#Contest - Meredith Bond and the Story Behind the Stories

Meredith Bond wants you to know the story behind the stories of her Merry Men Quartet. And she also wants you to know about her Facebook contest which runs from August 20 -29, with the winners announced on August 29. She's giving away one ebook copy of each of the books in the Merry Men Quartet: An Exotic Heir, A Rake's Reward, A Dandy in Disguise, and The Merry Marquis. Here's the link to the contest: https://www.facebook.com/meredithbondauthor/posts/10157703097629546

Welcome Merry!

The Story Behind the Stories

Where do stories come from? It’s usually a very small spark. Someone says something. You see a book, a movie, a picture. Before you realize it a story is forming in your head—a “what-if”.

It happened to me a while ago when I mentioned my name to someone who was also a writer of Regency romances. I told her my name was Merry. She said, off-handedly, that I should have a character called the Merry Marquis.

I thought it was a great idea!

Being the perverse person that I am, I immediately decided that my Merry Marquis should be a very sad man. Why, though?

Of course, he’s mourning the loss of his wife. But this is a romance, so he has to fall in love once again. With whom?

Well, if my Merry Marquis is called Merry, he had to have been known as a very merry person, therefore his heroine in the book needs the help of someone who is merry and outgoing. Again my irony came to the rescue—he needs a heroine who is shy. For some reason, my mind came up with a girl, Teresa, who is half-English, half-Spanish, who is shy because she’s been plucked from the only home she’s ever known (in Madrid) and sent to a strange country (England).

I’m proud to say that The Merry Marquis has won a few awards since it was first published by Kensington Publishers (under the title Miss Seton’s Sonata).

Characters grow as a writer discovers more and more of their histories, and from the characters, grows the story. But that isn’t all there is to a story. There has to be secondary characters.

My merry hero, if he’s such a popular guy, needs friends. Close friends.

My husband loves comedic characters, someone who is over the top and therefore funny. He created St. John Fotheringay-Phipps, known to all as Fungy.

In British English, St. John is pronounced Sinjin. Fotheringay is pronounced Fungy. So just his name, to an American ear is funny (and odd) and will almost always be mispronounced. (When I first published A Dandy in Disguise, Fungy’s book, a number of people complained that his name sounded like a mushroom. Indeed, it does, and I even have other characters laugh and comment on this in the book. It’s meant to be humorous. Some people didn’t appreciate that, sadly.)

Fungy is a typical Regency dandy, only more so. His fashion is over the top, but so is his kindness. Because of this he absolutely cannot stand idly by while Rose Grace, completely naïve to the ways of society after having been raised on an archaeological site in Greece, is tricked by an unscrupulous gentleman. Fungy is there to save her just when he is needed.

To contrast Fungy’s outrageousness, I created Sin. Sinclair Stratton, Viscount Reath. He is everything Fungy is not. Staid. Conservative. Serious (although he does have a sense of humor—he is friends with Fungy, after all). So naturally, Sin comes across his match (in A Rake’s Reward) when trying to get from Portsmouth to an estate he won at cards when he was just a teenager. The American Sara Whately doesn’t care for lords and doesn’t care a bit about their conceit, and she tells Reath so in no uncertain terms. You know that they just need to be together.

Rounding out the group (and what oddly enough turned into the first book of the series) is Julian Ritchie, Earl of Huntley. Julian was born of my love of Kolkata, India (or Calcutta, as it was known in his time). My husband is from that fascinating city and so I have first hand knowledge of it’s beauty and quirks. Time doesn’t seem to pass in the same way in Kolkata as it does in the rest of the world. People cling to the old ways—fruit and vegetables are still sold by people sitting on the ground, their stock arranged beautifully on banana leaves and in woven baskets before them in the bazaar; traffic lights are still (mostly) pretty colored decorations to be ignored as you drive through the city streets (traffic police are listened to, however, and they still stand at all major intersections making sure traffic flows smoothly); and the houses of even the middle class still team with people cooking, cleaning and even driving for their employers (I shouldn’t mention the sometimes horrid conditions these people return to each night where if you own a tv or a refrigerator you are lucky).

It was easy, then, for me to imagine Calcutta of the 18th century when Julian was born to an Indian mother and an English earl (you can read their story in Under the Mango Tree). I am happy to say that what Julian experienced as an Anglo-Indian isn’t common anymore—the snubs and outright discrimination. But as a proud man and hero of a romance novel, he wasn’t just going to take it, he wanted revenge. What he didn’t plan on was sweet, innocent, open-hearted Cassandra Renwick who had already been hurt once by a man. You’ll find their story in An Exotic Heir.

Thus the Merry Men were born: the story of four men who were close friends, each with his own tale of romance.

Seelie Kay and THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE

Happy Tuesday! Today's guest is Seelie Kay with a contemporary romantic suspense with political intrigue and a bit of kink. Seelie is offering some ebook prizes in her giveaway so make sure to enter the Rafflecopter at the end of this blog. Welcome Seelie!

The President’s Wife
by Seelie Kay

Seelie will be giving away  an ebook of The Garage Dweller to three lucky winners drawn via Rafflecopter. Please use the Rafflecopter below to enter. Remember there is a chance every day to enter to win. You may find all the tour locations here

Interview with Seelie Kay:

Where did you get the idea for THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE:

When I started thinking about this story, the news was filled with allegations about Russian interference with the presidential elections. Since this book was coming out around July 4, America’s Independence Day, I knew I wanted to do something that emphasized the importance of freedom. All of the uproar about the Russians took me back to a different time—the Cold War—when we lived in fear of a nuclear attack by the Soviet Union. So, I began musing about what would happen if the Russians actually did co-opt the government of A free nation. Ultimately, The President’s Wife was born.

Why did you choose this genre?

This book actually combines two genres: Romance and thrillers. It is, in effect, about a political conspiracy uncovered by a very hot and sexy couple who are very much in love, involving another couple being blackmailed because of the love they have for each other.  Those genres just seemed to naturally lend themselves to this story.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book you’d like to share?

My grandparents immigrated to this country in the early 1900s from Czechoslovakia. When I was in my teens, that country was still under Soviet control. However, my grandmother wanted to see her family again. So, my father brought her back for a month-long visit. Throughout their trip, they were closely watched by communist officials and some of their relatives were afraid to receive them in their homes out of fear of retribution. At one point, my father was detained for taking a photo of a church that turned out to be a military installation and would have been jailed if not for a second cousin, who was a higher up in the Communist Party. (They did confiscate the film, however.) And when they got back to the U.S., my grandmother told me she had been afraid every single day. That experience had a significant impact on me. It taught me that we must value freedom, because not everyone has the privilege of being free.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE?

That we should not take freedom for granted. It is our responsibility to respect and protect it, because once it is lost, it may be hard to win back. Even in the U.S., a country that has been free for 242 years, we must be vigilant. Our freedoms are threatened every single day.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I am a pantser, I am afraid. When I am inspired, I just let the story flow. And I don’t stop until I am done. I never know where an idea will take me but I always wind up somewhere!

What’s one thing that your readers would be surprised to learn about you?

That I am an MS Warrior. I was diagnosed in 2002, and although I am somewhat mobility impaired, I continue to write.

Tell us a bit about you. Where do you live, and how long have you been writing?

I am Wisconsin born and bred. Although I have lived in other parts of the country, I returned to WI about 30 years ago and now live outside Milwaukee. I can’t imagine living in a place without the four seasons, no matter how much I complain about the winters and the summers. (I am definitely a spring/fall girl.)  As I said earlier, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. In fact, my mother saved my four-year-old missives in which I complain about what I considered an unfair punishment. My parents were teachers. We had to apologize, in writing.

If writing is your first passion, what is your second?

Food. I am a true foodie. I love to cook and bake or try out new restaurants. In fact, it’s how I relieve stress or work through plot problems when writing. A nice glass of wine is sometimes the perfect end to a busy day.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

I am an attorney and journalist, but these days if I am not writing my own books, I am ghostwriting books for others.

Name two authors we might find you reading when taking a break from your own writing.

J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) and Lisa Scottoline.

What do you like best about your heroine in THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE?

She’s smart and determined, and most importantly, committed to justice.

How can readers reach you or find you online?

Tell us a little about your current work in progress.

It’s a story about four former law school classmates who get shafted by their mates and seek revenge.

What’s your tagline? Why did you choose it?

Sizzling short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink!  That is what I write about…

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

The Garage Dweller. I think it provides a good sense of how I write and what I write about.

Tell us about your current release.

The President’s Wife is a novella about a criminal defense attorney who uncovers a conspiracy to destroy the government of a newly free nation. Here’s the blurb:

When criminal defense attorney Julianna Constant travels to Washington, D.C. to join her former college roommate, Marella de la Aerelli, in celebrating her husband’s election as the first president of the newly democratic Republic of Lodatia, she is met with an unpleasant surprise. Her friend of almost 30 years not only looks unwell, she is cold and distant. After Julianna becomes convinced the woman is really an imposter, she attempts to expose the faux Marella by using a secret only she, Marella, and the sitting U.S. President share. In the process, Julianna helps to uncover an international conspiracy to seize control of the new country, using the president’s wife as a pawn in a dangerous and potentially deadly game. Will Marella be rescued before a coup takes place? Or will she become collateral damage in one tiny nation’s fight to be free?

Thanks for speaking to me, Seelie!

Excerpt:

The state dinner at the White House was in full swing. Waiters were busy delivering food and pouring wine, as guests ate and chatted with others seated at their tables.

Julianna picked at her dinner, some sort of beef dish with quirky vegetables, and continued to study Lodatian President Georges and Mrs. Marella de la Aerelli, as they chatted quietly with the U.S. president and his wife. Marella barely looked up from her plate, and conversation with her hosts appeared to be minimal. God, that is so not the Marella I know. She hasn’t even acknowledged me and I sent her an email informing her that I would be here.

Julianna set her fork down on her plate and nudged her husband, Little River, Wisconsin Police Chief David Manders. “Something’s wrong.” Julianna whispered. “Marella looks wrong. Maybe she’s just tired after the campaign, but she looks sick. Too thin and too pale. And she isn’t smiling. Marella is always smiling, even when she feels like shit. And she hasn’t even looked at me. Why is she ignoring me? Something is not right. I can feel it.”

David looked at his wife and tried to hide his smile. “Jules, you find a conspiracy behind every door these days,” he said quietly. He looked around to ensure that the other four couples seated at their table were otherwise engaged. “I vote for tired, no, make that exhausted. My God, five months ago, she was a farm wife in Lodatia, now she’s been thrust into the international spotlight as the wife of the President. That would exhaust anyone. I know if you ran for president, it would have a negative impact on me.”

Julianna smirked. “If I became President, sir, it would have a negative impact on both of us.”

David sighed and ran a hand through his short, silver hair. His piercing blue eyes gazed at his wife, his fondness apparent. “Well, instead of jumping to conclusions, let’s wait until the reception at the Lodatian Embassy. There are a lot of rules and protocols for visiting dignitaries. Maybe it just isn’t appropriate to buddy up to an old friend at a state dinner. Once you get up close and personal with Marella, you can get a better fix on things. That woman has been through the wringer, what with that opposition group trying to assassinate her husband not once, but twice. I imagine the stress of clinging to Lodatia’s newly formed democratic government is a kind of like hanging on to a cliff, knowing that if you fall, there will be no net to catch you. Cut her some slack and do not tell her she looks awful.”

About Threat of Danger:

Falling in love can be a deadly proposition in this pulse-quickening Mission Recovery novel from the New York Times bestselling author.

Jess Taylor and Derek Daley were in the throes of first love in a small Vermont town when they were kidnapped by a serial killer. They escaped his clutches—but not the trauma of the unsolved crime. With their lives changed forever and their romance cut short, they went their separate ways to exorcise their fears.

Jess is living on the edge as Hollywood’s hottest stuntwoman. It’s no longer terror thrumming through her veins. It’s adrenaline. Derek is a former Navy SEAL spinning his ordeals into heart-pounding bestselling thrillers. But when Jess is called home on a family emergency, she must face the past—and face the man she left behind, who is just as haunted and, like her, still so much in love.

Now, as an old flame reignites, Jess and Derek are taking advantage of second chances and putting their bad memories behind them. But here, in the quiet town of Taylorville, a killer is getting a second chance as well.

Excerpt:

Common sense said to walk away. She’d worked hard to make a life for herself in LA that worked for her.

Screw common sense. He stepped forward and reached around her, looped his fingers around her slim wrists, and tugged her hands from her pockets. Then he took those hands and drew her closer to him.

“Derek . . .”

“I wasn’t sure if you’d ever come back.”

“I’m only back temporarily.”

“Is that how you left things with Eliot?” That she’d be going after him soon? His mouth tightened at the thought.

“He had to go. He had meetings scheduled with directors. And new equipment coming in that he has to test and make decisions on before the next shoot.” When she talked about Eliot, she talked about the business. That gave Derek hope. Sounded like they’d parted as friends and colleagues, not as lovers who couldn’t wait to reunite.

Two and a half weeks left, at the most. He knew her shooting schedule from talking with Zelda. About eighteen days more before Jess had to report to the set. So why in hell was he wasting time?

He dipped his head and brushed his lips over hers. He’d gotten lost once in the Iraqi desert for three days. He hadn’t been as thirsty for water back then as he was now for a taste of Jess.

When she didn’t protest, he pulled her fully into his arms and kissed her.

The point of no return. He needed to find out if things could still work between them. He wanted her, and he could no longer pretend that he didn’t.

Her body was firm, but her lips were soft and silky, as sweet as Zelda’s prizewinning angel food cake. As sweet as the old Jess. Except, this new Jess, she was a woman. She had the power to bring Derek to his knees.

He’d told her that he would give her whatever she needed from him. He hoped she’d figure out that he was what she needed. He was going to have to help her reach that conclusion.

He breathed her in. She smelled like redemption. Like maybe he could have a do-over and get it right this time.

She stood still in the circle of his arms. Undecided. Wary.

Better than a sharp knee in the balls, but Derek wanted more. He nibbled her lips and licked the seam, tasting her.

She tasted like a whole new world opening up. She tasted like the blank page of a book before he’d written the first word, the possibilities limitless.

Was the story of his life written on her heart? Was the story of her life written on his?

Too early to tell. But he wanted to find out. Letter by letter, word by word, sentence by sentence. If only she’d let him.

She did let him in, let him deepen the kiss. Progress, but this was just the opening of her lips, not the opening of her heart. Still, Derek wouldn’t have been a good SEAL if he didn’t grab every advantage, no matter how small. And, really, the kiss could not be called small by any measure.

As he swept into Jess’s mouth, he felt his boundaries expand. Need rushed in, and filled him like water flooding into a torpedoed submarine. He sank onto the seabed of things he always wanted but never believed he could have. Jess’s forgiveness . . . and more.

All these years, he’d thought her forgiveness was all he wanted.

He’d been stupid.

He wanted this. Jess. And he knew in that moment that he was going to do whatever it took to get her and keep her. Eliot couldn’t have her, no matter how handsome he was, or how much they had in common, or how hot women thought it was that the guy was some grandmaster of stunts.

Derek wasn’t going to let Eliot have Jess. He didn’t care if the guy jumped out of a burning helicopter, tied hand and foot, with a ticking bomb in his backpack, and got an Oscar nomination in every single category for the performance.
