#NewRelease from Vicky Burkholder: RAINING JELLY BEANS

Vicky Burkholder has an upcoming release for spring. RAINING JELLY BEANS comes out on April 17, 2023 from The Wild Rose Press, part of the Jelly Beans and Spring Things series. Order your copy now and have it delivered to your ereader on April 17!

Blurb:

Will their future rain Jellybeans and will love win over evil?

Delia loves her life at the lodge but when an email arrives threatening her happiness, she vows to fight to protect her children. Hoping her ex won’t follow through with his threats, she confides her concerns to a local cop and her brother’s best friend Noah.

Noah has loved Delia from afar for a long time. But he knows she’s off limits because she’s Max’s little sister. So, when she asks for his help, he puts his love on the back burner to find her kidnapped twin girls and put her ex-husband behind bars.

Excerpt:

“Noah? What about him? We’re…friends.” Delia thought about her brother Max’s best friend, a tall, handsome local cop who lived about two miles down the mountain toward town. She’d had a crush on him in high school, but he’d been two years ahead of her and barely knew she was alive. She shrugged. “He’s Noah. I’m just Max’s little sister who was always in the way.”

Gigi huffed at her. “You’re impossible. You do realize that he’s been dating you for months now, don’t you?”

“Huh?” Her eyes went wide. “We’ve never been on a date.”

Gigi rolled her eyes and looked at her, one eyebrow raised. “Think about the nights he eats here. Where do you sit?”

Delia frowned and cocked her head, recalling all those nights. “We sit over by the fireplace.”

“Uh huh. And where are the rest of us?”

“You’re right there…” Delia’s eyes widened. “No, you’re not. You’re over near the buffet, with the kids.”

“Yep. And what do you two talk about while you’re eating?”

“We…” Another frown. “We talk about everything. About life, the girls…”

“And that’s not a date? Delia, you’ve been dating that man for months. Tell me you haven’t.”

Author Bio:

As her alter-ego, Vicky has multiple homes all over the universe. She looks human - for the most part - but when she starts writing about characters being able to move things or flicking fire from their fingertips, or changing the course of rivers, people tend to get a little freaked out. She found the one guy out there in the universe who loves her for who she is and they've been together forever and raised four wonderful (now) adults. Her career includes work as a technical writer/editor, a stringer for the local newspaper, and an editor and copy editor for various publishers. At various times in her life, she has been a teacher, a secretary, a short-order cook, a computer specialist, a DJ, and a librarian. When not editing or writing, she can be found in the kitchen creating gluten free goodies for her family.

Coming Soon! My #NewRelease STRONG ENOUGH

Mark your calendars! STRONG ENOUGH releases June 22, 2022! I'm so excited to show off the beautiful cover for STRONG ENOUGH, book four in the Masonville small town romance series. Here it is!

Love can make you stronger, if you let it.

Charlotte Saunders has a full life—a rewarding career as a nurse, meaningful volunteer work at a dog shelter, and family, friends and pets she adores. But no matter how hard she tries, she can’t forget the horrible event that’s haunted her for ten years.

A survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Damon Greyson now helps others who have suffered trauma. His experience and intuition alert him to trouble in Charlotte’s past, and he wants to help her, if only she’d let him.

As they work together to help veterans suffering from PTSD and neglected dogs needing loving homes, their feelings for each other deepen. But when the trauma from Charlotte’s past roars back to life, both are forced to confront their painful histories—or die trying.

Excerpt:

She looked away. “I’m sorry. I hate women who use tears to get what

they want. It’s just that yesterday the shelter had to put down some

dogs. There was this one old dog, Shep….” She shook her head,

 unable to finish.

He squeezed her elbow before letting her go. “I’m sorry, Charlotte.”

She nodded and again Damon sensed her vulnerability. Charlotte

tried to give off an aura of strength. She was the caregiving nurse,

the person others looked to for help. But who helped Charlotte?

After a few breaths, she straightened her shoulders and faced him,

her composure once more back in place. “How long do you think it

will be?”

“You mean until the retreat is up and running?” When she nodded, he

blew out a breath. “I don’t know. My building’s in worse shape than

I first thought.”

“If there’s anything I can do to speed up the process, let me know.”

“You know anything about unplugging sewer lines?”

She made a face. “You’re on your own, Greyson.”

Don’t I know it. “Hey, you asked. From now on I’ll only request your

help when it comes to dogs.”

She chuckled. “Good plan.”

This time Charlotte’s smile was genuine, and for a moment Damon

couldn’t breathe. He found himself wondering what it would be like

to have the full force of her smile directed at him on a regular basis,

and to know there was real affection for him behind the smile. The

longing he experienced at that thought shocked him.

Better not to allow such thoughts to take root. Despite all the work

he’d done over the years to overcome the harm done to him in the

past, he still had questions. Would it ever be possible for him to have

a normal, loving, long-term relationship with a woman? So far, the

longest relationship he’d had lasted only six months.

Maybe he’d always be damaged goods.

It's RAINBOW SPRINKLES Book Birthday!

D.V. Stone is celebrating the 1st birthday of her book RAINBOW SPRINKLES and I'm helping her spread the news! Until July 23, 2021 RAINBOW SPRINKLES will be on sale for .99 cents. That's a great way to mark the occasion!

Blurb:

Retired and widowed Gloriana Jones is forging on with the plans she and her late husband dreamed of—bringing joy and happiness, one ice cream cone at a time, to Lake Unami. But bad weather is drowning her dream. A trip to Upstate NY is bittersweet for Nathan James. He is excited to see his first granddaughter but without his wife he’s lonely. When his car breaks down, he heads to the only light he can see, an ice cream shop. With aid from a heavenly source, electricity sparks, but will the two weather the summer storms and find love a second time? Or will their hopes and dreams melt away?

Excerpt:

“Do you mind if I wait until the tow truck gets here?” He plucked the wet shirt away from his chest with the long fingers of one tanned hand. “It must be electrical, even the radio stopped working.”

“No, you’re welcome to hang around as long as you need.” Gloriana riffled through a cardboard box under the counter, pulled out an extra-large t-shirt, and tossed it to him. “Here you go. The restroom is through there.”

Mr. Gorgeous beamed a perfect toothy smile. “Thanks. I’ll be right back.”

When he disappeared into the hallway and the door clicked shut, Gloriana fanned her face. What the hot fudge was wrong with her?

“Coffee. Make coffee.”

RISE FOR ME, #NewRelease from Kristal Dawn Harris

Kristal Dawn Harris is my guest today with her new vampire romance, RISE FOR ME, which released February 1, 2021. Have a look at this steamy novella!

Blurb:

Vampire and warlock, Roman Lee, spent centuries alone as ringmaster of the carnival. After befriending and healing a scarred, young woman, Roman realizes Mariah is his mate. He waits for her, but when she departs from his life, his torture knows no bounds. Now he's risen, unforgiving and angry, forced from his grave by the one woman who captured his heart, but will another secret and the call of his mate change everything?

The steady call of Roman's blood and the promise of peace brings Mariah Stone home to the carnival and the vampire she left behind. He ignores her until she forces him from the grave with her blood. His anger crushes her already broken spirit, but she is determined to win Roman's forgiveness and free him from their bond. Denied passion leads them down a path of magic and desire, while a devastating secret threatens eternal love.

Excerpt:

Mariah stopped directly over where she knew Roman rested. Her own blood surged in her veins every time she stepped on the worn plank. She tilted her head, listening to the call of his blood and the beat of his heart. Lizzie said he wasn’t feeding as much as he should, so there was one sure way to bring Roman out of his grave. She searched the room for something sharp until her gaze landed on a small, jeweled pocketknife. She grabbed it off the table and pulled the blade out of its slot. It was dull, but it would work.

Mariah placed the small blade against her left palm, then held it over the spot where she knew Roman rested. With one downward swipe, the blade pierced her flesh, opening a one-inch gash. Blood poured from the wound and dripped onto the rough, wooden floor planks. She crouched and held her palm over the crack between the boards, making sure the blood reached Roman. With a deep breath, she gathered her courage as her blood continued to splatter in droplets between the planks. The room seemed to groan, and every trinket vibrated when she finally called to the other half of her soul in a loud, demanding voice. “Rise for me, Roman Lee.”

Dee Gatrell's SWEET SUNSET

Dee Gatrell visits today with a fun interview that offers a peek into her life and her writing process. Her newest release, SWEET SUNSET, is a later-in-life romance between a psychologist and a woman with too much going on in her life. Please welcome Dee Gatrell!

Why did you choose this genre?

I like to read many genres, but I noticed over the years that I do not do well with he said/she said books. I always have more people in my stories. Probably because I have always been surrounded by aunt, uncles, cousins, and now my four children and 12 grandchildren.

Did you always want to be a writer?

Yes. As a child I wrote a lot of things, like fan letters to my favorite cowboys, letters to pen pals, family and friends. I loved getting mail. No email back then. In high school I wrote skits for the pep rallies. And in my senior year my English teacher loved the story I wrote with my weird sense of humor.

Was there anything unusual, any anecdote about this book you’d like to share?

Many, but I have to say one of my favorite scenes was when the three women took the mothers and Myrtle Sue’s Mother-in-law to lunch, it was fun to write. June was the mother of friends who we went to lunch with once. She was a Southern lady who said to me: My neighbor Wanda had me come to her jewelry party, all that cheap stuff. Why you know, those Yankees don’t stay up North. And I knew I wanted to use June in a book, even as a minor character. She passed away at 93 a few years ago. Also used something from my friend’s mother.  One of my daughter’s was in an abusive marriage. I had to change a lot of things, but did get to kill him off.

What do you want readers to come away with after they read SWEET SUNSET?

I want them to read about characters they like, I want them to be able to laugh, and I hope they enjoy the recipes I put into the book.

Do you have any words of advice to beginning writers?

Yes, never give up. Join writing groups, send your writing to friends who will love it even if it isn’t the best at the time. I wrote for newspapers and magazines for years, but was never able to sell a novel until I retired from working. But hey, I’m older than dirt, but finally did it!

How do you think your life experiences have prepared you for writing?

I have lived a long time, come from a large family with all sorts of personalities, lived in several states, Ohio, Indiana, Oklahoma and Florida. I learned something new each place I have lived. If you watch and listen to people, you can pick up ideas for your characters. Is she clumsy? (I am). Does he have flirty eyes? Is she shy? Does she have hobbies? Does she belly dance? Do they like to garden? Does she have a crazy aunt she adores? Stop and look around.  You can pick up many ideas.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

Yes, at the present time we have three dogs. Zeus is almost 13 years old, Icarus is 12 and Ellie, our rescue dog is 5 years old. Dogs give you unconditional love. It’s hard when they get old. You know they won’t be with you forever. They get sick just like we do and we need to be there for them. We had a cat once. He was adorable. One night when my husband was working (military) the cat kept jumping on me. Something it never did before. Seems he was warning me that the gas stove was putting out fumes. Thankfully, hubby came home from work and threw his cigarette down before walking into the house. We had two kids that had a bedroom near the kitchen. Hubby smelled it and went in and fixed the odor. Then a week later, a neighbor’s dog caught our cat and killed it.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

I’m retired from the college where I worked for many years as an educational advisor. Yes, I did get ideas listening to students. I also wrote for the confession magazines and various newspapers while working there.

What do you like best about your hero from SWEET SUNSET?

Zack is compassionate. In spite of Myrtle Sue’s crazy family, he loves all of them. He’s a psychologist, and as Myrtle Sue says, he could practice on all of them. (I could use him with my family too!)

What do you like best about your heroine from SWEET SUNSET?

Myrtle Sue has a lot to put up with, a dead husband who talks to her in her sleep, an unmarried pregnant daughter, another daughter who is in an abusive marriage, a son who doesn’t want to grow up and a mother-in-law with dementia who moved in with her. But in spite of it all, she loves them and helps however she can. She also learns to quit being an enabler.

I love the name Myrtle Sue. How do you choose the names and physical characteristics of your characters? Do you base them on real people?

Long ago, in the early stages of AOL, a bunch of published and unpublished writers started a crazy fictional place to live we called Happy Acres. My name there was Myrtle Sue. My friend, Martha Hicks, (AKA Gladys Luween), was my next-door neighbor. We are still friends and call one another by those names. As for the others in Sweet Sunset, my editor made me change a lot of names. She said I had too many that started with M and other letters. I was running out of names to call Zack, and finally said Zack, no other names with Z. Then I realized the dog’s name was Zeus. I figured folks would figure out the difference between the two. I say I didn’t use anyone I know, but my husband says I know who that really is. So perhaps I did have a few people I know, strictly accidental, right?

How can readers reach you or find you online?

I’m on Face Book. I have an author page https://www.facebook.com/Dee-Gatrell-Author-1835656376706280/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/deegat41
Email: gatrelldee@gmail.com

We all need to laugh at times. I hope I always give readers a chuckle.

You made me chuckle with this interview, Dee! Thanks for being here.

Blurb for SWEET SUNSET:

Myrtle Sue Henderson, widowed, didn’t count on her mother-in-law moving in with her when her husband passed over. But Myrtle Sue’s loopy in-law troubles aren’t her only family baggage—she’s ailed with three adult children who use her like she’s a pair of Depends. With a daughter and two grandchildren attempting to escape an abusive husband, a second unmarried daughter who is pregnant with twins, and a son who refuses to grow up, she’s at her wits end.

Myrtle Sue didn’t figure she’d ever meet another man she’d care for, until she went to church to get away from her troubles, only to find more when her mother-in-law causes chaos and hits an elderly man with her cane and helps herself to money out of the collection plate. That’s how she meets Zack. She figures once he meets her dysfunctional family, he’ll run as fast as he can—away from them.

Excerpt:

Sonja’s eyes widened, and she grinned.

I thanked God Adam was blind to Hazel’s faults. “Thank you, Adam. You have no idea how happy I am that you’ll be here for Hazel.” And I really meant what I said.

Hazel walked into the kitchen and glanced around. “Who’s here? Oh my goodness! It’s my son Harold. How are you, honey?” She bent over and kissed Adam’s cheek. “And why don’t you ever visit your mommy, you naughty boy?”

I rolled my eyes and waved toward Adam. “Hazel, Harold’s been dead for twenty years. This is Adam, Sonja’s friend from the hospital. Remember? He’s a nurse, and he stays with you while I work.” I should’ve added whatever we paid him was worth every penny. He really was good to her.

“Oh, yes, Adam, dear.” She frowned at me. “Why can’t you be kind like Adam, Myrtle Sue? You’ve always been so mean to me.”

Sonja grinned. “Hi, Nana. How are you?”

“I’m fine.” She took a seat and grabbed a muffin. “Who are you? Are you Violet’s daughter?”

Sonja narrowed her eyes at her grandmother. “Nana! I’m Sonja, your granddaughter. Myrtle Sue and Don’s daughter.”

“Of course.” She laughed and pointed at her head. “You know how it is when you get old. Someday your mother will be just like me.”

Shuddering, I mumbled, “God forbid.”

“I hope you made roast beef for Father,” Hazel said.

“Yes, of course, and I made garlic rolls,” I lied, and then whispered, “Sonja, want some garlic tied around your neck?”

“Mom!”

Hazel pointed at the stove. “Good. And remember, he likes carrots and noodles around his roast beef.”

Adam stood and smiled. “Well, I’ve got to go now. I’ll see you on Monday, Nana.”

“Okay, honey.” She reached into her pocket. “Here’s a dollar. Get yourself something to eat. You’re rather skinny, you know.”

“Thanks,” he said, kissing her cheek.

I walked him to the door.

He handed me the money. “I’ve tried giving her the money back, but she gets mad. You take it.”

I brushed away his hand. “No, Adam. You keep the money. Whatever you get, you deserve. You’re very good with Hazel. Good luck with your new friend.”

Five minutes after Adam left, my son, Terry, arrived.

Terry kissed my cheek. “What’s to eat, Ma?”

I hugged him. “Muffins.” Terry wasn’t pretty like Adam. Instead, he had a rugged look, more like a cowboy. He had those fabulous blue eyes but not the long lashes. His nose showed signs of his youthful fist fights, and his dimples added to his charm. I can’t tell you how many girls called the house for him in his teen years. And yet at the age of twenty-three, he still hadn’t found a special woman.

He grabbed a chair and sat. “Muffins? Don’t you have any real food?”

Author Bio:

Dee Gatrell grew up in OH. She and her cousins entertained themselves by making up stories, dressing up in costumes and charging the neighborhood kids a few cents to come watch their plays. Her writing changed over the years. After marrying her husband Larry, they moved around the country, first when he was in the Air Force, next his civilian jobs required moving, too.

They have four children. Being away from family and listening to the kids running rampant, she would write letters to her relatives. She had a lot of aunts, uncles, cousins and various friends. This is her way to relieve stress. They found her amusing. She wasn’t trying to be funny, she was trying to stay sane.

The first time they relocated to Florida, her husband suggested she might want to go to college. Was he kidding? All she knew about was diapers, children, cleaning, laundry and cooking. She picked up the phone and called the local community college. The person on the phone encouraged her to take a writing class. From there she just kept attending until she finally, ten years later, received her BA from the University of Florida. She wrote for various newspapers over the years, and also worked as an educational advisor for Seminole State College before retiring.

Dee’s first novel, Sweet Sunset, was released in December 2016. She refers to the book as her dysfunctional family novel. She is now working on two more novels, one is an inspirational romance, the other another woman’s fiction.

Dee lives in Florida with her husband, Larry, four grown children, and a slew of grandkids. You can contact her on FaceBook or email her at gatrelldee@gmail.com.

#AuthorInterview with Claire Marti

Claire Marti's debut romance novel is releasing on March 31, 2017 with The Wild Rose Press. This romance writer who teaches yoga (she used to be a yoga teacher who wrote romance) is an interesting person and a talented writer. Please welcome Claire Marti!

What do you want readers to come away with after they read Second Chance in Laguna?

It’s a story about finding the courage to start over after suffering a broken heart. Choosing to release the past, live in the present, and follow your dreams is a recipe for happiness. I want readers to be inspired to find the courage to change their lives if they aren’t fulfilled. To understand it’s never too late to seek happiness.

When were you first published and how did that happen? Was it a long or short journey?

I’ve written numerous non-fiction articles in the yoga and wellness industry. Second Chance in Laguna is my debut novel. I started in late 2014 and began pitching in 2015. I won a few contests and that helped me sign a book deal in March 2016 with The Wild Rose Press.

How did you get started writing romance?

As a child, I found my mom’s stash of Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers novels. Reading those sealed my fate!

What comes first for you – plot or character? And why?

Character all the way. I love creating the characters because the entire story springs from their inner conflicts. Learning to love and accept themselves frees them up to love and accept others.

How many books do you have under the proverbial bed? Will they ever see the light of day?

None! Second Chance in Laguna is my first novel. I do have characters, outlines, and some scenes written for a women’s fiction novel set in 1920’s Paris and Antibes. I’m working up the courage to dive into it.

What’s one thing that your readers would be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve got the musical taste of a teenage boy from the 1990’s. Alternative rock, heavy metal—front row for Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Muse, Guns n’ Roses (back in the day.)

Tell us a bit about you. Where do you live, and how long have you been writing?

I live in Encinitas, California, a sleepy beach town about twenty-five miles north of San Diego. I’ve been writing stories since I was a child. I majored in English at the University of Virginia, practiced law briefly, and transitioned into teaching yoga and writing full-time over the last few years.

Do you have another occupation, other than writer? If so, what is it? Does it help you with your writing?

I’ve been teaching yoga since 2006. I teach in studios, online, and in clients’ homes. Keeping my mind, body, and spirit healthy complements my writing. I like to say I was a yoga teacher who wrote and now I’m a writer who also teaches yoga.

How do you think your life experiences have prepared you for writing?

I’ve got a crazy family and made many dramatic, ahem, romantic choices in my 20’s and early 30’s. Growing up the youngest of six children, having a French father and dual citizenship, working as a lawyer, a non-profit animal rescue director, and a yoga teacher gives me a broad perspective on life.

Do you have any pets? Are you cat person or a dog person? Or are you into totally different pets, like goldfish? What do you like best about your pet?

I’ve got Josie and the pussycats. Josie is a rescue dog—part mastiff and part lab. She’s our gentle giant. Beau is a big sweet black kitty and Lola is our rambunctious tiger cat. My dream is to open my own animal sanctuary and save them all!

How can readers reach you or find you online?

My website is www.clairemarti.com. Twitter: @clairepmart

Tell us a little about your current work in progress.

I’m working with my editor on revisions to Book Two in the Finding Forever in Laguna series: Brandt and Alyssa’s story. I’m also working on Book Three: Christian and Kelly’s story.

Tell us about your current release.

Here’s what Second Chance in Laguna, releasing March 31, 2017 is about:

When Sophie Barnes’s fiancé jilts her at the altar, her carefully planned life implodes. Considering his betrayal to be a rude wake-up call, she leaves everything she knows in San Diego and flees to Laguna Beach. She vows to transform her life by avoiding men for a year and by fulfilling her dream of writing a wildly successful novel.

Sophie’s new landlord, Nicholas Morgan, is a gorgeous, successful architect with a player reputation. Nick’s avoided the intimacy of a long-term relationship—until Sophie’s independence, courage, and beauty touch his guarded heart. Both Sophie and Nick are terrified of being hurt again, but can they resist the pull of true love?

Excerpt:

Nick arrived right on time, looking gorgeous in faded jeans and a plain white T-shirt. How did he always manage to start the butterflies fluttering in her stomach? Just by standing there with the setting sun framing him. She was in trouble.

“Hi, beautiful. Ready to go?” He clasped her face in his hands and planted a soft kiss on her lips.

Returning his kiss, Sophie wound her arms around his neck and deepened it. She couldn’t resist. His strong arms wrapped around her waist, hugging her close to his broad chest.

“Mmm, feel free to greet me like that every time I come over.” His lips curved up into a sweet smile.

Heat washed her cheeks, and she returned his smile. “Let’s go. Prepare to be blown away by the movie snack of the century.”

Determined to keep things light and enjoy the movie before “the talk,” Sophie thrust down the lick of panic bubbling in her gut. She’d accomplished next to nothing all afternoon, instead wrestling with whether she needed to tell him about Doug.

The angel on her shoulder whispered to tell him because if they were going to have any kind of relationship, even a friends-with-benefits one, honesty and trust were vital.

The devil urged her to zip it. They’d only known each other a few weeks. What if he lived up to his Player of Laguna reputation and expected only a fun fling? Even though he seemed deeper than that. What if she scared him off with a premature talk?

“Is that a blush? The popcorn à la Sophie is that decadent?” he joked.

“Ha-ha! Just a little warm, that’s all. No blushing here.” Damn fair skin betrays me every time.

After they settled into their reclining seats at the luxury theater, Sophie poured peanut M&Ms into a tub of popcorn large enough to feed a family of four. Nick sampled it, bowing to her genius. They scarfed down most of the tub before the closing credits.

He kept her hand clasped in his, and she lost herself in the dark humor of the film he’d chosen. It seemed normal. Like they were a happy boyfriend and girlfriend without a care in the world.

Afterward, they headed back to her cottage. When Nick parked and walked her to the door, he glanced at her with a raised brow. She appreciated he didn’t just assume he was coming over and getting lucky, although she wished it was so simple.

“Come in. There’s something I need to talk about with you.” Sophie entered the house, working to swallow her jangled nerves. Immediately, Zack appeared at her feet, rubbing against her and purring like a motorboat. His moral support aided her resolve. Oh, she was dreading this.

Without answering, Nick reached for her. Pulling her close, he kissed her and lifted his head with a smile. “That sounds serious. Everything okay?”

She ducked out of his arms and headed to the couch. Perching on the edge of the cushion, she motioned for him to join her. On the far end of the couch. His touch scrambled her brain and stymied her best intentions.

Sharing Some Leftovers

Today I'm at Contemporary Romance Cafe today talking about scenes that didn't make the final cut. I thought I'd share an epilogue I'd written for FIRST AND AGAIN that never made the published version. I wanted to show how happy Bridget and Jack were as they prepared for their wedding. My editor suggested I'd already wrapped up my characters' story and the epilogue was unnecessary. Of course she was right, so the epilogue hit the cutting room floor.

But I'm not a person who likes to let anything go to waste, so I'm sharing the epilogue here today. Enjoy!

Bridget set down the receiver of the phone and smiled at her sister.

“That was Mike. He and Megan just picked up Leslie at the school in Bismarck and they’re on their way home.”

“Okay, so we’ve got about an hour to get everything ready,” Celia said, looking around the restaurant. They’d gone a little overboard with the pink and purple streamers, Leslie’s two favorite colors. “We should be fine. I’ll finish icing the cake. Tell Jack and Gavin it’s time to fire up the barbecues. We’ve got practically the whole town coming.” She grinned at Bridget. “This is a little different from most of the events you cater.”

“It’s the best one so far,” she said with a smile. She glanced at the huge banner Megan and Shawna and Rebecca had made declaring, “Happy 11th Birthday Leslie!” in bright neon pink and purple. “I think she’d going to be so surprised.”

“In more ways than one,” Celia laughed. “Go check on the guys.”

Tina stopped her before she could make it out the door. She held out a plate of cookies.  “What do you think?”

Bridget laughed when she saw that she’d created happy faces on each of Leslie’s favorite oatmeal cookies with pink and purple M and M’s. “I’m sure they’ll be a big hit.” She pulled her into an embrace. “Thank you for everything.”

Tina hugged her back. “Hey, it’s not every day a girl turns eleven. I hate to bring up business at a time like this but we need to talk to the Smiths by Thursday and nail down the menu for their anniversary party.”

“You might have to talk to them because I’ve got to get my supplies on Thursday for the wedding on Friday night.”

“Okay, I can do that. Remind me to mark it in the calendar of my new Iphone.”

She grinned. “Have you figured out how to use it yet?”

“It’s coming. You’ve got to get with the new technology, Bridge.”

“I’m doing fine with my pencil and my calendar, thank you very much.”

“Suit yourself.” Tina smiled and threw her free arm around Bridget. “Congratulations, sweetie. I know you’re going to be very happy.”

“I already am,” she replied.

It was true. Between the growing catering business and the restaurant that she and Tina had just reopened, she was working harder than ever before. But somehow it didn’t seem like work. It felt like she was having a good time with her best friend doing what she loved.

If someone had told her a year ago that Tina Wilson would become her best friend, she would have asked what he was smoking.

“Mom!” Rebecca stood in the doorway to the restaurant looking frantic. “Can you come here a minute?”

“What’s wrong?”

She held out a silver necklace. “My fingers are all thumbs. I can’t do up the clasp.”

“Here, let me get that for you.” Bridget took the necklace from her daughter’s hand.  “Turn around and lift your hair.”

Rebecca obediently made an about face. “I’m so nervous!  I’ve never been a bridesmaid before. How come you’re so calm? I thought brides turned into Bridezillas before the ceremony.”

She laughed. “I guess I’m calm because I know I’m marrying the right man. I know Jack and I are going to be very happy.”

“I think so too, Mom.”

She squeezed her shoulders. “There. Your necklace is secured and you’re all set.”

Rebecca turned to face her once more, smoothing the skirt of her dress as she did so. She wore a simple sundress with spaghetti straps in a bright yellow that set off the flames in her auburn hair.
“How do I look?”

She smiled and touched her face. It was hard to believe her baby was sixteen years old. “You look all grown up, and completely, and utterly stunning.”

She hugged her. “Thanks Mom. I love you.”

“I love you too, baby.”

Mavis came in through the back door to the restaurant carrying two large vases filled with flowers.

“Aren’t these nice?” Mavis said. “They’re from Jane’s garden. Where would you like me to put them?”

Bridget glanced at the two long banquet tables they’d set up for their guests. “Maybe on either end of the head table.”

“Jane’s bringing two more bouquets when she comes.”

“Even better. We can have one on every table. Rebecca, can you help Grandma and Jane seat people as they arrive?”

“Sure.”

“Here Rebecca,” Mavis said, handing her one of the vases. “Put this on the table for me, will you.”

“Okay Grandma.” She walked toward the banquet tables with her arrangement of gladiolas and lilies.
Mavis kissed Bridget’s cheek. “Be happy, honey.”

“I am, Mom. I will be.”

“I see George and Don are here already.”

She waved at the two older gents as they made their way into the room. Don wheeled Martha in her chair. “I promised them apple pie if they got here early. Can you cut them each a piece?”

Mavis laughed and shook her head. “Those two are incorrigible. I’ll take care of them.”

She made her way outside. The coolness of the air conditioned restaurant was a sharp contrast to the hot July afternoon. Jack and Gavin had borrowed a couple of gas barbecues in order to cook up enough hot dogs and hamburgers for the hungry crowd that was on its way.

“Mike phoned. They just picked up Leslie. If we cook the burgers now we can put them in the warming tray till it’s time to eat. I don’t want you two slaving away out here and missing the all the fun.”

“I’ll go grab the burgers and dogs from the freezer,” Gavin said. “You start up the grills.”

Jack gave him a salute. “Aye, aye Captain.”

After the grills began to heat he turned to Bridget. “Is everything under control? Do you need me to do anything else?”

“No, we’re fine,” She said with a smile. She placed her arms around his waist. “I wouldn’t want to wear out one of the guests of honor. At least not yet.”

He kissed her with a passion that hinted at delights to come. “Good idea. We’ll need a little stamina for our wedding night.”

“Our wedding night.” She laughed. “Can you believe it?”

He kissed her nose. “Believe it, sweetheart.”

“I hope the justice of the peace keeps the ceremony short and sweet.”

“That’s the best kind.”

“Are you nervous?”

“Not a bit.”

“Me neither,” she said. “I’m looking forward to having fun with all our friends and family.”

“You’re sure you didn’t want a fancier wedding? Maybe something on a Caribbean island or a cruise ship? We can still do something like that later if you want.”

She shook her head. “Nope. I’m getting married exactly where I want and how I want, on my step-daughter’s eleventh birthday. And most importantly, I’m marrying the man I want. I couldn’t be happier, Jack.”

It was true. She was surrounded by the people she loved in the town she’d come to love. She felt like the luckiest woman in the world.

She knew without a doubt she belonged in Paradise.

Thanks for reading my "leftovers"! Here's the blurb for FIRST AND AGAIN:

Excerpt:

The boxes of candy hearts Julie forgot spilled across the floor.

Cole hunkered down and gathered the papers. His mouth formed a hard line as he glanced at Sabrina’s leave paperwork with the end date prominently circled. He replaced it on the table under the keys.

“No really, I can do it. You stay, Cole. I’ll be right back.” Sabrina caught her reflection in the mirror on the wall. The quest for a coat resulted in her hair looking as if she’d stuck her finger into an electrical outlet. Her appearance matched her desperation. She ran her hands over her head, but the static filled strands resisted smoothing.

“I need to check on Dad anyway, and it’s on my way. I’ll take Josie.” Cole extended his elbow, and Josie latched on like a lifeline, her fingers digging into the leather of his jacket. She skittered across a few of the remaining candies, crushing Be Mine and Love Me on the floor. “Thanks again for dinner, Marge.”

“Cole wait.” Despair leaked into Sabrina’s plea.

He glanced toward the papers on the table and sighed. “I waited for years, Rena. It’s you who waited too long.”

As the door closed behind him, so did the future with Cole that she’d imagined. Her shoulders fell. She knelt to collect the candy hearts scattered on the floor. Forget Me Not and Hug Me taunted her with their cheerful words. Lacking a garbage bag, she shoved a handful of the candies into her jacket pocket. Several hearts were trodden into tiny pieces, like her own.
