belonged to a literary group. We read Margret Atwood’s Handmaiden’s Tale.  and it got me thinking. I loved the idea of a world most women were infertile. That made them either commodities or treasures. Then the what if’s started.

What if the same disease that made the females of species infertile almost wiped out humanity?

What if the vampires, werewolves, and demons really lived among us?

What if the paranormal species became the dominant species?

And how would people cope in a post-apocalyptic world?

That was my starting premise for Taken as Theirs. It shows how three species survive and treat their women. That sounds very highbrow, but my book’s a hot, sexy action / adventure full of dominant werewolves and wicked vampires. I’ve never had a book in the Amazon top fifty twenty before, and so far, the reviews have been amazing. I’m very proud of Taken as Theirs.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read your book, Taken as Theirs?

I want Dane and Eli, my werewolf heroes, to be the reader’s best ever book boyfriends. I loved the characters with their mix of kindness, compassion, and sexual dominance.  My heroine’s sassy and full of fun, she’s submissive only to the werewolves she loves. She’s tiny but full of spirit, a natural problem solver.  Most of all, I want readers to think, “That was a great story.”

Did you always want to be a writer?

One of my friends claims I wanted to write a book when we were at school. I didn’t want it badly enough to do more than talk about it until my heart valve collapsed eighteen years ago. It was unexpected and potentially deadly. Fortunately, a wonderful surgeon gave me a bionic one. That’s when I reached for my dreams, picked up a pen, and started writing.

Do you have any words of advice to beginning writers?

Keep going and read Stephen King’s book, On Writing. Whatever genre you read, it will help.

How did you get started writing romance?

I never wanted to write anything else. I read romance novels of any genre. Like Marilyn Monroe, I like mine hot. That’s certainly what I write. The more I write, the sexier my stories get.

Do you write in the same place every day or do you like to change it up?

In winter, I write at the computer desk in the front room. In summer, I write in the garden shed. My wonderful husband has fit it out with a computer desk, blankets and rugs. It’s a little haven of quiet surrounded by tubs of flowers.

Tell us a bit about you. Where do you live, and how long have you been writing?

I retired to England’s Yorkshire coast three years ago. I spend time each day with my husband walking on the beach. In between, I love to cook. I’m pretty good at it, but I still have the odd disaster. I think that can be said of my first draft writing too. I spend forever editing and polishing a manuscript before it goes to my publisher. After that, my husband reads it. Then my lovely beta reader, Wendy checks it. You’d think it would be perfect, but my editor always finds bits I’ve missed. The one thing I’ve learned is never to be precious about my writing. I’m always grateful when a publisher accepts it.

If writing is your first passion, what is your second?

My husband and my family. We celebrated our ruby wedding three years ago, and I’d marry him again tomorrow. I have an adult son and daughter who I'm inordinately proud of. One’s something mysterious in international finance and one’s a head teacher. Thanks to them I have three grandchildren. Two boys I don’t see often enough as they live over 200 miles away and an eighteen-month old granddaughter.

What are your hobbies away from the computer?

I quiz with my husband and two good friends twice a week. A local bar has entertainment twice a week, and I can usually be found on their dance floor.

What did you want to be (occupation-wise) when you were a child?

At four, I wanted to be a gypsy. I loved that they had horses and dogs. Afterward, I wanted to be a rocket scientist. I have the physics A level to prove it.

How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

I have a fondness for sparky red-headed heroines. That said, they can’t all look the same. be red heads. I work out how they look before I start. My heroes often have scars, either physical or mental – as in PTSD. They are always muscular warriors who can hold their own in any situation.
Names are the hardest part for me. I often change them halfway though the story. In Taken as Theirs, Dane was going to be Cain until HE insisted on something better. Other times I look though lists of popular names from the year my character would have been born.

Cassie, in Taken as Theirs was different. I wanted her and her two younger sisters to have the names of ancient queens. (That’s for the possible follow up, though, so please don’t tell.) She’s named for Cassiopeia, the vain queen from Greek mythology. Later, I learned it’s also the name of a species of jellyfish! All I can say, is she’s made of steel not jelly.

As a breeder--one of the few fertile women left in a ruined, plague-ravaged world--Cassie would fetch a handsome price at auction, and selling her to the highest bidder was exactly what her captors had in mind... until two fearsome beasts decided to take her for themselves.

Eli and Dane have chosen Cassie for their mate, and when she makes a foolish attempt at escape she quickly ends up tearfully promising obedience as her bare bottom is soundly and shamefully punished. Her body's response to their stern dominance cannot be denied, however, and it isn't long before she is screaming out her intense, helpless pleasure as she is roughly and thoroughly claimed. But will Eli and Dane's pack accept a human girl or will Cassie be an outsider forever?

Publisher's Note: Taken as Theirs includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Excerpt:
Goosebumps covered Cassie’s flesh. Tingles raced between her legs, tiny electric sparks that warmed her blood. One kind word and her good intentions would crumble—just like her sisters’ chance of freedom if she told this drop-dead gorgeous pair about them.

What with the vampire auction and that nightmare descent of the cliff, she couldn’t take much more. Cassie had been a fool to think she could escape. Completely drained, she was at the werewolves’ mercy.

Her imagination worked overtime. Wolves were pack animals. Suppose they decided to share her around the crew? The vampires certainly would have, and she didn’t expect werewolves to behave any better.

She cowered when Eli pulled a knife, but he sawed through the wet rope binding her to his brother. Her legs folded, and only Dane’s strong grip kept her upright. Sheaving his knife, Eli swept her into his arms.

He gave her his best Pepsodent-white smile. “Foolish little princess, so eager to return to the vampires who will abuse you. You’re safe here, despite the unconventional start to our friendship.”

Like a half-drowned kitten, she dripped water onto his trousers. He smelled of summer breezes and crops ripening in the fields. So cold her teeth had stopped chattering, she let go of her fears and let Eli take charge. Heat flowed from his chest to hers, but it wasn’t enough. She felt like an ice cube lost at the back of a freezer.

He carried her through a narrow galley, and into the captain’s cabin. She’d expected twin bunks and a tiny space. Instead, this room reminded her of Nelson’s cabin on the HMS Victory. The back wall consisted of window panes, giving her a view of the distant cliffs. The view fascinated and delighted her but the cabin’s four-poster bed terrified her. It covered more than half the room and had enough room for three if not four.

Dane pulled towels from a trunk then tossed her one of his brother’s jumpers. “Get dry, princess then get into bed and warm up. We’re going to lock you in while we get underway in earnest, but we’ll be back with hot stew and a hot coffee soon.”

After living on half rations for a week, her mouth watered at the thought of a decent meal. That these dominant werewolves cared for her welfare stunned her. Then they offered her a coffee. Utter luxury.

Emotions set in, and tears filled her eyes. She broke into a cold sweat that turned her forehead clammy. She’d never felt so weary in her life—not even when she’d swum marathons.

Dane lifted her chin and gazed into her eyes. “Don’t cry, little human. You’re safe now.”

The intensity in his gaze felt like a shot of energy for her soul. It made her feel hot and tingly inside. She craved his touch, and maybe his kiss. A fresh set of shivers beset her. This time, they were more about her forbidden attraction for the werewolves than the cold.

About Kryssie Fortune:

Kryssie lives by the beach and loses track of time when she writes. Her days are full of dashing regency rakes, former soldiers so handsome they make her drool, and the sexiest werewolves ever. The odd vampire makes it in there too, but when he does, he’s drop dead gorgeous.
Her pet hates are unhappy endings and cliff hangers. She guarantees you won’t find either in her books. Her books sizzle with sensual heat, but story always comes before sex. Even when part of a series, her books can be read as stand-alone romance.

Kryssie Fortune: WICKEDLY USED #EggcerptExchan

Kryssie Fortune is my #EggcerptExchan guest today. She writes hot erotic romance, and her newest release, WICKEDLY USED, is no exception. WICKEDLY USED  released February 17, 2018. Here's Kryssie Fortune to tell us a little about her book. Take it away, Kryssie!

Blurb, WICKEDLY USED:

While he is no stranger to pleasurable company from ladies of the night, Major Richard Rothbury of the royal dragoons is not the kind of man who will stand idly by as a woman is taken against her will, and when he witnesses a disreputable cad attempting to force himself on a girl in a back alley, he does not hesitate to intervene.

But after the grateful young woman offers herself to Rothbury, he is shocked to discover that not only was she no harlot, she was a maiden and he has deflowered her. Furious at the girl’s scandalous behavior and her carelessness with her own safety, Rothbury chastises her soundly.

Though she is due to inherit one of the largest fortunes in England, the fact that she cannot touch the money until she marries or turns thirty has kept Elizabeth completely at the mercy of her cruel uncle, and for years she has been treated as if she were a servant. Her encounter with Lord Rothbury is by far the most exciting thing that has ever happened to her, but while he shows great concern for her safety, he refuses to believe that she is anything more than a serving girl.

Despite having made it clear that he doesn’t consider a match between them to be possible, when Elizabeth disobeys him Rothbury proves more than ready to strip her bare, punish her harshly, and then enjoy her beautiful body in the most shameful of ways. But can she dare to hope that he will one day make her his wife, or is she destined to spend her life being wickedly used?

Publisher’s Note: Wickedly Used: A Dark Regency Romance includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Excerpt:

Hidden behind their masks, the patrons behaved too freely. Druid’s Walk became a place for pleasure and indiscreet sex. Seeing that serving girl go there alone roused his protective instincts. He needed to ensure her safety, but it took him a while to make his way through the crowd.

His size always made him stand out, and tonight, he drew predatory looks from some of the ton’s ladies. He’d been immune to women’s charms since his first love ruined his life. He didn’t understand why that serving girl called to him on a primal level.

Finally, he reached Druid’s Walk. Looking far ahead, he saw a group of Cits accost her; he clenched his fists and started toward them. Those louts needed to learn better manners. Just as he approached, she broke free and vanished into the night. The silly chit ran further into the Walk’s notorious depths.
Five drunken idiots had harried the woman who fascinated him. He released the cold fury that lived inside him and strode toward them. Menace dripped from his gaze. Dangerous and deadly, he knew five to one weren’t bad odds… for him. He’d honed his fighting skills during his seven years fighting in the Peninsular War. Teaching drunks who thought they were invincible some manners came naturally to him.

He tapped the nearest one on the shoulder. “You need to treat ladies with more respect.”

The drunk said nothing, just flailed his arms wildly, trying to hit the dragoon’s head. Sidestepping, Rothbury planted his right fist in the drunk’s face and his left in his gut. The man doubled over and threw up.

The other four rushed him in a group. Rothbury’s first punch broke a man’s nose. His second dislocated another’s jaw. One kick and another drunk doubled over on the ground. Two more punches and the last two sprawled on the mud at his feet.

Breathing steady and even, Rothbury towered over them. If they’d have been in his unit, they’d have been on a charge. Tonight, he’d leave them sprawled on the pathway and follow the blonde who’d enchanted him.

The need to possess her clawed at his soul. Her beauty drove him wild and turned his balls blue. Not that he could afford a mistress or even a couple of hours with a whore. If she was the innocent she seemed, he’d see her safely home. But he wanted her to be wicked and willing.

By the time he found her again, she’d attracted Lord Dawlish’s attention. That man’s reputation was so dark his peers had blackballed him at White’s.

1 Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

My heroine, Lady Elizabeth Blayneton is an heiress, but she can’t inherit until she marries or turns thirty. Her uncle and guardian is determined she will marry his slack-mouthed son, but she’d rather not marry at all than wed him. Only she doesn’t want to die a virgin.

2 Tell us about your hero.

Brigade Major Lord Rothbury carries the wounds his first love inflicted when she threw him over for his father. To silence the gossip, his father packed him off to fight in the Peninsula war and squandered the family fortune on his new bride. When the current Lord Rothbury inherited, there was nothing but mortgages and debts. He’s been trying to put things right and provide for his sisters ever since. Waterloo looms, and he’s recalled to Wellington’s staff. Then there’s this serving girl who keeps ending up in his bed, only wedding her would cause another scandal and ruin his sisters’ future.

3 What genre are your books?

I write romance. Any sort. Paranormal or contemporary. Wickedly Used is my first Regency Romance, although it’s darker than many.

4.      What draws you to this genre?

I write the books I like to read. There’s always a strong plot, with lots of adventure. Then there’s the sex. My pet hate is cliff hangers. Each book in either of my series can be read as stand-alone romance. Add in that I’m a sucker for a happy-ever-after, and you’ve got my writing style.

5.       What is your favorite motivational phrase.

It’s one of Mohamed Ali’s catchphrases. “If my head can conceive it and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.”

6 How do you select the names of your characters?

I try to pick a name that fits the world they live in. My paranormal heroines are often named for herbs and flowers. For my contemporary characters, I look at popular names in the year they were born. Sometimes they shout at me that I’ve named them wrongly, but that doesn’t happen often. The heroine in my book Claimed by Vampire, Seduced by the Werewolf went through three name changes before I got her name right.

More about Kryssie Fortune:

Kryssie reads everything and anything, from literary fiction to sizzling romance. Her earliest memory is going to the library with her mother. She can’t have been more than two at the time. Reading, especially when a book’s hot and explicit, is more than a guilty pleasure. It’s an obsession.

Kryssie loves to visit historic sites, from Hadrian’s wall to Regency Bath. The first book she fell in love with was Georgette Heyer’s The Unkown Ajax. After that, she devoured every regency book she could. After a while, they went out of fashion, but part of Kryssie’s psyche lives in in in Regency London. She longs to dance quadrilles and flirt behind fans. Of course, Kryssie’s heroines do far more than flirt.

Kryssie lives in Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast –about thirty miles from Whitby, where Bram Stoker wrote Dracula. She enjoys gardening, travel, and socializing with her author friends. You’d be surprised how many erotic romance authors live in the North of England.

Kathleen Rowland - One Night in Havana #EggcerptExcha

#EggcerptExchange One Night in Havana in the City Nights #eroticromance series from #Tirgearr Publishing.

Kathleen wants to share a funny incident that ended up in this book.  This is the scene about a bilge pump on a sinking boat. Her date was so gallant, but his boat was sinking. And yes, it made her giggle.

She picked the setting of Cuba for a reason. She wanted to trap her proud Cuban professor there. He survives because of his flamboyant personality and opportunistic nature. Cuba is a fascinating mid-century time warp. The 1950s cars still run due to amazing mechanics.  No matter how hardworking, Cubans exist under strict communistic rules such as the inability to move from one section of the country to another. Without free-enterprise they can’t make much money.  If they do leave, they can only bring ten thousand dollars with them, but this would be a huge amount of money for most Cubans. Big business such as cigar manufacture is government-run.

One Night in Havana—blurb:

A desperate competition and sizzling attraction leads to dangerous desire.

New York Marine biologist Veronica “Roni” Keane is attending the Havana Bay Conference in Cuba. Tomorrow only one grant will be awarded which will provide the winner with professional recognition, resources for a project, and living expenses for two years. She hopes to continue her deceased father’s work, but smooth operator, Carlos Montoya, has won many grants in the past.

Carlos, a freelancer for the Havana Port Authority, works to help protect Havana’s reputation as a bastion of safety. As international travelers flock to the island, attracted by its 1950’s time-warp and colonial architecture, the drug business is running rampant, particularly on Roni’s cruise ship. Something’s not right, and when her scuba tanks are tampered with, Carlos brings in the military police to investigate. For her safety, he keeps her close, but he craves her body.

Their attraction leads to a fun night with a bit of kink. But Roni finds herself in more trouble than she bargained for when the criminals blame her for alerting the military police and come looking for her. Can Roni trust Carlos to protect her? Will she stay in Havana if Carlos wins the coveted grant, or kiss her lover goodbye?

Excerpt-- Chapter One

“Why, Veronica Keane.” A voice heavy with a Spanish accent drawled from behind her. “A dive bar?” A taunting tsk. “What do we have? A slumming New Yorker?”

She stiffened and closed her eyes. She knew that voice and its owner, Dr. Carlos Montoya, a finalist like her, competing for the same damn grant at the biggest Cephalopoda conference of the decade. Her heart pitter-pattered against her ribs. To turn toward him would intimate distress, or worse yet, weakness. She wouldn’t fail to win this grant, not when she was a final contender. “I like this funky little place.” Sia Macario Café, smack in the center of Havana, allowed her to observe locals and their daily lives.

“You need to eat with all the mojitos you’ve downed.” The big tease wasn’t counting. This was her first drink, but his rumbling, sexy timbre hinted at all kinds of dark, hot promises. She’d rubbed shoulders with the Cuban scientist all week. This splendid specimen of Latin male brought on a physical ache that punched low.

A flare-up stirred fear. For her own good, she needed to resist. “I ordered camarones enchiladas.” By now she knew the menu on the chalkboard by heart. She tipped her head back to whiff grilled shrimp soon to arrive in sofrito sauce with fried sweet plantains.

“The flan is good. Just like my abuela makes.”

“I bet. Your grandmother would be happy to hear that,” she said, knowing he brought out the best in most people. Two days ago he'd invited her and a handful of others scuba diving. The chance to ogle him had been one of the perks. He’d worn nothing but swim trunks, his bare chest on display. Every glistening muscle was finely etched. Not a drop of fat on him. Since he’d not given her the time of day, she’d checked him out without him noticing.

The hard-bodied host had led the way toward habitats of soft-bodied creatures. To find where invertebrates lived was never an easy task. Octopuses squeezed into narrow passages of coral for protection and gave females a place to keep their eggs. She’d discovered the remains of a few meals nearby. Octopuses scattered rocks and shells to help them hide.

This grant meant so much to her and no doubt to him as well. Veronica mindlessly toyed with the gold necklace around her neck, but anxiety crackled through her brain. Unlike this man of action, she lacked the flamboyant personality necessary to talk people into things. Carlos had that ability. He'd made friends with judges on board while she’d conversed with an older woman about a box of scones made with Cuban vanilla cream.

That day the wind had picked up to a gale force, and this woman named Bela with Lucille Ball red hair needed help walking to her home. The half mile down the seaside promenade, The Malecón, had provided her with time to practice her Spanish. Turned out Bela was Carlos’s grandmother. She’d worked as a maid when the Castro government came to power. When private homes were nationalized, titles were handed over to the dwelling occupants. Bela owned a crumbling home in the respected Verdado district and rented out rooms.

What Veronica detested about Carlos was his abnormal level of talent for schmoozing. Not that he wasn't charismatic; he drew her like a powerful magnet with emotions hard to untangle. Why was a self-assured woman who ran her own life thinking about a man who commanded everyone around him?

She inhaled a breath and turned around on the barstool, caught fast by a gut punch of Carlos Montoya in the flesh. She sighed and surrendered to the tendrils of want sliding up between her thighs.

Tall and muscular, his lush dark hair curled to his collar giving him a wild, roguish appearance. His face was lean and chiseled. His mouth full and tempting. His eyes the smoky-gray of a grass fire and fringed with black lashes as dense as paintbrushes. He smiled. A faint hint of mockery curved his mouth, a sensual mouth she imagined to be either inviting or cruel. Or both at the same time when he leaned over a woman with a diamond-hard gleam in his dark eyes while she drowned with pleasure. She fought a fierce desire to run her hand across his broad chest, tip her face upward, and…

His breath tickled her face.

Not going there. She blinked and forced her mind to focus. Carlos Montoya was not the kind of man you lost focus around. But that image of putting her mouth full on his and peeling away his shirt once introduced in her mind was impossible to expunge. Pointless even to try.

He was an intimidating blend of intellect and sexy danger. Both qualities had her leaning back against the bar’s edge. If it weren’t for him, she’d have a chance at winning the grant.

His lips twitched. “You’re staying on one of the cruise ships, am I right?” He rolled up the sleeves of his linen jacket to reveal a dusting of manly hair.

”Yes." Her cabin served as her hotel room while attending the January meetings with perfect high-seventies temperatures. His eyes locked with hers. She willed herself to move and yet she remained seated, clutching heat between her legs, a wetness so intense that her breath stalled in her chest while her heart hammered faster. Soon she’d return to freezing New York City.

“So, Bonita, give.” He slid onto the bar stool next to her. “What brings you down from a lofty ship to grace us lowly Cubans with your presence?”

Bonita. Pretty lady was not an endearment coming from the mouth curved in a taunting smile, but not a slight either. Not with his deep, melodic voice speaking words as if he knew secrets about her. What secrets did he know? Would he pry into her personal life? She doubted this bad-boy college professor acknowledged boundaries.

“Just drinks and dinner.” She scrambled for composure. “Aren’t we attending a world-class conference? I find the local population to be friendly and kind. That’s not slumming.”

The bartender set down a saoco. “Hope you like it, senorita.”

“Gracias,” she said. “Very nice, served in a coconut.”

“Ah, the saoco,” Carlos said. “Rum, lime juice, sugar, and ice. The saoco,” he repeated, disbelief heavy in his words. “Um. Wow. Once used as a tonic for prisoners of the revolution.”

“Medicinal?” She couldn’t help it. She chuckled and sounded as if a rusty spoon had scraped her throat raw, but it was genuine. The warm glow in its wake was welcome and needed.

He leaned an elbow on the bar, his beer bottle with the green-and-red Cristal label dangling between his fingers. “Be careful with that one.” He dipped his head toward the front door as if he needed to go somewhere soon.

That fast, the glow snuffed out. She cleared her throat and gripped the fuzzy surface of the coconut container.

He placed a five-peso coin with a brass plug on the counter and whirled it. The spinning motion mirrored a dizzying attraction going on in low parts of her belly.

Excerpt:

Howard had been talking nonstop for twenty minutes.  Each time Petey thought she’d found the opportunity to extricate herself, he continued his rambling, while edging ever closer, invading her personal space, and chatting about his work and his home in New Jersey.  He seemed to be one of those individuals who was completely inept at picking up on social cues.
She’d just worked up the gumption to simply excuse herself the next time he came up for air, when she heard a familiar voice.
There you are, darling!”  Nik swooped in, handing her a glass of wine.  “I’m so sorry I’m late.  Will you ever forgive me?”  He wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her cheek.
Stunned, Petey stammered a bit.  “Um, yes.  Well…darling, yes, you certainly are late.  What’s up with that?  I’ve been waiting for you.”
“I know.  But traffic was a nightmare, what with the rain.  You just wouldn’t believe it.”  Nik turned to Howard.  “Who’s your friend?”  He smiled pleasantly at the confused man.
“Oh, sorry.  Nik, this is Howard.  Howard, meet Nik.”
Howard worked his mouth, but was blissfully silent.
Nik reached to shake his hand.  “So nice to meet you.  If you’ll excuse us, I need to make up for lost time.  Come, darling.”
He grasped Petey’s hand and led her to the opposite side of the gallery.  When they reached a quiet corner, he turned and smiled at her.
She gave a relieved laugh.  “Oh, my God, for the second time tonight, you saved my bacon.”
Nik laughed, too.  “The exasperation on your face said that you needed rescuing.  Who was he anyway?”
“Some guy that my friend Jules thought I should meet.  I mean, he’s nice enough, but he had absolutely no sense of personal space.  And he would notstop talking.  Sheesh!”
“He’s probably just shy in the presence of such a pretty woman.”  Nik’s blue eyes sparkled.
Petey rolled her eyes.  “Yes, I’m sure that’s it,” she said sarcastically.  “I guess you ditched your business dinner?”
Nik nodded. “I did.”
She eyed him curiously.  “What kind of business are you in?”
He paused a beat.  “I’m in international finance and development.”
Warmth flooded her face, and she knew she was blushing.  A sheepish smile curled her lips.  “I have no idea what that means.”
He smiled, too.  “I travel and meet with business people, mostly, occasionally politicians, and we discuss ways to improve our national economies, and ways to assist developing economies as well.”
“Oh.  I’m sure Jules would understand completely.  She has a sharp business mind.  I’m just so,” she gave a self-deprecating chuckle, “right-brained.”
She fanned herself lightly with her hand.  “So, you’d had enough of finances and development for one night?”
Nik nodded agreeably.  “I’ve worked all day.  As I sat listening to more business conversation, all I could think was that I’d like to attend the gallery opening of a promising young sculptor.”
Petey’s eyes sparkled mischievously.  “Well, if I hear of any, I’ll let you know.”  They both laughed together.
“I just watched your video.  Such an interesting way to introduce yourself to patrons.”
“Oh, that.”  Petey blushed.  “Jules flew out to Montana a couple of months ago.  She hired a film crew to follow me for a day, do interviews and stuff.  Then they just put it together.”
He regarded her curiously, eyes sparkling.  “What are the chances you’d give me a guided tour of this incredible exhibit?”
She pretended to consider his request.  “Well, you did see to it that I was put back together after being blasted by that tidal wave.   And, you rescued me from being talked to death by a close-talking dentist.  I’d say your odds are pretty good.”  She laughed.  “I think bringing me a glass of wine put you over the top, though.”
Nik laughed, too.  “Lucky for me, then.”
“Lucky for you.  Okay, let’s take a tour.”

Favorite Scene

My new book, Chasing Ordinary, is the modern adult fairy tale I’ve always wanted to read.

Red-haired Petey Cavanaugh has left her Montana ranch to sell her sculptures at a New York gallery show organized by her best friend.

Nik has been traveling for nearly a month.  Now, he’s in New York on business, and can’t wait to finally go home.

Their worlds unexpectedly collide one rainy Manhattan night, in a way that changes them both forever.

Busy with her sheep and her art, Petey’s not the kind of girl to waste time with celebrity gossip.  Which is why she has no idea that Nik is actually Europe’s most eligible prince.

Nik is enchanted; she’s his first-ever taste of ordinary.  But she has to find out, eventually.

I love the scene where the two first meet.  (Warning for a bit of profanity.)

Nik peered grimly out the window at the passing grey tableau as the Mercedes made its way uptown toward the exclusive Empire Club.  Dalton Rigby’s great-great grandfather had been a founding member, as the man had been careful to point out every time Nik had ever met him.

At least the food will be good, he consoled himself.  Mentally, he went over his talking points as the city passed by in a gloomy blur.

A flash of color on the sidewalk caught his focus.  Ahead, a woman in a bright red dress was attempting to hail a cab in the pouring rain.  As his car pulled alongside her, he watched in slow motion as a spray of water completely doused her.

“Stop the car!” he shouted.

The driver eyed him in the rearview mirror.

“Stop the car,” he repeated.

“But sir,” Jorgen protested from his seat beside Nik.

Shrugging, the driver stopped, causing the car behind them to slam on its brakes and honk loudly.

Nik was already halfway out of the car.  “Go around the block,” he called over his shoulder as he stepped out into the rain, slamming the door behind him.

The woman was still standing where she’d been when the Mercedes’ front wheel had torn through a deep puddle, spraying her with filthy runoff.  Nik made his way to her, ignoring the rain that pelted him as he walked.

“I’m terribly sorry.  Are you alright?”

She stood shaking from cold, red hair matted to her head, black streams of mascara running down her face like cracks in fine china.  “I’m s-s-s-soaked!” she shrieked.

“Again, I’m so sorry.”  Nik’s expression was contrite.  He shrugged out of his suit jacket and wrapped it around her.  She was tiny, and the jacket nearly swallowed her whole.  He glanced around.  “Is your apartment near here?”

She shook her head.  “I’m locked out.  And I’m unbelievably late.  I can’t go like this.  And I can’t get back into the fucking apartment!  Fuck!”

“My car is coming back around the block.  I’ll give you a ride to wherever you need to—“

At that moment, a boxy delivery truck hit the same puddle, spraying them both.  They gasped in unison.  Momentarily blinded by the wall of water, Nik sputtered and swiped at his face.  “Bloody hell!”

He looked down at the woman whose eyes were impossibly wide with surprise.  “Here comes my car now.  Come with me.  I’m staying at the Plaza.  We’ll call ahead and have the stylist meet us.  Once we’re both cleaned up, I’ll take you where you need to go.”

She looked up at him in alarm.  “I’m not going to your hotel with you!”

“No, I don’t mean…  I realize how inappropriate it sounds, but I promise, I only mean to help.”  He held up his hands in surrender.  “Clearly you can’t stay here.  And you can’t go to wherever it is you were going, not like this.”

He aimed for a reassuring smile.  “The services of the spa and salon will be at your disposal.  And I know St. James will have something for you to wear.”

He watched as she considered her options.  “I feel responsible.  Please let me make things right.”

The black Mercedes pulled up to the sidewalk and the driver walked around to open the back door.  “Please,” he pleaded softly.

The woman drew a shaky breath.  “Okay.  Thank you,” she said quietly.

Jorgen slid out of the back seat and moved to the passenger side of the front.  Nik motioned for the woman to get in, and he climbed in beside her.  The driver returned to his seat and pulled out into traffic.

“Jorgen, call St. James and tell him to meet us at the underground entrance.  Ms.—“  He looked to the woman.

“Oh, Cavanaugh.  Petey Cavanaugh.”  At his befuddled expression she added, “It’s a long story.”

Nik frowned.  “Ms. Cavanaugh is to have whatever services she needs.  When she’s ready, we’ll take her where she needs to go.”

“Yes, sir,” Jorgen responded, taking his phone out of his pocket.

“Thank you,” Petey said sheepishly.  “I’d better call my friend.”

She dialed a number.  “Yeah, it’s me.”  There was a short pause.  “No, I’m not almost to the gallery.  I’ll tell you all about it when I get there.”

Another pause.  “I know, seriously, I do!  Nobody would rather be there right now than I would, but I forgot the umbrella, and I forgot the key, and I’m a total wreck right now, completely soaked to the skin.”

She seemed to listen for a moment.  “I know, but I can’t help it.  I’m headed to the Plaza.  I’ll get cleaned up, and then I’ll be right there.”

Nik watched as she eyed him quickly.  “I don’t know.  Some guy,” she whispered.  There was another pause, and Nik could hear an agitated voice on the other end, although he couldn’t make out the words.

“Okay, Jules, I’m hanging up now.  I’ll let you know when I’m on my way.”  She stabbed at her phone and put it back in the small silver bag she was carrying.

She looked back at him sheepishly.  “My friend.”

“I truly am sorry.  You said you’re late?”

She nodded.  “It’s a gallery opening.  I’m supposed to be there,” she glanced at her watch, “twenty-two minutes ago.”

“I’m late for dinner myself.  At least gallery openings usually run for several hours.  Surely it won’t matter if you’re a bit late,” he said reasonably.

“It’s my show.  It looks kind of bad for the guest of honor not to be there.”

Nik was intrigued.  “You’re an artist.  What is your medium?”

“Sculpture.  I do welded steel and glass pieces.”

He squinted, picturing the petite, feminine woman using a welding torch to bend steel to her will.

“We’re here, sir,” Jorgen announced, interrupting his thoughts.  The car pulled through a security gate into an underground garage.  As it eased up to a pair of double glass doors, Colin St. James stepped out to greet them.

“Holy crap on a cracker,” he exclaimed as first Nik, then Petey, climbed out of the back of the car.  “What on God’s green earth happened to you?”

“It’s raining,” Nik replied succinctly.  “This is Ms. Cavanaugh.  She’s late to her own gallery opening, and obviously, she can’t go like that.  Please see to it that she’s ready in about twenty minutes.  Will that be possible?”

“Twenty minutes?  Are you kidding me?  They don’t call me ‘the miracle worker’ for nothing.”  He scanned Petey up and down.  “Although this might be my greatest challenge yet,” he said under his breath.

She glared up at him through wet lashes.

Nik turned to Petey.  “I’m going upstairs to get cleaned up.  I’ll check on you when I’m ready.”

She nodded shyly, shrugging off his suit jacket and handing it to him.  “Um, thank you.”
He nodded to Colin and turned to head to the elevator.

Colin took Petey by the hand.  “Okay, sweetie, let’s see what we can do.”
