Amber Daulton and her Furry Friends

Amber Daulton is visiting on this Valentine's Day with a message about showing some love to our furry friends by having them spayed or neutered. As she says, it is absolutely the most loving thing you can do for your pet. Amber also shares a look into her Valentine romance "My Valentine Adventure". Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this 2 Flame novella. It's free until February 17!

Spaying and Neutering Your Pet – They’ll Thank You For It

I absolutely adore cats. Currently, I am a mother to three furry ninjas who think THEY own the house, and I just live there. Each of my kitties possess their own personality and they make my life crazy sometimes, but I’m not here to talk about how wonderfully sweet they are (cough cough—mean little devils). Instead, let’s talk about the best thing a pet owner can do for their pets: spaying and neutering them.

There are several benefits of spaying. Female dogs and cats no longer roam in search of a mate as often as they once did. Even though most people believe spaying eliminates an animal’s heat cycle, every spayed female dog or cat I’ve cared for still went into heat, but not as often and with less bad behavior. Spaying also reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors and eliminates uterine and ovarian cancer, especially if done before the first heat cycle, which usually begins at the age of five or six months. The animals are also less prone to urinary tract infections.

The benefits of neutering male dogs and cats are just as important. Neutered males are less aggressive and don’t spray as often, if at all, to mark their territory. Since they don’t feel the desire to roam, they’re less likely to be injured in fights or car accidents. The risk of testicular cancer is eliminated and the risk of prostate disease is decreased.

Spaying and neutering obviously reduces the number of unwanted puppies and kittens, which saves thousands from ending up in kill shelters or from living a rough life as a stray.

My kitties—Darby (boy), Pepper (girl), and Sox (boy)—have been fixed. Darby and Pepper are the same age—7 years old, give or take a few months—and grew up together. Sox is the newest member of the family. He was a stray that showed up one day and refused to leave. My hubby and I estimate his age at about 2-3 years. Before Sox was neutered, he was always fighting and jumping on the other cats. They hated him. Now that he’s been fixed, the tension in the house has drastically dropped. Granted, the three cats aren’t best buddies and they still growl at one another, but they’re co-existing and getting used to each other. Before long, I hope we’ll all be one big happy family.

In my contemporary romance novella, My Valentine Adventure, the heroine Claire is a supporter of animal rights and has several animals in her home. Whether she’s adopting a pet from a kill shelter or supporting a wild animal’s right to live free, she’s given her heart to the furry creatures among us.

Thank you so much for reading. I’d love to hear about your pets, so please comment at the end of this post.

Blurb, My Valentine Adventure:

Parker Townsend is raising his children alone after he lost his wife, but then his ordered world is turned upside down when his two little hellions place a “Mom Wanted” ad in the local paper. To his chagrin, he’s roped into a blind date.

Claire Lauer answers the want ad with few expectations and meets Parker on Valentine’s Day, a day she hates with a passion. As an animal rights activist and a divorcĂ©e, she’s more comfortable with a placard in her hand than in the company of a handsome man with emotional baggage.

After a protest takes a turn for the worse, she seeks shelter in her date’s arms. Will Parker and Claire find the courage to lay their fragile hearts on the line, or will they lose their second chance at happiness?

Excerpt:

Parker didn’t care about Glenn’s speech, not when he needed to find Claire and make sure she was safe. Police sirens wailed in the distance—someone probably called them before the tiger prowled free, which explained how they arrived so soon—and he finally spotted his wayward date.

Claire climbed up on the cab of Glenn’s truck as though for a better vantage point. She swept her gaze over the protesters and then waved her arms in the air as she met Parker’s gaze.

He forced his way to her. Relief flooded his veins like a drug as he reached her side. Lifting his arms, he grasped her waist and helped her down.

“Stuff like this doesn’t happen often, Parker. It’s just a crazy night.” She braced her hands on his shoulders as she slid down the length of his body. People shoved past them, fleeing both the incoming police and the freed tiger out for blood.

Parker tightened his arms around her, holding her close, not giving her the chance to fly the coop. Claire gripped the lapels of his jacket as a strange gleam lit her eyes like blue fire. She kissed him as though her life depended on it. Stars danced in his eyes from the fevered onslaught of her lips. Her body pressed against his, but he couldn’t savor the moment.

Red and blue lights flashed down the street and headed right toward them.
