Why we love costumes at Halloween #SnarkologyHalloweenHop

Welcome to the Snarkology Halloween Hop! There are over 70 participants in the hop, and with every blog offering a prize, there are plenty of chances to win. You can check out the e-books I'm giving away in the Rafflecopter at the end of this post. As well, there are tons of terrific hop-wide prizes. Enter the hop-wide Rafflecopter by clicking here .

Check out the Snarkology Halloween Hop landing page for more information about the prizes and for a list of participating author blogs. Happy Halloween!

Why We Love Halloween Costumes

Full disclosure: I haven’t worn a Halloween costume since I was a kid. I’d rather hand out candy at the door and enjoy the costumes of the neighborhood kids. When my daughters were young, I had fun sewing costumes for them and painting their faces. I even dress up my dog in her cowboy outfit every Halloween (which she hates). But to dress up myself? No, thank you.

Cowboy Lou
Since something like $1.2 billion is spent by American adults on their own Halloween costumes, I’m probably in the minority. According to Psychology Today, there are several good reasons why adults like to dress up:

1. For sheer enjoyment of the experience – If dressing up in a costume makes you happy, go for it. End of story.

2. To express your creativity – Some people like coming up with a creative and unique costume, sometimes more than actually wearing the costume. It’s a way of learning about ourselves. European social scientists Janine Fron and her colleagues point out, “dress-up provides the opportunity for transformative play, for in dressing up and taking on new roles, we learn more about ourselves.” To see some truly creative Halloween costumes, click here.

3. To try out a new identity – Halloween is one of the few opportunities adults have to pretend to be someone or something else. That’s probably why superhero costumes are perennial favorites.

4. To fit in with your circle of friends – If all your friends are dressing up and going out on the town on Halloween, why would you want to stay home? Celebrating with a group can be fun and can strengthen the ties between you.

But hey, if you’re like me and the thought of wearing a costume at Halloween makes you uncomfortable, it’s okay. It probably means you’re an introvert (also like me). Psychologist Sophia Dembling says “costume parties are just one big audience participation event, and audience participation is an introvert’s nightmare.”

Yep. I hear you, Sophia.

So celebrate Halloween your way, and have fun on your own terms.

I'm giving away one e-copy each of my romantic suspense SEEING THINGS, my humorous paranormal BURNING LOVE, and my romantic comedy RESCUE ME. Enter the Rafflecopter draw at the bottom of this post for your chance to win!

Blurb for SEEING THINGS:

When psychic Leah McKenna “sees” the abduction of a small boy, she knows she must help find him, no matter the danger to herself. David Logan, the boy’s uncle, doesn’t believe in psychic phenomenon. He believes Leah knows who kidnapped his nephew, and plans to stick close to her to discover the truth. As they search for Jeremy they uncover truths about themselves and the way they feel about each other. Can Leah convince him her visions, and her love for him, are real before time runs out for all of them?

Excerpt:

David closed his eyes in anguish, barely stifling a groan. They'd been in such a hurry that he hadn't even told Jeremy he loved him that morning.

Leah stooped to retrieve a couple of plastic toys left abandoned on the floor. She stared at the bright red brontosaurus and the purple stegosaurus as if waiting to hear them speak. David straightened the unmade bed to give himself something to do, his hand brushing against a lump under the blanket. He pulled Jeremy's well-worn Teddy bear from its hiding place.

"This is one of his favorites," he said. "Jeremy calls him Mr. Cuddles. He's had him since he was a baby. He never goes to sleep without him. He'll be missing him..."

David's hands clenched into fists. Rage poured through him. What kind of monster takes a child away from his mother, from everything that's familiar to him? When he got his hands on the bastard who did this, he'd make him pay.

His gaze collided with Leah's. He sensed she read the chaotic thoughts that tumbled through his brain. Her warm brown eyes were full of compassion and understanding, and for a moment he almost forgot his belief that she had something to do with Jeremy's disappearance. David stepped toward her, wanting to bury his face in her honey-colored hair and hold her until the fear and worry abated.

What the hell was he doing? He stopped abruptly, appalled by the direction of his thoughts. How could he even consider such a thing when he was sure she was involved in Jeremy's disappearance?

Why do people like scary movies?

People like to be scared. If they didn’t, horror movies wouldn’t be so popular. Why would people willingly subject themselves to a frightening experience? After all, experts tell us that when we watch a scary horror movie, our body reactions – increased heartbeat, sweaty palms, decreased skin temperature and a spike in blood pressure – are the same as they would be if we were in a real life scary situation. Professor of communications Glenn Sparks from Purdue University says "We can tell ourselves the images on the screen are not real, but emotionally our brain reacts as if they are.”

So why do so many people love scary horror films if they have such a strong reaction to them?
Psychologists have a few ideas about what makes horror films so alluring.

1. Tension – Viewers love the suspense, mystery, shock and gore of the movies.

2. Sensation seeking – People who like horror films are the same people who like other exciting things like bungee jumping and rollercoasters.

3. A sense of unrealism – We know it’s just a movie so even though it scares us, the fictional nature of horror films affords viewers a sense of control by placing psychological distance between us and the violent acts we have witnessed.

4. A source of catharsis - a way of purging negative emotions and/or as a way to relieve pent-up aggression. Author Stephen King argues that horror acts as a safety valve for cruel impulses. If we can experience such an impulse on-screen, we don’t have to act it out in real life. Unfortunately, researchers say the opposite is closer to the truth; people who consume violent media feel more hostile.

5. A sense of justice –Justice is served when the villain gets his in the end. But what about when innocents end up hacked to pieces?

6. Morbid fascination – It’s the same sort of impulse that has us staring at car accidents; we just can’t look away.

7. Defiance - Sometimes young people watch horror movies just because adults look down on those kinds of movies.

I think a certain segment of the population will enjoy horror movies just as some people like country music and romance novels and other don’t. It’s all a matter of taste.

Do you have any favorite horror or Halloween movies? Don’t ask me to answer this question; I’m way too scared to watch horror movies!

And just to prove it, here's the blurb and excerpt from my paranormal/comedy romance BURNING LOVE, which is not the least bit scary:

After causing three cooking fires in her apartment, Iris Jensen finds herself evicted and homeless. She lands on Riley Benson's doorstep, looking to rent a room in the beautiful old home he's restoring. It's only for six weeks until Iris leaves Portland, Oregon for her new job on a cruise ship. Firefighter Riley knows firsthand what a bad tenant she can be. But he needs money to finish the work on the house he loves. And something about Iris pulls at his heart…

Meanwhile, in Heaven, two angels watch over the young lovers. Angelica and Hildegard work in Heaven's Relationship Division, where angels match mortals with their soul mates. The angels believe so strongly in Iris and Riley’s love that they break Heaven's rules to help them. Can the angels convince them their love will last a lifetime?

Excerpt:

Riley looked into her beautiful blue eyes and her smiling face and did the only thing he was capable of doing at the moment.

He kissed her.

Maybe later, he told himself, when sanity returned, he’d think of a hundred reasons why pulling Iris into his arms, holding her snug against his body, and plundering her soft, sweet mouth was not a good idea. But for now, right now, as she wound her arms around his neck and made tiny sounds of excitement deep in her throat, it felt exactly right.

Heaven. Having Iris in his corner made him believe everything was possible.

He stepped backward toward the stairs, pulling Iris with him, intent on taking her upstairs to his room. He suddenly tripped, nearly losing his balance. He glanced behind him and saw the object he’d stumbled over. A set of luggage sat next to the stairs, still bearing tags from the retailer.

“What the hell is this?”

Iris kissed his neck. “I’m sorry. I should have taken them up to my room.”

Iris had bought new luggage for her trip. Her plans hadn’t changed.

She’s leaving me.

The thought acted as effectively as a bucket of cold water tossed over his head. What was he doing? She was leaving in three weeks and didn’t plan to return. The calendar in the kitchen reminded him of that every day. Why start something that would only lead to heartache?

He’d already lost too many people in his life.

And Riley instinctively knew that if he let himself get close to Iris, let himself love her, a part of him would not survive when she left.
